They couldn't. Chelsea offered him between £180K to £200K a week if reports are correct and he rejected it.

    It's bollocks though.

Chelsea were prepared to pay £25m for Sancho. Other clubs were willing to pay similar this summer.

What they weren't prepared to do is pay Sancho the salary he demanded . That's it, that's what it all comes down to. It's complete bollocks and horrendously juvenile to insinuate that Sancho is so bad that a club actually paid to get rid of him. No, they paid to get out of an obligation that would've cost them a fortune, and the penalty to get out of that obligation was seen as the lesser evil.

That was my take on it but others seem to think that Chelses rejected him and sent him back... actually talking about a 5m penalty fee rather than try to sign him.

Imo there is a huge difference between not wanting a player and not willing to meet his wage demands. And given his reluctance to take a permanent move elsewhere, it would seem he is driven by money and as such his demands to Chelsea were probably too high.

But only my opinion on the matter.

Is there another job where you get paid off because you stink at it?

The £5M basically became a loan fee in the end. Normally both parties agree on the contract before a loan with an obligation to buy becomes official. I assume United added the break clause because Sancho rejected whatever Chelsea offered killing any loan deal from happening and they wanted him out the door for the season at least.

But as you said Sancho is money motivated and honestly think he's more motivated to see United not earning money off him. Could have signed that Chelsea contract and put his feet up for the next 7yrs while still getting a decent wage. But we would have made £20M off him. His thinking is why should United get that when I can just leave for free and negotiate a decent signing on. Fingers crossed he crashes and burns this season leaving him struggling for club next season.

Cool yer jets there hoss, nobody insinuated anything.

The question is very very simple. Did Chelsea pull out of a deal to sign Sancho?

The answer is either yes or no.

If yes they did, then he would not be a Chelsea player now.

If no they didn't, then he would be a Chelsea player now.

He's now signed for Villa, ergo, Chelsea pulled out of the deal to sign him.

Chelsea offered him a contract, he refused it.

So I'd say it was him who pulled out, not them. They clearly wanted to keep him and made a very reasonable offer. The reason it didn't happen was Sancho, not Chelsea.

Stats look excellent.... Or the stats look worrying due to us only having scored one (non OG) goal from play.

I'm leaning to the optimistic side but until I see Sesko playing in the team, and us creating chances with him up top, I'll be a bit weary.

If Sesko doesn't work out, would a front 3 of Cunha, Mbeumo, and Mount (or ANother) get us enough goals over the season… I would certainly expect more goals than last year (that's an incredibly low bar) but I'm not sure we would be getting enough to get us in or around Top 6.

I would really love to see Sesko get a good run of games after the international break. Until we see him in the side for 5-6 games, it'll be hard to call how the season will go.

Top 6 is a mad aim, it's top 5 for CL and then the other Europa League/Conference spots are the next tier.

I don't think United will be near the CL spot, the gap to bridge is too much for one transfer window, especially with the hole still in CM.

I think United will score more goals, and have a similar enough season (possibly better) in the GA Column, depending on how the keeper situation goes.

I don't think they can get into the CL spots, so top 5 is out of the question. 6, 7 or 8th is probably possible, depending on how other teams go.

Just on the Midfield thing, and the summer transfers.

I think no matter how this summer was sliced, however the money was spent (take it there was a spending pot that was used), sacrifice the two forwards bought, and get Baleba for example, or not do anything about the keeper and get a lower cost striker - whatever.

There still would have been a hole somewhere in the squad that would be getting discussed as a reason for United not being able to compete at the top of the table this season. It was always going to be the case, the squad would have been unbalanced no matter the business done, in my opinion obviusly.

It has been stated multiple times that it's going to take, what, three or four windows to get the squad in any kind of shape to challenge for the CL

Wonder will a positive Utd story get much traction in the media... probably not, not even in here I'd hazard a guess.

This reflects much worse on the DoF and those running footballing things at Leverkusen imo. They knew (or certainly should have known) the type of Coach they were getting, when they handed him a 2 year contract in the Summer.

That they are sh*tting the bed already after just 2 league games is silly.

Any coach would find this season a challenging and transitional one there - not only did they lose an excellent coach to Real Madrid, but they also sold about 5 of their best players this summer.

I listened to the Lammens MUTV interview and he was asked if he had spoken to Amorim yet. He said he hadn't!

Not a big deal obviously but it's just noteworthy that Amorim did speak to Sesko before signing him. It chimes with the reports that Amorim was pushing for Martinez. Anyway it's just an illustration that this squad isn't being built solely in the image of Amorim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭davemckenna25

Of it speaks that Lammens wanted to join us and Sesko needed to be sold the project.

So can Lammens skip Belgian duty or what ? He wouldn’t be playing anyways.

To move house, meet the staff etc.

He also wanted Watkins though. I don’t think there’s really anything in this. Sesko had a choice to make between United and Newcastle so it’s more likely a call was needed. Lammens was fairly rushed in the end. There was talks about Galatasaray but the lad was on a flight to Manchester when the clubs were working out a fee.

In many of the places I've worked, they promote you up to a level where the only thing you can damage is a spreadsheet or powerpoint template.

possibly. few could keepers ahead of him. i think utd are organising a behind closed door friendly also so would be good for amorim to assess him rather than him sitting on the bench for belgium (if he has been called up).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭Seattle

Not sure about that, I didn't see any reports which suggested that Amorim had a preference for Watkins over Sesko. I just saw the the club was exploring both deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,316 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Found that very interesting when I heard that as well. My first thoughts were... That seems a bit weird and this guy won't be number 1 for a while.

I would have thought that if Amorim really wanted him and seen him as an upgrade... a quick call to make sure he was wanted wouldn't have gone astray. o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 580 ✭✭✭Seattle

Or even a quick call after he had signed to welcome him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,690 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Ben Jacobs (who seemed to be fairly reliable for info this summer anyway) had an article saying he preferred Watkins. Anyway I agree with what you’re saying that the squad isn’t being built for Amorim it’s with long term in mind for sure. It would be normal for him to want Martinez and Watkins given their experience in general but also in the PL. He’s clearly being consulted on signings but I doubt he would be able to overrule any of them anyway.

Carl Anka did a piece on him (which I haven’t read in full yet) and said:

“The 23-year-old was not scouted and recruited with the expectation of stepping straight into a starting role but the struggles of the two goalkeepers ahead of him may lead him to become United’s No 1 sooner rather than later.

What was intended as a long-term project could soon turn into a baptism of fire, highlighting the scrutiny that comes with becoming a goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

It’s a lot of pressure — especially for someone with one full season in the Belgian top flight as Royal Antwerp’s undisputed No 1.”

“United are not signing him to solve their immediate problems, but he has the potential to grow into a long-term solution.”

On Lammens in general and something I wasn’t expecting.

”Lammens’ most notable trait comes with his shot-stopping. His post-shot expected goals (PSxG) differential of +14.5 ranked second in the Belgian Pro League last season, behind only Gent’s Davy Roef (+16.7), and third overall of Europe’s top eight leagues.”

He’ll face better goalscorers in the PL but that’s still impressive.

Just finished listening to Anka (man he loves to talk) on Stretford Paddock. I'm guessing it was much the same as his article. He sees him as a young De Gea in a lot of ways, very good shot stopping, but he does urge a bit of caution regarding his stats and the league he's coming from.

He might get the number one spot if the other two continue to be terrible was the takeout. But they'll need to be terrible for another while before he gets a chance.

I found interesting when asked from a opposition free kick into our box if he was the striker who would he feel more comfortable against out of the 3 keepers we have and he said Onana.

Question was asked then the same but from a corner and he said more confident against Byandir.

I take it with a pinch of salt though as Lemmens hasn't faced either of the above in the PL yet.

Interesting, Romano claims that we did move for Gallagher on a loan deal.
