Not sure the left will be upset with Gavin. He is likely to be a super woke lecturing style of candidate.

    Eastwood's given up.

He is young enough to try again in 7/14 if needed.

But you said it. It was a stupid comment. You didn't include Dublin supporters in it, you differentiated to make a smart remark that means nothing.

Anyway I've had my say on it and will leave it at that. As for the election, and I'd be a big GAA fan, but even if Jim is included, so far HH is still my favourite candidate. But if Gavin has something interesting to say that could change.

Or in like 42/49 if he lives as long as his Uncle Clint…

When you are in a hole, stop digging. People have many reasons why they vote for candidates. Voting for Gavin just because he is a Dublin candidate is just another form of what you are saying above. The important thing is that people do vote.

That's the mother of all IFs in fairnes…

I still find it hilarious that some refer to the gaggle in the Dáil from the alphabet soup as "the left" when they are really just unsophisticated populists.

The only "left" in the entire world that doesn't support property taxes - the fairest of all.

anyone knows when the election date will be announced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,690 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

According to the Sunday Indo, it should be some time this week - a Presidential Order will be signed by the Housing minister.

Or paying for public infrastructure such as the provision of water via a direct taxation system.

The so called 'left' in this country spend most of their time bickering amongst themselves.

Yeah, you've indicated similar in previous posts.

Where are you getting this from?

The left candidate is CC,Gavin has my vote at the moment but if he's going towards the left on the issues you've mentioned i won't be supporting him and neither will a large proportion of the electorate.

You are completely misrepresenting my posts.

They are there in black and white for people to see.

You got triggered and can't back down.

    I'm not digging.

People who'd vote for someone just because they're from the same county as them are quite simply thick.

Gavin will do a lot worse in Dublin than posters here seem to think. He'll be lucky to get 35%. FF is toxic in Dublin and most Dubliners don't give a crap about the GAA.

Heard Catherine on radio today. I don't know her but not impressed. A GAA manager's first entry into 'politics'. Why do Irish Presidential elections turn up such sub standard candidates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 422 ✭✭Greengrass53

Stop digging. We all know what you implied there. You'll have loads of opportunities over the next7 years to vent your spleen over Jim Gavins unsuitability for the job.Enjoy the ride and try stay cool.

Why do Irish Presidential elections turn up such sub standard candidates?

Because it's an office without any substance.

All they have to do is act presidential, not get involved, open a community center, go on a state visit etc.

And if you notice it's usually the folks that look presidential in the first place that won.

But if Gavin has something interesting to say that could change

But what interesting things could he say to sway you?

He can't say he'll fix the housing issue, he can't say he will fix immigration, he can't say he'll get the children's hospital sorted.

If he said he could fix things then it would be a reason not to vote for him because it shows that he doesn't know what the job is about.

    Gavin will not win.

It seems some posters here need to improve their reading comprehension.

Something interesting that might show something of his personality even. He appears to be very uninteresting and boring. If he'd show something that might make him look like a personality that might make him look approachable and warm, rather than cool and reserved even. He might well be approachable and warm, Joe Brolly spoke warmly about him yesterday in his column. But I haven't seen that side of him on any public TV appearances I've seen of him.

I've met Gavin a few times in person and always found him warm and friendly. What you see on TV seems very much a persona. But it's one he'll have to ditch if he wants to attract voters in large enough numbers to be elected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,876 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

On the contrary, he's being recruited precisely because of his technocratic nature.

When you hear the man put together an argument and debate a topic, you'll realise that its his capability he is being nominated for, not his persona in the cut and thrust.

Admittedly, it will be a contrast to the more folksy Heather Humphreys, but only time will tell which it is that the voters value more.

Nonsense, but typical of the desperation of Connolly supporters over the last few days.

She was panicked into an interview on RTE, where like Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane she betrayed her friends Gemma, Mick and Clare.

Gavin has a Presidential air to him and in comparison to the whinging and whining of Connolly, he will look like a President. He may not win, but his candidacy will ensure that Connolly cannot win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,195 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

Dublin people will ignore that, happy to vote for one of their own.

He will say that he isn't running for FF, he is running for President of all, and that FF are facilitating him. That will be enough for most Dubs.

Y'all underestimate his popularity outside of Dublin. Now I am not saying he is going to win, but he ensures Connolly finishes third.

Jim O'Callaghan has come out publicly for Jim Gavin.

Thats all FF cabinet members. The Irish Times have spoken to TDs who have not declared yet, but who say, off the record, that they will declare for Gavin also.

Gavin has a 4:1 advantage over Kelleher in terms of those who have publicly declared, with Billy only having 3, including himself.

So this is all over, Jim Gavin will be on the ballot. As will Heather Humphreys tomorrow night.

With the writ to be moved to declare the poll this week, the question is now whether it will be 3, or 4 candidates. All eyes on SF.

P.S. There will be no independents nominated through the Councils.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,690 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Panelists on with both Pat Kenny and Claire Byrne suggesting that Jim Gavin is a boring media personality and that he might struggle somewhat in the TV debate format.

"…..Jim Gavin will be on the ballot. As will Heather Humphreys tomorrow night….. All eyes on SF. "

Yes. So far I think we have very weak candidates. That might give some impetus to SF. With a strong, well known candidate like Mary Lou they much fancy their chances. The question for SF is do they sacrifice MLMcD for the prize of the presidency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,876 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

You're forgetting that SF don't transfer well and never have. They have a strong base at about 25%, but that won't be enough to see them over the line.

Sacrificing MLMD is literally what it would be, and thats why she won't be nominated.

There should be a mandatory requirement for the president to have some legal background.

The Irish president only has one power, to refer legislation to the Supreme Court should he question its constitutionality.
