This petty bickering over who has subscribed and who hasn't is ridiculous.

We're all supposedly adults here FFS! Most of us well over 30/40 as well I'd wager, but nonsense like that is exactly why this site has a real problem with content.

The other side is indeed valid issues with how it's been overseen and run as a whole but no one should feel obliged to subscribe, nor guilty for not doing so.

Everyone has valid reasons for making either choice. It's entirely theirs and rightly so.

If this site is to survive, this idiotic point scoring nonsense in so many threads (including this one) needs to go, or at least take it to PM.

It's bad enough reading it as someone here years/decades, but try and imagine how it reads to a more casual or even new user - exactly those who need to be encouraged to get involved at this point as the numbers languish at not even near half of the targets.

Precisely the sort of bickering that you are complaining about there . Why should you or anyone be the arbiter of what is said here ?

Maybe the aim should be to try to balance a negative with a positive ? Like I agree with you that bickering puts new people off but it's a bit unrealistic to suggest that it would be prospective subscribers which is the point of the thread .

Do you really think new people will sub when some long term subscribers will not for various reasons ?

Sorry did not realize the time when posting !

I think it's safe to say that many of the forums are of the advice sought ,/ given type. Imo, in the past few years, more and more YouTubers are creating "how to" or informational videos, which has negated a decent amount of need for using bulletin boards for answers.

So I honestly feel that the software used by the bulletin board itself has very little effect on users coming and going. The one and only tool which needs to work well is "SEARCH", and I don't find it that great at all, which means that I am less inclined to use Boards again to find (and locate) a previous posting on any subject in the future.

So people give out about look and feel, but functionality is critical certainly for advice based forums

A case in point - I just did a search for "Tado". It is an energy saving device for radiators / central heating.

25 results were retrieved, and not a single post with the word Tado. Posts with Tapo, Tad and one with Taco.

I then tried "Leeds United", and the very first thread listed was for the other united shower !!!

    Yeah the search isnt great.

I usually search Boards using google E.g. searching for "tado boards.ie" gives better results.

Agreed to a certain extent, but there is a type of concise expertise often available here that is considerably better than trawling through lots of youtube videos. For me in recent years this has included selecting a solar panel system, picking parts for a new PC, and repairing bikes and picking good cycling routes. I do also really enjoy the odd bit of well mannered banter with other long term members who I've interacted with over the years.

The search is a pain in the arse isn't great but I don't see it improving any time soon with the current state of play, the point @jj880 makes above is a good one and ironically also an example of where a text discussion works better than youtube.

This is one of the main problems I have with being asked to subscribe. The search function hasn't worked properly for years now, it's such a basic thing to expect from a website of this nature and nothing has been done to address it. Aside from that, if the writing really is on the wall for the site I have better things to spend €50 on despite being here for 23+ years.

Edit: and I know that could turn into a self-fulfilling prophesy if enough people think the same but I genuinely don't believe the owners have any interest in keeping the site running and this is just a cash grab.

I can't remember who suggested this, and because the search function is dysfunctional I'm not going to try to search, but it was suggested weeks ago that the title for https://keepboardsalive.com/ should be renamed, the poster even gave details on what to change and nobody has bothered to rename it from "Keep Boards free" to something more accurate. It's a relatively small thing but it just demonstrates to me that nobody in a position to care actually cares anymore.

This petty bickering should be addressed by owners. But they haven't. Which is my fundamental point.

FFS, it's none of your business who does or doesn't subscribe, stop derailing the thread with this rubbish.

I like the way you leave out the poster who asked the question but not surprising

If there is no more constructive criticism or feedback to be gained from this thread then I think it is time to shut it down. The back and forth bickering has run its course.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed here and thank you to everyone who has subscribed. Once again, I want to reassure everyone that we have taken all suggestions on board. We are working on tonnes of improvements in the background. Keep Boards Alive is up to date and active, we are still making positive progress towards our goals.

    Mike.

Jaysus are ye joint at the hip or something, dual responses a minute apart? Both of you and some others seem obsessed with whether ACD subscribes or not. It's none of your business who does or doesn't subscribe. Stop bringing it up cos it's boring the life out of everyone having to read your constant bleating about it.
