You mean as a salary for a job? A job they must spend months proving they are capable for, before ever receiving a commission to the role?

Why should there be?

The vetting process that is currently in place is extremely stringent. They don't let any Joe/Jane soap in.

Tell us what is your real issue with it? Is it that they get paid, that they are a security risk or is it just the fact that they are foreigners…?

That would be silly.

The window for age qualification for Cadetships is 22 years. Age 18-39 inclusive. Already a narrow enough cohort without discounting good quality people unnecessarily, just for the sake of waiting around.

The conditions already require that an applicant must "have the lawful right to reside and work there for the duration of your enlistment and commission."

That essentially means indefinitely, considering a commission could be 30 years in length, and presumably any successful cadet who is given a commission will be applying for citizenship in short order anyway.

As Sparky says, anyone who isn't up to snuff as a candidate, but who happens to have a right to reside, is going to be weeded out by the security and interview process, one way or the other.

The vetting process for Irish is stringent because the Gardai do a good job. You cannot vet a person who is coming from a place of civil unrest, where the local government is in danger of collapsing or carrying out genocide.

I have seen the vetting process for Defence forces and the Company Sergeant is a fairly good judge of character. Once seen a guy with "PIRA" tattooed on his knuckles told "No". I have also seen guys joining the FCA (back in the day) to dodge the immigration officer. From accounts from Training Staff they were no good and washed out after the threat of deportation went away.
