Seeing as we're in preseason it's time to open a thread for the new season.

The season kicks off with Leinster away to Stormers on Friday 26th September and will run until the Grand Final on Saturday 20th June 2026.

    Fixtures are available here https://stats.unitedrugby.com/match-centre/2025-26/1

Big changes for the Stormers, might be just what they need to get to the top of URC again. Judging by the first 3 rounds of Currie Cup rugby the past few weekends, things are going well.

meanwhile Ospreys, who are planning to move to St Helen’s in 2026-27 (if they still exist, that is!) will play this season in the Brewery Field in Bridgend having vacated the Swansea.com Stadium.

WRU have launched their future vision for the urc teams according to the BBC.

Option of 2 well funded teams... Or two versions of 3 teams.....

I'd love to see the maps of the new 'regions' they have in their heads…

It would have to be "east" and "west" really.

Ospreys and Scarlets to merge to form a "West Wales" and dragons and Cardiff to form "East Wales"

As to what they can be called to placate the fans I've no idea. Llanelli fans won't get behind a team called Swansea and Neath fans won't get behind a team called Cardiff.

SA are shareholders in the URC now, hopefully that locks them in for the foreseeable

I can't see them or anyone wanting else wanting them to leave. Their addition to the league has been a big success.

That's a good move, lock them in and help grow the competition

So are the 4 Welsh teams actually going to play this season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭PMC83

It's one or two more seasons from what I read, but knowing the teams are folding /merging /rebranding surely won't make for good support. Hopefully teams will rally under this and try finish strong, but it feels like there will be some cloud for a while

"Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully"

    (attributed to Samuel Johnson)

If a Club & it's supporters cannot fight as hard as possible to ensure survival in these circumstances then maybe it's best that the Club does not survive. Imo, merging Clubs won't succeed. Establish 2 new Clubs, 'West' & 'East' & go from there.

One game live and one deferred "as live" game per week involving Welsh sides. Nothing mind-blowing but better to have than to not have

    Premier sports have all games

TG4 have 16 Connacht games and about half of the Munster and Leinster games

urc.tv will have 7 games live per round and 1 game delayed by an hour

TVNZ (New Zealand free to air broadcaster) are listed as one of their partners also

Anybody hear anything from BBC NI?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,869 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

As far as I know BBC NI are out, like RTE and BBC Wales.

The new deal with Premier Sports promised them 131 games exclusively live in the UK. These 20 games on S4C bring it to 151 games, which is all the games in the competition.

Would you know, have RTÉ stated whether or not they will run their Against the Head show this season?
It's probably the only show I'd watch regularly on RTÉ besides the news so it'd be a shame if that is gone from the URC.
Presume they'll have it just for the Six Nations this season.
Could TG4 run a round-up show? Now that'd be interesting.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,869 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The word from Gerry Thornley at one point was that Against the Head was gone, however I have never heard any official announcement to that effect from RTE. They have lost all their club rugby, though they have gotten Ireland’s Autumn Nations Series games back from VMTV. If it does run, I would expect it to be only for a short series around the time of the Six Nations and at a stretch the ANS. The difficulty is there’s very little they can show apart from those, there’s only so far you can go with talking, and arguably Against the Head was already talking-heavy anyway.

No idea if TG4’s rights include highlights; they haven’t till now.

A few other points re tv

In ROI, Premier is now only committing to show the four provinces each week (one of those games is meant to be exclusive, ie not on URC TV). As far as I know, they can still show every game, but are no longer committed to doing so, given it’s a commitment that was honoured in the breach rather than the observance. URC TV is meant to be now available for €40 for the season, so make of that what you will. I think we’ll have to wait for the advanced schedules for Round 1 to appear to see what the pattern is likely to be, but Premier have bit off more than what they can chew as far as rights are concerned and are very space strapped (and I’m not sure why they’ve gone cold on the notion of launching their rugby channel here - that would solve much of the schedule problems overnight).

Viewing figures for Premier Sports re CC last season have been reported on Digital Spy forum as being a paltry average of 5K per match.

As PS do not reveal how many subscribers they have this figure is most revealing. The CC will soon be 'out of sight, out of mind' with its contorted format and its niche TV market.

I guess the viewing figures for URC aren't great either re PS coverage. Ending BBC NI/BBC Wales and RTE coverage may be something those who organise the competition may regret.

Out of interest anyone use URC.tv last year? The aul sight isn't the quickest at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Qwertyup64

Yes - was really impressed, and was great having all the games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,079 ✭✭✭✭The Iron Giant

Can you even sign up for URC TV at the moment? Was considering it myself but can't say any pricing or ability to join at present (despite seeing the list of 'upcoming games')

Actually, having done a bit of extra research, fűck that...

"In the Republic of Ireland, subscribers will now be able to watch seven of the eight games in each round live. The one additional game of the weekend can be viewed exclusively live on Premier Sports. However, this game will be available on URC.tv, in full, 60 minutes after the full-time whistle. Premier Sports exclusives in Season 25/26 can be found here. "

    Ridiculous.

I can’t even download the app to check it out. The link takes me into a generic Eluvio Media Wallet app. The old RTE URC.TV app is still on the App Store but will presumably be uselsss for the new season.

Looking at the advanced schedules on Premier Sports website now and it looks like they are making good on their word - only the four provinces games live. (Though there is a delayed showing of Glasgow v Sharks on Saturday morning). That there is your incentive to fork out €40 for URC.TV….

All URC programming has been removed from Premier 2, the channel that goes out with the same schedule in the UK and Ireland. Presumably, the URC will now go out in the UK primarily on the Premier Rugby channel.

The good news out of all of this, if there is any, is that there’s three live Top 14 games on Saturday 27th.

edit: don’t know if Ryle Nugent has been reading this post(!), but the URC fixtures not involving Irish teams have appeared in the Premier 2 schedules since I wrote this!

Not according to their website. I wonder is this a misprint, in which case highly unprofessional.

I think they've quite carefully worded that as you'll note they haven't said you can see every game from every round live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,030 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

They seem to be putting the Irish games on PS1 and all the others on PS2 from the look of it. The Saturday T14 games have been removed although I don't think many of us will miss them too much

There's a codes thread on Bargain Alerts for NowTV €10/month for sports extra (Premier and TNT/BT) and it looks like it'll have all the rugby. That's €90 for the season from September to May

One thing I would be wary of is that without the Premier Sport Rugby channel they might change their tune and not necessarily broadcast all games every weekend

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,869 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

It’s a general problem re Premier. They have too much rights to do justice to everything. It’s great that it looks like they are still giving the URC the same level of coverage it did last season (and honestly, that Premier 2 schedule was completely different at 8:30am this morning) but that does come with a price, and it’s being paid by the fans of the Top 14 (which I suspect overlap a bit with the URC) and LaLiga.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,030 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I suspect that they picked up the rights quite cheaply for LaLiga after the folding of LaLiga TV and eleven sports. Top14 rights likewise wouldn't cost them the earth.

As long as they aren't spending too much on the rights or production (I suspect they aren't producing them in-house) however small a profit they make will make it worthwhile

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,030 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

That's true, very careful wording, we shouldn't be making assumptions

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,869 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

As I said earlier, they have very rarely kept their commitment to show every game live in the previous contact, so it’s probably just as well they’re recoiling from it. All it takes is two games at 3pm on a football weekend and that’s one already gone, as the FAPL 3pm is the number one commitment for Premier bar none, and won’t be moved for any reason.

I think on average there were at least two fixture each weekend that didn’t get a live airing on Premier, although at least one of those was sometimes on TG4 or S4C. They did show those games delayed in a post midnight slot or the next day.

Report on Digital Spy forum had PS with only on average 5K viewers for matches in ERC CC last season.

This is paltry and figures for URC are probably lower.
