Who was the starting FB in that team? Couldn't quite make out on my phone.

    11. Shane Jennings

    12. Cathal Forde

Numbers 24-27 might be wrong as Devine and Hawkshaw looked to wear 12 and 13 when they came on but just listed them as 26 and 27

I had thought it looked like might be Harry West, good to know. Some nice tries in fairness but obviously pre season is a different animal.

Naughton at 15 is interesting, not aware of him playing there at any level previously. Good sign for him that Lancaster rates him and wants to get him involved. He's a sleeper prospect imo and one we need to break through ASAP with Jack Carty aging out.

Looks like Lasisi came on at loosehead, and seemed to have potentially slimmed down a bit, although hard to make out. Hopefully Barrett is trusted enough on the other side of the scrum to allow Lasisi to focus on loosehead exclusively. It's a big ask to have the mobility required while also carrying sufficient bulk to cover tighthead on occasion.

Nice for Niall Murray and Ralston to get an early hit out. Two guys who've stagnated in a major way, their minutes played fell by 57% and 79% respectively between 23/24 and 24/25. Both are still only 25, perhaps Lancaster can rejuvenate their careers.

Jansen looks sharp, he's a guy who hasn't put together many complete performances for us yet, but I think the taste of international rugby and Lancaster influence could spur him on to a breakout season as he enters his prime.

In fairness to Ralston he was injured for a large part of last season.

I didn't realise Ralston is only 25 - definitely hopeful that Lancaster can get him and many others back on track. If Jansen stays fit I can see him being our standout player this season.

A post aboutgoals for the season on the Leinster thread has descended into a wider debate about what it means to be a fan and whether it is even worth following sport if it is all about winning, so maybe we can make a better fist of it? For me this year there are 3 main things I want:

    1. No more than 1-2 home losses. I think we lost 5 times in Galway/Mayo last year which is completely unaccetable.
    2. Top 4 seed in the challenge cup- High enough to avoid a dropping down team from the top level and there is absoultely nothing to fear in our group.
    3. URC- 10 wins. 10 Tends to get you in and any year we have our act together we tend to be around 8-10. Wiht the fixtures we have and the disaster that is welsh rugby atm 10 is a tough but achieveable goal.
    4. Added bonus- Win a knockout game.

On a wider note things I'd like:

    1. To be confident in our first choice 10 going into 2026-2027
    2. Hugh Gavin, Forde, Devin/Murphy, Jennings and Treacy start to make another step up and be nailed on first choice. (Forde already is I suppose!)

Pretty similar for me, in terms of on pitch results the only thing I'd add is at least 3 interpro wins. We lost all 6 last season for the first time in over ten years (can't remember exactly how long, looked into it at the time but have forgotten now).

    Other than that:

    • More pragmatism, and more kicking.
    • Significant improvements in defence.
    • The development of a distinctive, and effective, Connacht style in attack.
    • Establish our first choice 13 and replacements for Buckley and Heffernan.
    • Decent game time for Fiachna Barrett, Sean Naughton, and Max Flynn.

Ultimately, more than anything, I want to enjoy being a Connacht fan again.

I think having a bit of hope is the main thing. Any notions of hope last year had little basis behind them.

Not saying this season will be dramatically different points wise but i expect us to at least look like a more cohesive unit than previously.

Not blaming anyone in particular and it's an almost impossible thing to measure but it definitely felt to me like we lost our soul in the last few years. The connection between the team and the crowd seemed to be drifting and we looked like an organisation going nowhere. Lancasters appointment is a huge satement of intent and along with Millard coming in shows that hopefully we have learned the lessons from the last few years.

I'm kind of glad we haven't made many signings for once. It'll be good to let him see what we have and don't have and build the setup accordingly.

Thing is that the academy is much stronger now with more players coming through.

The next step is to give these lads a go and that's been a problem for quite a long time in Connacht. Lancaster did give the young guys a go at Leinster and he'll give them a go here as well.

The future could be very bright. All we need is for three or four to break through and many young kids eyes from all over the country will be looking at the Connacht academy as a great way to go.

Did the players under-perform last season is the question i ask myself and I'm really not sure we should or could have placed much higher in the table based on the players we have. The problem is there are a few mid- table teams showing signs of improvement which leaves us treading water going into this season and in my opinion not reaching higher than 10th spot come the end ofvthe season. I just dont see any big improvements from the players or the new coaching setup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,786 ✭✭✭testtech05

Surely one major area that couldn't get worse was our defense if that is in some way improved which isn't a lot to ask imo then that alone should make a big difference

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,494 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well it's the little things that we need to get right. Bringing through younger players, improving in every area, just grassroots stuff. You won't see that happening but you'll see it in games if it's well done.

Goals for the season, 8th place.

Interpro wins against Ulster and Munster.

Take the points from time to time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭Mr Tickle

One thing that has me slightly nervous is the first group of games. Benetton at home, Scarletts at home and Cardiff away are three games that give me the "ah we should have won that" feeling. Having them up first when bedding in a new coach with whatever changes he's introducing could be tricky.

Then there's the Bulls at home, which is tougher, and then Munster away. Hopefully by then some of the teething issues should be improving

Worth adding the bench as well:

Replacements from: Eoin de Buitléar, Jordan Duggan, Sam Illo, Niall Murray, David O’Connor, Paul Boyle, Shamus Hurley-Langton, Ben Murphy, Josh Ioane, Sean Walsh, Byron Ralston, Shane Jennings, Colm Reilly, Daniel Ryan, Matthew Victory

Cool to see Seán Walsh and Daniel Ryan involved. They must be impressing in training.

I'm very excited about Lancaster this year with Connacht. I follow leinater and I think he's a much better fit for an Irish team than a French team. His whole shtick is honesty of effort and performing under pressure. The 'Stusdays' training style was brilliant at Leinster and I can see why it wouldn't have worked as well in France where it's more about individual flair than team cohesion (that's a crude characterisation, but I don't think it's wrong).

He brought really clear goals for personal and professional development. They're horrible corporate speak when done as tick box exercises in work, but really useful when done well.

I think Connacht will surprise people this year and I'll be delighted when they do.

There certainly should be an uplift in performance. I’m hoping for the best. It is still a squad with some weaknesses but they do seem to be looking at youth closely.

I think the game plan will be interesting. Can we exert greater control? Can we stop conceding really soft tries?

I look across the squad and it’s a big season for quite a chunk of players.

Connacht Will be hugely improved this season.

    I expect

    Better organised in defence

Better decision making in own half

    Better defensive mauls

Better when playing v 14 men

    More Pragmatic gameplan

    Better lineout.

Lancaster is a top class coach who will bring everyone up a level or two. Think Lancaster will also be very good for Ioane and the two young 9s.

I heard Lancaster is already establishing connections with clubs around the province, which is fantastic. From all accounts Wilkins dropped the ball/wasn't arsed to make the effort to sustain it once things went back to normal post-Covid. I could see Lancaster being a Lam/Friendy type, obviously not to their high levels of people skills, but still eager to establish networks with the grassroots side of things. That alone would make a huge difference.

Does anybody know if senior players are still assigned to specific youth teams since Friendy left btw? That would be another great initiative to get going but I know in my local club they stopped.

When you say senior players assigned to specifc youth teams. I dont really recall that happening much beyond some academy players maybe helping out in their own club. rather than any specific policy as many others didnt. and this includes many who i was in college with at time.

Lancaster doing more to integrate into the clubs around province wouldnt surprise me though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

There was a bit more to it than that (at least at our club). In fairness Colm was always about but Fitzy and Finlay were around a few times that year. I know some other clubs had ambassadors around for a couple of sessions and maybe a medals presentation at the end of the season but still brought the rugby community closer.
