If they are selling as a "Private Seller", you have the same comeback as buying from another random person, i.e. NONE.

There are many people doing this across the country and while selling cars is not illegal, doing so without informing Revenue and operating what outwardly could be construed as a "business" is leaving them open to prosecution/litigation.

That said, there are plenty who do this legitimately and you cannot tell just by looking at an advert. As with all these types of purchase, exercise some caution and if in any doubtful then move on to the next seller. There are plenty of cars out there for sale so you will eventually find once that suits you and from a reputable seller.

Those sellers would be classed as private sellers, I would not expect any warranty, even if they say they offer it. I wouldn't fancy my chances of getting any money back if the engine blew up a day after buying it.

Tread carefully if any of these sellers say they will give you a warranty.

No, what they are doing is illegal and you have come back, they are operating as a disguised trader

You can sell a certain number of cars per year before you are classified as a trader and it's quite small iirc 4 or do

There's nothing wrong with what you are doing but you have to stand over any car you sell, you can't do any sold as seen sales unless through a registered auction

In order to register as a business garage you need a premises, liability insurance etc. Not possible for the little guy flipping 10 cars a year from the house.

Not really true. You can have a LTD company, pay yourself a salary, and be VAT registered all from your front garden selling cars. The only thing you can't do is get trade plates, garage code, and TAN number

No offence taken. I have listed my cars as a trader in the past but I can't give warranty and offer all of the benefits that come with buying from a dealer when I am selling the car at private sale prices.

So because of this, I list my adds as a private seller, and its reflected in the price. No warranty, cheap price. I have absolutely no problem telling any potential customer that I sell cars. Nobody has ever had a problem with it. Never had to lie about it, and usually have a good chat about it if they are in anyway interested.

To be fair, I do make sure the cars are alright. All my cars are from Japan so they're fairly decent anyway. I change the oil if needed and sell everything with a new NCT and 3 months tax.

But like I said above, people won't pay dealer prices for a car thats being sold from a front garden. So I just sell them cheap with no warranty.

That's what I meant though, to register properly as a business garage as opposed to just a business.
