In what way would "being bothered about it" help?

SF's Pearse Motormouth is certainly bothered about it, in fact every time that the RTE Newsroom gives him a free pulpit he raves about it. I'm sure that PbP's Paul Murphy is too, but he's probably too busy saving Gaza at the moment to get on RTE.

Has anyone any proposals to do anything about it? Extremely high wages in ESB and pensions there end up being reflected in our electricity being the second most expensive in the world, but that's not the only reason? The cost of living is of no interest to our President, he never mentioned electricity price once but he has commented on affairs from Cuba to the middle East.

The high cost of electricity is hitting small and medium businesses as well as households etc. Nor hurting many politicians I suppose.

If you think about it, some of our politicians (mainly from the left) have contributed to the problem due to actions such as blocking offshore oil and gas exploration, banning fracking, delaying the constuction of LNG storage facilities and a new gas-powered electricity generating station.

Unsurprisingly, they're also the one howling the loudest about the cost of electricity and gas!

I think its probably time for us to organise and boycott at least.ine of these.companies for sheer profiteering.

They are all at it, but we only need to make one of the hurt enough. Let's say energia who were the first to announce the recent price increases, if we could garner enough people.power to boycot them.until.they.drop their price increase. It's 50 quid to break contract, and electric ireland have not increased their prices.

So lets say if we managed to get 20,000 customers to boycott energia and move to electric ireland, could it be done, would it have an impact.

We can't boycott them all, we just need to target one of them.

Ffs, some of these companies have increased prices by 20% this year already

Well, I'm moving from Energia to EI on the 8th of October. It will cost me €50 to switch, but save me at least 4 times that over the coming winter months - and there's a €20 payment for switching!

...and now SSE Airtricity have announced a 9.5% rise in electricity bills. Only moved to them 2 months ago.

I'm thinking of doing the same but I'm concerned that EI might reduce their discount percentage before then. I know they have stated they are not increasing their prices but there's nothing to stop them changing the discount percentage for new customers. Would it be better to switch now rather than waiting until 8 Oct?

EI just say that they won't be increasing their prices ahead of winter. It is open to interpretation exactly what that means. Given other companies have increased their prices, I would err on the side of caution and assume that it means that once winter has arrived, ie as early as December, they reserve the right to increase their price.

@Rock Steady Edy I can’t seem to quote post but I agree, I’ll be doing the same with Bord Gais once the October price increase hits. I transferred to them in late August and 15 days later they announce a 13% increase to unit rates and 12% to standing charge.

There needs to be a backlash now and at a minimum the companies should be forced to give a minimum notification period when announcing any price increase. The EI position is farcical with this bullshit PR of not increasing prices before Winter ffs. It’s a complete free for all at present and beyond a joke

Maybe there will be plenty of people moving supplier when their contract is up.

    I know I will be

I don't really care; I just want to give the b'stards who are currently trying to flog Energia for €2 billion a sharp kick in the balls.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2025/03/27/energias-us-owner-presses-start-button-on-multibillion-euro-sale/

If enough customers leave Energia in the next few weeks, then the sale price is going to drop, hopefully significantly.

They sent me a "limited time offer" to try and get me back there of a free Google Nest🙄

No mention of a discount or price reduction so they can go and swing. I already have a Nest even if I wanted it!

"at a minimum the companies should be forced to give a minimum notification period when announcing any price increase"

That would be good. I think it might be even better if customers were given the legal right to to move supplier without penalty when the price increases.

Agree, it would be great in times of price increases but might hinder the ability to benefit from price reductions (I know not a major concern atm) mid contract?
At least with more transparency on future price increases people won’t be transferring to providers only to find they’re worse off after a couple of weeks
