Was a big risk joining LIV but it's worked out well and he's made a lot of money, nice reward then getting the invite.

No interest in the guy since he gave up on having earned a PGA tour card to go play mickey mouse golf.

Has it? Maybe in the short term, but he’s gone from being a rising star of the game to pretty much invisible in 6 months. Great for his bank account right now, but what about longer term? Look at the likes of Meronk whose career has taken a nosedive since taking the bag.

Agree completely, he's obviously loaded money wise but that's the big benefit. Apart from that it's like he's disappeared, you'd almost forget about him.

I'd guess he'll be back on tour when he's 26 with 20 odd million in the bank. Won't be playing for money then which will take the pressure off.

He's a very good player but he's not Mcllroy level of talent.

We might never see an Irish player with that level of talent again!!

Thrilled for him when he got his card for the PGA tour in the last event, felt it would give him a great chance of making the Ryder Cup this year.

No one can blame him for taking the LIV route given with the team element, you are guaranteed huge income even if you play rubbish.

Any idea how much he's earned so far with Liv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭big_drive

After earning loads but has lost his profile, you'd almost forget about him now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,515 ✭✭✭MayoSalmon

Yeah needs to set up a YouTube channel or something to keep engagement tbf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭big_drive

Yes good suggestion. It's that old saying out of sight, out of mind. When he's not popping up on coverage on main tours it's just hard not to become irrelevant.

As of June 30th he was supposed to have banked $5.2m according to national club golfer website. So he must be north of $6m after the latest round.

So Tom now has a team championship title and additional prize money on top of an already lucrative year.

That must put him north of $10m for the season. Seemingly plenty of the team prize money is ring fenced for "operational costs". Either way he's banked serious money this year on top of whatever signing bonuses he was given.

If he was on the PGA tour, he would have needed a win and a bunch of big finishes to earn that kind of money. It would also be at a level equivalent to say top 20 or so in OWGR rankings when you match the earnings.

I'd say what he's earned with LIV is about 4x "good" years on tour, retaining your card. Likely need to be sneaking into top 70 on FedEx and some signatures.

Financially it was always going to be a sucess for a lad with his talent. Watched him on the range at the K-Club and he was one of the best ball strikers there.

Must have been a slightly strange experience for him, relatively speaking.

All the Irish who played over the week were very well supported, even the more minor lads, such as Maguire.

But McKibbon had practically no-one following his groups. It surely must sting, at your home open, thats well attended, to be close to shunned

Opening round of 60 (-10) by McKibbin in the Hong Kong open for a 1 shot lead. The winner gets an invite to the Masters and the Open.

Wire to wire...lad is a serious player

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,777 ✭✭✭Trampas

I’m not a fan of Liv and the whole shotgun start, 54 holes, who signed up to it originally as obviously it was a big pay day for mostly also rans. But if someone offered me 10 million and chances to win millions more for the schedule they have I’d find it hard to turn it down especially starting out and you’ve no idea how your career is going to go

It's a huge win for Tom in many ways. Particularly when he doesn't have much in terms of main tour status and ranking outside top 100. Not the strongest field in terms of depth but you can only play your own game. We definitely can't say that playing on Liv made him any less sharp.

The manner of victory was just so impressive. Course record out of the traps, wire to wire, massive score of -27, winning by 7 strokes and entry secured for the two biggest majors. Obliterating the field was no big deal for the lad, seems absolutely cool as a breeze and very chill about the whole thing.

Will be interesting to see how he follows this up in Dubai.
