Have 2 robot lawnmowers. Their names are Dolly & Daisy in honour of Bruce & Pallister.

There will never be a crazier football anomaly than Bruce never getting an international cap.

I had a pair of cocker spaniels called Dolly and Daisy!

Soft spot for Tony Valencia - seemed like a great guy from a tough background and that one season where he was an assist machine for Rooney was gold!

Edited to add: the attitude/professionalism difference between Valencia & Sancho for example is night and day - and Sancho probably had more natural ability.

During his entire time at the club he was the best right back in the team. He played left back, but he was undoubtably the best right back. That he could seamlessly switch from playing left back at United, to right back for Ireland when paired with Staunton / Harte, was remarkable.

Its for debates like this that Chat-GPT was created.

Giving it the following factors it produced the below teams based on my time supporting - 1985 -2025: Individual Performance, Consistency, Team Achievements, Personal Achievements, Impact when absent / After Departure, Fan Popularity

    Frist XI 4-3-3

    Manager SAF

    Schmeichel

    Neville Ferdinand Vidic Irwin

    Scholes Keane Giggs

    Ronaldo Cantona Rooney

    Second XI 4-3-3

    Manager Mourinho

    Van Der Saar

    Valencia Bruce Stam Evra

    Robson Carrick Beckham

    Hughes RVN Rashford🤢

For a better balanced side in a 4-3-3, I would swap Robson and Giggs. And Kanchelskis for Rashford in the 2nd 11 in a 4-4-2.

    But Ronaldo, Cantona, Rooney 🤤

Valencia at right back shows the issues at right back since Fergie!

Also highlights our midfield issues since signing Carrick!

Surely there is some love for Paul Parker.

Was my favourite United player when I was a kid (no idea why). Gutted when he joined Derby.

hopefully this fella is reliable. Reşat Can Özbudak.

EXCLUSIVE | Eyüpspor has reached an agreement with Manchester United for the loan transfer of Tyrell Malacia. The player's decision is awaited!

Was sooooo good the year Valencia was injured and he got proper time on the right - was that the year he should have won player of the year over Bale who got it for effectively doing well against Inter?

''Amorim is understood to be unhappy that Onana suffered a hamstring tear on his second day of pre-season after returning from Cameroon where a video emerged of him playing outfield on a muddy makeshift pitch with friends.

The United boss, who was also wary of Onana’s omission becoming a distraction for Lammens as the Belgian settles in, reached the decision to move him on with director of football Jason Wilcox.''

I'm sure many players did things similar to playing in a muddy field with local kids over the summer. I'd hardly think that was major issue, and I feel the inclusion here is adding unneeded and made up context.

I'm not doubting there is annoyance over him returning with a injury issue - and maybe his physical condition. Also, apparently, asking for a new (higher) contract likely went down like a lead balloon.

I do thinnk our handling of the keeper situation this summer has been terrible - if Onana was a concern last season, and it only became worse from the first day of pre-season… why did we only make a loan offer for Martinez in like late July? Why did we rebuff Monaca offering for him, and make no concentrated play to move him on? Why did we only make a proper move for Lammens and Martinez in the last week of the window? Why did we tell Onana's camp he was still in the plans and not needing to look for a new club after the Fulham game? Why did we create a scenario where we made Onana available only AFTER every transfer window apart from Saudi and Turkey was shut?

    Utterly bizarre.

AND i am very concerned about going into the rest of the season with Bayindir and Lammens as our two practical options. If Lammens isn't ace, immediately, its a big issue.

Honestly, Lammens doesn't even need to be ace imo for now. Just solid, consistent, dependable, who defenders know/trust will do the basics ok -if he doesn't make many world class saves but can regularly handle most normal corners /shots - that'll do me!

Onana is absolutely no loss to the team, I'd rather have Harrison in goal than him.

I don't know what their thinking was behind their GK decisions. Whitwell said that it was only Monaco that were interested in Onana throughout the Summer and it was clear early on that they couldn't afford him. I think it was always likely that Onana could only go to Saudi or Turkey and there was a merry go round with regards GKs and the Turkish clubs that maybe had to play out before Onana could be picked up.

Making it clear they wanted rid of Onana also would've reduced their bargaining power in negotiations for a new GK and Onana wasn't seen as a troublemaker in the squad.

I think the rumour about wanting Martinez in a swap deal for Sancho might explain some things. It's possible they thought Martinez was financially unviable in a standalone transaction but if they could've pressured Sancho to join Villa permanently in a swap deal, it would've been their first choice. Or if they somehow managed to persuade Villa to loan Martinez. Plan B was Lammens.

the sancho thing confuses the hell out of me.

So we wanted Martinez for 25m if we could sell Sancho to them for 25m - so 0 wash?

So sancho doesn't go in a sale, but goes on a loan. So we get nothing for Sancho, but spend 21m on Lammens?

I’d say there was PSR shenanigans planned with Sancho and Martinez.

Artifically the fees of both and you create wiggle room for both sides. You recognise the sale price day 1. You spread the purchase price over contract length. Chelsea have done it plenty from memory.

I’d say in the end Sancho and Villa couldn’t agree on a long term deal so it fell through. Still happy to see Sancho out the door for 0 to remove his wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

    I get that…

But if we were happy to do that and buy Martinez for 25m… why not buy him for 25m anyway? It would have been better for us financially if Sancho was sold, obviously. But he wasn't sold.

So we got, effectively, no money in for him but wages covered. And then spent 21m on someone else.

I know the wages between Lammens and Martinez is vastly different but I'm not sure how Sancho leaving impacts that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Ah, it must be because Sancho isn't actually gone - so he still has a 15m hit on our squad costs via amortization. Without getting rid of that, we must not have felt comfortable with the 150k or so a week more Martinez would be over Lammens. Not a fee issue, but that Martinez wages weren't being covered by removing the Sancho amortization cost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,814 ✭✭✭DataDude

    Two possibilities I’d guess.

    1. We genuinely slightly preferred Lammens but were open to Martinez if Villa would play our PSR game
    2. Without PSR messing we felt we couldn’t afford Martinez. His annual cost is around £15m. Lammens is £7.5m

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,316 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Is the reason not likely to be Martinez's wage demands... That's what we were told during the summer.

Ineos are doing a serious job of reducing a ridiculous wage bill, as much as I wanted an experienced keeper, if they thought signing Martinez went against that work, then I'm ok with that. If you're taking a (much needed) hard line then there can't be any exceptions really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,227 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

But they had terms agreed with Martinez so he must have been prepared to work within the new tighter structure.

I think it was the wages that turned us off, plus he's not top drawer. Likewise Donnarumma's wages were something like 300k per week - the market wasn't huge for decent keepers this summer.
