McIlroy off to his usual stinking start. 4 behind Scheffler after four holes .🙄

Not a deficit he hasn't overcome before. Besides, does it really matter? Only a regular tour event this time

I find it kind of icky watching world no.2 ,Grand Slammer playing like a 10 handicapper.

Must be some bandits in your club if they're knocking the ball around like Rory with a 10 handicap.

Was going well until water on 15, -9 now back to -6.

His mid-range putting is abysmal. Yesterday and today he had about 7 chances from 10 to 12 ft-not hole one.

The stats tell the story. Today he lost almost 4 strokes to the field in putting .29th of the 30.

He just checked out after that water ball. Couldn't be arsed to fight back. Good rest now and hopefully Ryder Cup will reignite the fire.

late getting to this, Friday evening 2nd round of Irish open, almost holed 2nd to par 5 18th.

Then proceeds to miss eagle putt from all of 5 feet!!!

Sure, when you need the other guy to put it in the water to win, it's hardly hard!!! 😏😁

Seriously though, great finish to the match, and fought back all the way.

And I'm sure all the naysayers were at the K-Club today to enjoy the golf.

    The man is box office

I properly lost it with that putt on 18. What a performance at the end. Felt for Lagergren also. Rory looks in super form for the RC now.

All of us absolutely gripped by that! What an incredible victory. The putt that went 360 and then the one for eagle on 18. Just absolutely nuts!

Rory played the 18th 4 times today and was -5 on it. Very hard to beat that.

Delighted for McIlroy, what a year he's had, would have loved to be on 18 for that.

    Irish won the Irish open-

Interesting stat -Rory had only one bogey in his last 57 holes. Pretty high class performance of disciplined controlled golf.

He has let tournaments slip through leaking sloppy bogeys but not this w.end.

His distance putting is just awesome.

Bookies will have to offer odds on who will lose to Rory in a playoff at this rate, specialty bets — how many holes, will par lose to birdie, or will birdie lose to eagle?

I was just thinking, a playoff between Rory and Nick Taylor would be interesting, he's also got a formidable record in playoffs. Probably never happen though.

Was listening on radio. Feel sorry for Lagergren after that shot into the water, but very happy for McIlroy!!

Rory is box office in Europe and the States ,on par with Tiger ….

Stayed away from all source's and watched from 9pm. Brilliant win, some putt on 72nd.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a roar like that from a sporting event on TV—absolutely electric, and brilliant to see so many kids celebrating with pure joy. Still amazed at how many detractors the man has, both here and elsewhere, especially when you see how much winning means to him and how much drama and excitement he brings, pure box office.

Phenomenal stuff by him, that shot in on 18 was only average but what a putt.

I felt once he got it to a playoff, there was only one winner.

He is going to bounce across the water to Wentworth now and hopefully on to the Ryder Cup.

I know he showed glimpses of form over the weekend but the form of Shane Lowry has to be a concern for Luke Donald.

Couldn't agree more. He's just so much fun to watch. Never seems to be able to do the straighforward thing. I left such a roar out when he eagled the 72nd. Pure theatre. Like you, I can't understand the antipathy towards him (it must be the NI thing). He really is one of the all time greats AND is such fun to watch. Compared to Cantlay, Scheffler, Shauffle et all, he's a breath of fresh air. We will miss him when he's done at the top level and so will golf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

100% to all of that. The antipathy towards him is part NI, part golf (people view it as entitled, spoilt kids, etc despite him being neither and his parents making lots of sacrifice to afford him the opportunity), part money.

Yes all the American players are so dour, so uninteresting, so guarded in their every move. Fair play to Rory he hasn't held back from a microphone at any stage and said what he thinks.

The sport will indeed miss him when he's done.

In Europe but no chance in the USA. Woods doesn’t even need to play and just be there and people will tune in

Couldn't agree more. Rory will go down as a giant in the game and does have a big following in the States. However, Tiger is a deity-like figure. He's absolutely worshipped and known well beyond the sport.

It's the same as Michael Jordan. The footprint of their cultural impact is enormous. You're talking about 2 of the most well-known athletes of all time. It doesn't take away anything that Rory has done; he is just not at that level of celebrity. Scottie won't be either.

If Tiger played the Irish Open, you'd have droves of people coming from the USA and Europe just to catch a glimpse.

Rory was blooming brilliant, wasn't he? & as other posters have said he's also total box office!!

He's Irish and such an exciting player to watch, he goes for all his shots, he is totally awesome in full swing, rarely boring & there's always a likely drama.... I mean what's not to like!?

It's a privilege to see Rory McIlroy play golf in his prime imho. He is an all time great, one of a very select few (6) with a grand slam of majors, the current masters & now Irish Open champion, and he's from this island. Go Rory!!!
