They'll never change the way they operate. They deal in misery and division as that's what creates more engagement.

Studies are already showing that young people can't communicate effectively face to face, with many choosing to engage mainly via social media even when in the same room as the person.

There's a major epidemic of loneliness and depression as people lose these skills. If we had any sense, we'd just ban them and save the country. If others choose to destroy themselves overtime by keeping them accessible then they'll suffer the consequences.

Yes I can see how harmful that is. Do you think that banning social media (perhaps on an individual level) should be attempted for people under a certain age?

I think I may have seen this coming into force in the odd country.

Are there certain people who actually think that this kind of "social atomization" is a good or a harmless thing?(people who think it is a good form of social control perhaps?)

The solution is simple. Stop calling it 'Social Media'. Call it 'Loner Media'. Because that's what it actually is, and if you start addressing it as such it will be gone in two weeks. Definitely one year.

    this is a horrendous solution.

We already see online armies of Israel and india defenders who mass report anybody who even suggests they arent the best people or cultures ever. Im sure more groups has their mass reporting armies to the ready . you think this is a good idea?

The phrase hate speech is so vague - it usually boils down speech the receiptaent doesn't like.

Are minority group above reproach that we must all like them?

Freedom of speech should be the standard we uphold or are no different to the dictators we piss and moan over.

Calls to actually harm people is incitement and that's a crime (as it should be ) but banning statements of dislike related to a certain group(s) is just political censorship.

We are heading for chaos community notes enables hate speech calling LGBT people gays mentally ill is now ok this will have worldwide effects as meta insta threads is a worldwide app it's unlikely to be banned trolls and state backed groups from china will prosper on social media maga values and weirdos will take over meta all the tech company's are donating to trump to avoid regulation

The UK is is bringing in a law that says all UK adults will have to upload photo is or credit info if they want to visit porn websites .

So far no country in the world has managed to build a age verification system that is not a danger to privacy or unusable or ineffective .

Of course course there's no way that tech aware smart teens will get around this barrier .

Enforce actual laws first, before dreaming up new laws that will also never be enforced.

    It can't be done successfully.

    A few small things.

One of the matrices for child neglect should be a child under 12 with accesses to a smart phone with unmonitored internet and social media. The parents would be give training and support.

No defense of mental health when cases are prosecuted and part of the sentencing should include restricted or no access to social media for a set amount of time.

A media campaign reminding users that the internet is not anonymous including the like of Telegraph or burner phones

Although if you were a conspiratorial mind set, maybe the authorities want Telegraph users to think they can be anonymous.

The German officer's approach is a masterclass in shattering the dangerous detachment that a smartphone screen provides. He doesn't just issue a fine from a distance; he engages in a profound moral and psychological intervention. Let's break down why it is so effective and what Ireland can learn from it:

The UK has an Online Safety Act that basically means you either don't watch the adult stuff or you use a VPN which would need a credit card. That would keep most of the children off those vile American sites.

Decades too late but good news. Has destroyed tens of millons of lives. Maybe 100s of millions.

On a micro level I try to engage and challenge my children as much as possible on different topics. It’s near impossible for a parent to regulate and protect kids from the insanity of capitalism and general societal norms, so best I can do is try to influence them into some semblance of common sense.

Regulation protects people from big industry and banks etc. Let’s call it what it is , these companies give zero f**ks for the damage they cause or abuse they push on people , so they need to be treated like abusers against humanity and caged as much as possible to reduce the harm they will do.

I mean the primary motivation of capitalism is profit, trying to create checks and balances around it is like trying to convince religious nuts that maybe they shouldn’t get down on their knees and fully devote themselves to a higher power.

These pr*cks (the major global players) don’t don’t give a f**k about what damage their products do , I’d be happy if they were regulated out of existence , even if it meant slower progress for humanity.

Much simpler solution. No smart phones for anyone 12 and under, (for example) would be much easier to enforce. Make it illegal. Schools also jamming mobile phone signals also seems sensible. After that it is up to the parents. Keeping control of the internet password etc.
And it up to the parents regulate their children’s peer group. Teens don’t need smartphones at all really. They think they need them. Prior generations were grand even prior to the invention of the mobile phone.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Schools jamming mobile signals definitely is not sensible. It's illegal generally to block such signals and you'd be compromising safety by blocking them.
