Not just Americans. There are many US led vaccine programmes in developing countries that will suffer too (many have already due to cuts to the foreign aid budget but this will double down on that).

Even for ourselves while the EU has Pharma's spending on R&D in this area if the US rows back from vaccine development will they be able to take up the slack? Vaccine development wont stop without the US but it may slow down.

Parallels with Russia where progress in reducing alcohol abuse were abandoned in 1997 to keep the masses sozzeled after the economic crash.

The couple corpsing are UK presenters, who themselves are not scandal free, but its a bit irrelevant to the video - the Trump administration wants all fellons to be held accountable…

Put a lawyer in charge who spent 14 years addling his brain with cocaine and heroin, what possibly could go wrong!

The people who were saying that Trump's power would be checked by next year's midterms may only have their blushes spared by the fact that this site likely won't exist by the time those roll around.

Trump's Plot to Cancel the Midterms

It always seemed pretty obvious to me that Trump would strive to cancel democracy in his second term. This was no great insight by me, it was just a passive observation of when he TRIED TO DO IT THE FIRST FkING TIME HE WAS IN OFFICE.

Newsome seems to be stepping up as credible opposition to Trump.

    1. Where does it say she resigned? In fact, in one of the articles linked, it says she is refusing to step aside
    2. I’m pretty confident if you want a covid vaccine in most, if not all of Europe, you can get one, regardless of age

Jan 6th, 2021, is never going to fade away. The U.S Air Force has rowed back on a decision made in 2021 that denied Ashley Babbitt (the woman shot dead inside the Capitol building on Jan 6th while she and other insurrectionists used force inside the building to get hold of members of Congress with malice on their minds) military funeral honours.

In a letter dated August 15, Air Force Undersecretary Matthew Lohmeier overturned a 2021 ruling that denied Babbitt, who served for more than a decade before settling in San Diego, military funeral honors. That earlier decision, issued shortly after the insurrection, said her actions “would bring discredit upon the Air Force.”

Judicial Watch, a right-wing group that represented Babbitt’s family in a wrongful-death lawsuit, released the letter this week and declared victory. Babbitt’s ceremony will include a bugler playing “Taps”, a two-person honor guard, and a folded American flag presented to her family.

The reversal comes just months after the Trump administration agreed to pay nearly $5 million to settle the lawsuit brought by Babbitt’s family. The suit had initially sought $30 million. Investigators had cleared the Capitol Police officer who shot Babbitt, ruling the use of force lawful. Babbitt had become a cause célèbre on the right with President Donald Trump embracing her family and framing her as a victim. The settlement provided a payout to her estate and attorneys.

Absolutely disgusting. Do you think she should get a military funeral @Manic Moran, or what’s the vibe on it in the military?

Probably along the lines of "nothing to see here, them's the rules, everything in order, checks and balances, all normal sailing".

Trump's the one who got her killed. Without his leading the stolen election charge, she wouldn't have been at the Capitol that day. The policeman who actually shot her was acting within his legal capacity after having told her group to stay back and not come through that door. The only way to regard her as a hero or martyr is to accept she was operating in a morally-correct capacity, which she wasn't. She was attempting to usurp a lawful election on behalf of her orange godking.

Which is exactly why Trump will eventually try to name a public holiday after her or something.

From when he put the military on the streets in Los Angeles I believed that was what he intended.

After doing the same in Washington based on nothing other than blatant self serving lies from him, I don`t see how anyone at this stage can give even a vaguely credible reason of it being for anything else

    Today https://www.rte.ie/news/ukraine/2025/0828/1530538-ukraine-russia/

Mr Trump "was not happy about this news, but he was also not surprised," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said

Back in April it was US President Donald Trump has said he is "not happy" with deadly Russian strikes on Kyiv and that President Vladimir Putin should "stop" - but has not said if further action might be taken against Russia.

    The levels of escalation :

    Someone said Trump said ..

    Trump tweets about he feels

Trump tweets asking both sides to go easy

Trump tweets a threat with a deadline that's far enough away to be ignored and then TACO

Trump blames everyone else for not rolling over for him

Thoughts and Prayers (this is the point where victims are even considered)

Doing anything, absolutely anything at all

Strongly worded letter to the Times

This is scary and I am not surprised if Trump pulls this off.

Dunno, I only just found out about this two minutes ago. I'm genuinely surprised it's coming up this far after the death. Maybe there will be a sensing tomorrow.

As far as the regulations are concerned, the default (by law) is that honors be rendered unless certain criteria are met (eg dishonorable discharge, suspect in a capital crime or sex crime). The one catch-all is "if the secretary of the military department denies it." Which, I guess he denied it, and then the new one undenied it.

In fairness, it took me two seconds to find this absolutely outrageous.

Two minutes is plenty of time to form a view.

You saying you don't have a view because you only found out two minutes ago reminds me of Wenger saying he didn't see the incident when asked by a reporter what he thought when one of his players got carded.

I'd suspect you do have a view, but as usual, you're military training is making you stfu and accept what your commander in chief is doing, because it is within the parameters of his powers and therefore it's fine.

I never realized being in the army completely removed independent thought. Such blond loyalty is scary. If he brought in Prima Nocta you'd be shrugging your shoulders and handing over your partner.....

One of Trumps first actions was to change the designation of thousands government (state and federal) officials from civil servants to 'political appointments' (schedule F)

So he (or people loyal to him) can fire then and replace them with party loyalists

Because he's a, ya know, obvious fascist

Russia/Putin really have some sort of hold over him,

Absolutely nothing Trump does or would "just asking" wonder about doing will surprise me. I expect him to be advised that a service award would be out of the question should he ask if he could do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭FishOnABike

By that logic honours should be rendered in the case of someone killed in the process of committing almost any criminal act (up to mass murder) in nearly half of the states (23/50 that do not have the death penalty) but denied for someone suspected of urinating behind a tree or in a side alley (public urination can be considered a sex crime in many states) if they are in or out of favour with 'the powers that be'.

It's a clear illustration of how far Trump and his supporters are willing to bend the letter of the law to their will. It should stand as a clear warning (yet another one) to anyone who values democracy and freedom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,546 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

She swore an oath to defend the Constitution, and she then tried to usurp the swearing in of a president who won the vote in accordance with that very Constitution.

She is worthy only of disgrace and the fact that another here who has sworn to protect the exact same Constitution can't or won't see that and equivocates rather than call things as they are is manifestly shameful.

“Russia/Putin really have some sort of hold over him,”

I think it’s far simpler than that- Trump envy’s Putin and the power he has in his own country- Trump wants that too - hence dismantling the institutions of democracy - Russia don’t have to have anything over Trump- he’s a willing lapdog

Oh she is , but this just means they get to have a ceremony with Honour Guards and the whole folded flag being handed to the family etc.

That she is being awarded that honour should be utterly abhorrent to anyone that served.

I think they view this in the same way that Irish Republicans would have viewed Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa's funeral and Pearse's oration at the event. It's not about the individual, it's about creating a ritual to burnish the legitimacy of the cause via veneration of a martyr.

It's pretty vile but we're talking about a man who…, well we all know what he is at this point without needing examples surely.
