Just got the email from them and then had a look at the papers. Article in the examiner here:

    From October 9:

    • Energia electricity customers will see their average annual bill rise by 10.9%, adding €3.94 per week.
    • Dual fuel customers will see their annual bill rise by 6%, adding €3.92 per week.
    • Smart meter electricity plan customers will face a 12.1% increase, adding €3.73 per week.
    • Smart meter dual fuel plan customers will see their annual bill increase by 6.2%, adding €3.71 per week.

I assume others will now follow? Lads, thats some hike in one go?

Just another way we are getting screwed over. Seems the wealth in this country just gets sucked up the way to feed the appetites of the rich and the rest of us pay ever more for the essentials.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Will all other providers follow suit?

Is it least affording the opportunity for those within their minimum contract period the opportunity to switch without penalty?

Energy contracts don't work that way; unless a provider decides to renege on a fixed price deal (which I believe has never happened). The base rate is always variable and does sometimes go down.

So thats another €200 out of peoples annual disposable and out of elsewhere in the economy as a spend ..

Its all down to energy prices being pinned to gas prices so even if 99% of the electricity used in a given hour comes from renewables the last 1% will always be from Gas and that sets the price for electricity. Until the renewable price is unpinned from gas prices overall prices will never go down.

The Government and electricity companies will argue they are using the increased profits to invest in the countries infrastructure but there is zero evidence of this and if it was true there would be no need for the constantly increasing prices.

Cynically one might add they are using the increased profits to build infra for all the new data centres which are sucking up energy? Would this be true, somewhat true or fake news?

Don't forget that the VAT on your bill is also increasing by 50%, form 9% to 13.5% on 1 November. That's another €80-100 annually for most households (and it applies to all providers).

I have 12 months contract with them and expiring in December 2025.

Can I exit Energia without penalty given they have substantially increased the rate?

No it's fake, sure the datacentre are maxing out our infrastructure already, they aren't building anything to cope with that.

We actually need energy storage as much as we need power generation as we're pissing away night time wind generation during the winter. The Celtic interconnector will hopefully help with that though and may even help reduce prices as the excess will be sent to France for use instead.

Is it 50 euro to break contract?

We already have the highest prices in the EU.

I'm sure there are other countries as dependent on gas imports as us, yet we have very high prices.

I’d say there’s no chance of it reverting to 13.5%.
Government will extend the reduced rate.

Also reducing micro gen export from 20c to 18.5c.

They had the best rate for the last month or so to catch as many people switching before this was announced and with winter just around the corner also.

Something needs to be done about how we as a country operate on something that is so vital to everyone.

all those holiday homes etc that got the credits on the last couple of years, owners must have had free electricity the last two summers 🙄🙄

I’ve been with Energia since March. The same month I got solar installed. It’s maddening that the prices go up but the export goes down. A double whammy for households like my own. The export rate should be set against the sell rate

Nope, the Celtic Interconnector will import most of the time, whether we have high or low wind. Electricity flows from lower price areas to higher price areas. Our prices are almost always higher than GB or the Continent. Why doesn't our wind and solar offer negative prices more regularly like our European neighbours do, since they're getting their guaranteed prices anyway?

I'm with them a good few years. Definitely looking at switching now but will wait a couple of days to see which of the others follow suit in putting up their prices (likely all).

Second highest electricity prices in world that keep on climbing as more unreliable renewables are added (we have 8GW of those with 6GW of demand) these require expensive gas backup and due to way market is structured the peaking/backup gas providers can literally name their price knowing the country has no alternative as most of the time wind and sun are not strong enough and generating **** all at random

And it’s only gonna get worse

    IMG_6222.jpeg

right now ^ only generating 20% of installed wind and solar with rest being gas and those lads can predict fairly accurately production and demand and hence can name their price as high as they want in the half hourly auction blocks

If I were with Energia and the contract breakage fee was only €50, I'd definitely be checking the comparison sites and doing the sums as to whether it was worth staying with them or not.

Looks like a bad call on Energia's part if EI are stating the day after they are not increasing their electric prices. Their price increase doesn't kick in until 9 October anyway, so time yet for it to be reversed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭Qaanaaq

What is the justification of this price increace from Energia? What cost has risen for them, if any, that they need to pass on? I only moved to them at the beginning of August so i am now wondering if i should move and take the €50 hit.

"ongoing substantial increases in electricity system operation and network charges" …. very vague

I'll be taking that 50 euro hit I think, will wait 2 weeks to see what happens with other providers

My one year contract with Energia is up recently. Yesterday I switched to Yuno, there is a big difference between their introductory rates and Energia's (at the moment anyway). It's hundreds of euros over the year.

It's very easy to switch Energy providers and everyone should be doing so every year - I wonder how many people don't bother though.

I'm sure most people know, but with changing electricity usage through ecars and heat pumps, before jumping onto bonkers.ie or wherever do the following

    log on myaccount.esbnetworks.ie/Api/HistoricConsumption

download the excel files of your actual usage.

Go to energypal.ie and upload the two excel files

    Screenshot 2025-09-10 112236.jpg

If your hot water and most of heating (if using heat pump) is done at night your can divert most of your usage to night rate. That will refelct in the data and the plan chosen for you.

Golden rule, like insurance; regular customer gets fcuked so change every year

Do you have PV panels? If so, what's the feed in tariff with them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,127 ✭✭✭facehugger99

I do and Yuno only are paying 14c on the export but it's still far better value than Energia given the import rate differences.

Wonderful, that's who was giving me the best deal through switcher anyways, was just waiting to see if there was any increase announced first.
