Are many people with the energia dual fuel(33% discount) looking to change? It seems like a 6% increase in prices but to pay the break fee of €100 (€50 for gas and €50 for electricity) doesnt seem worthwile to me unless you have a large energy demand…

they will recoup the €75 if you leave but if you never got it, there is nothing to recoup (obviously). The bonus would be applied to your second bill, they don't send you anything (maybe I'm misreading your post)

was with SSE but offfered crap renewal rates so switching to Electric Ireland - EI site states €100 welcome bonus when starting the switch but once i got into it it changed to €85 welcome credit… Will query that. Also filled out all the details and can see how people may be tricked to turn on smart especially older people. Went through filled in everything and got email , then got another email saying i needed to fill in mprn to finish the switch. i clicked and re-filled all the details again. not sure why it asked for more as i had filled it all in already. Anyways see how the switch process goes.

I'm just off the phone to them, the only penalty to apply would be the €50 termination fee.

I signed up end of June, they said they will not recoup the €75 cashback.

I renewed with Energia last week, Electric only, locked in a 30% discount if I agreed to a 24-month contract. Was a decent enough deal prior to the raised prices. Withdrew from the contract during the 14-day cooling off period and have gone to EI on the 30% discount 24-Hour Saver plan. Account already has the €100 credit applied. We have a decent-sized solar system so sell a lot of units back to the grid, the higher feed-in-tariff rate at EI is just as important to us as the lower consumption unit rate.

I spoke to customer service at Energia prior to switching (wasn't sure if I needed to say anything to them), she was 100% understanding of the decision to move and basically said - without being 100% direct as I guess they are being recorded - that she'd have done the same in our shoes! Left a note on our account to make sure we don't get charged with the break fee, in case it would be applied mistakenly or the process takes long enough that the 14-day cooling off period is up.

    Ding Ding Ding!

    BordGais +13.5% sc +12%, Pinergy +10% https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2025/0912/1533126-bord-gais-energy-price-hike/

Hang on, all the advice on this thread is to wait until your current contract has expired before changing. The 14-day cooling off period applies after you have switched and your new contract has started. It can not be used to bide you any time before your current contract expires.

Interesting that their smart 24hr is cheaper than their regular 24hr rate. First time I've seen an actual benefit to smart rates from suppliers

I started a new contract last week, after calling to check their best offer to keep me.

agreed… very interesting. Not sure of the logic here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,268 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

When smart meter plans first became a thing the average smart plan night rate was 50% higher than a nightsaver plan night rate, day rates and obviously peak rates were also higher.

I didn't see the logic there either, maybe there is just no logic to it

Balls, just switched from Energia (due to end of contract) to BG on 7th Sept. Before increase would be about 10 Eur better off with BG for my usage (compared to EI). Now with increase it'll be worse off by 170.

Would I be right to say that if I cancel the switch during the cooling off period, it would revert back to Energia and I have to wait 30 days before I can switch again? Or can I switch to EI straight away?

EI are going to have a massive increase in new customers signing up over the next few weeks I reckon, they have only committed to not increasing their prices for the winter, there's nothing to say come feb or march next year they won't announce price increases then.

I haven't done the sums yet but in light of the above planned increase I'm wondering if I should go back to EI?

I was with EI for electricity only but switched to BGE 6 days ago. Just today I got my final bill from EI but does anyone know if I would be able to avail of new customer discounts with them again?

Simon Harris has been very vocal over the last few weeks on their being no state energy supports for households in the upcoming budget. It wasn't a good look when energy companies started announcing big increases.

The state owned energy company then announces a cut in gas prices and no increase in electricity (which is very welcome by the way). I certainly smell a bit of connection here to take pressure off Harris. I doubt you'll find any official contact but i find it a bit of a coincidence🙂

You would not be a new customer. You can ask them for a loyalty discount

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,227 ✭✭✭ablelocks

maybe i'm just an auld cynic, but it could be an effort to get us all to activate our smart meters

once we've done that, we can't go back and they can start raising the prices or increasing the peak hours or reducing the off peak times or eliminating the ev windows or all of the above.

Yes you are quite correct I'll be doing the same.👍

    Yeah,was thinking that myself!🤔

There is no rational reason to suppose that smart meters will have average tariffs higher than a standard meter, but there is a chance of having smart meter tariffs lower on average.

On an aside, this time of year is a good time to have your contract expire. It is now reasonably clear what the shape of things are for the winter whereas someone taking on a Bord Gais contract a month ago might now have a different take the merits of Electric Ireland.

Quick question I signed up in April for Dual Fuel gas and electricity.

I am assuming I can change both accounts with dual fuel with the change without any charges can I?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,176 ✭✭✭✭muffler

I got an email from BGE about the increase and one very important point I picked up on was that I can cancel anytime without penalty in the next 30 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,268 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Well they are all private companies driven by profit and regulated by a toothless entity so your cynicism might be somewhat justified

Switch the account holder to your other half, you will get new customer rates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,840 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

Pinergy confirmed that its price change will result in a 9.83% increase to typical household costs from 13 October, equivalent to €199 annually based on a domestic customer using typical consumption.

Ive just switched to EI there now from my Energia plan, rates are very similar now, but come Oct, Energia will be much higher even when I take the €50 exit fee in to account. As someone just pointed out, now isn't actually a bad time to start a new contract, at least this time next year we might know who is and isn't increasing prices again.

Not sure this is the case as its going to be the same MPRN number

I'm with electric ireland on the 24hr rate. I used to be on their day night plan. Losing my 28 percent discount and best they will offer is 18 percent.

Flogas 24hr is 23.44c standing charge rural 313.90

Electric ireland are offering me 27.93 with standing charge of 314

I'm getting an ev but the other two rates for Flogas is making a difference of 4 euro a week. I am better off with the 24hr with 8 on family and peak rate when the kids get in from school at that time and dinners.

Anyone recommend Flogas. Are they due an increase. I see electric irelanf haven't increased and not sure if they will now?

Farm is with bord gais. Only moved to them in August. Thinking of moving away from them now with the hike so interested in Flogas
