10% customs + €200 VRT, or just €200 if NI registered for 3+ months

    Hi Folks,

I just imported a car today and got the new reg number etc this morning.
I went to tax it but motortax.ie is not recognising the number plate?
The number plate is not recognised anywhere at the moment. I suppose there must be a waiting period?

My worry is the guy gave me the wrong reg number. Or put the wrong reg down on the documents. He didn't really seem like he knew what he was doing. That VRT desk in Greenhills in Dublin I would stay away from. The folks in ballymount are miles better.

They know what they are doing.. just wait 24 hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,582 ✭✭✭Bigmac1euro

    they really don’t.

They made 4 mistakes when putting this through the VRT. Only for someone that knows what they’re doing to intervene.

Guys, a crew cab van, Peugeot partner, from the North. 3 years old. What will be the vrt and expenses be on this, Have a registered company and VAT registered. Thanks.

Forgot to post this the other day. I recently VRT’d a mainland UK car that had been registered in NI for 3+ months and I only paid VRT.

I had NO further proof such as tax, insurance, MOT etc and still only paid VRT.

The reason for this was because the V5 issue date was 3+ months ago.

If I was importing a secondhand Tesla built in the Giga Berlin Germany factory does that remove the 10% duty. Thanks. It is a VAT qualifing car so it would be 30000 - Uk VAT @ 20% and then when lands in Ireland + 23% vat is this correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,408 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Only if you can prove it was manufactured less then 3 years ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 371 ✭✭zoom_cool

It is a 2024 car built in Tesla Berlin does the VIN not prove it enough?

I am looking for a car for primary medical cert. Normally buying new is better as you get the full vat and vrt removed. However with the high price of new cars I'd like to explore second hand. I don't think there are many cars down south where you would quality for the waiver of the vat element. What about in the North, would there be a supply of cars that may qualify?

Hi all, I’ve read through this and online and still can’t figure this out and help or guidance would be really appreciated

My husband is looking at purchasing a Hilux as someone with more space is needed for jobs around his father’s farm plus day to day stuff but he’s not VAT registered so it would be purchase a commercial vehicle and then tax and insure as private. The price for them here is astronomical…and we started looking at ones in Northern Ireland.

I checked on Revenue website re the VRT and with VAT paid on the purchase in NI plus exchange rate we’re looking at a saving of roughly €10,000 for same mileage and spec here.

What are we missing as I thought these days were long gone since Brexit?

You can purchase a Hilux in northern Ireland from a dealer and all that is required is you show proof that VAT has been paid in northern Ireland along with paying VRT here.

As they are dealt with differently from a private vehicle then there's no import duty so you're away with it

Importing a Van from NI to Ireland. Do I need to have a business to pay commercial VRT? or will VRT be different if I have the van privately without a business?

I want to import a van and have it on Irish plates, then convert it to a camper, so wont be taxing it right away.

Is a 2021 Peugeot Boxer, so not sure what this would be classified as.

Its €200. But You’ll have to pay the additional VRT when you convert it to a camper

Hi, I am looking to import a UK reg'd car from a NI Dealer. They imported it from England in July 25 and have the TSS customs declaration. Is this sufficient to avoid VAT & Customs duty? It's an EV so VRT Exempt.

Does anyone know any northern irish dealers that would import/source a english registered car and import to northern ireland for selling on to ireland. Thus avoiding vat/customs. This seems to be facilitated now based on windsor framework / revenue website

What is needed to import a car from NI now?

Is it true that if the car has been registered for a certain length of time in NI then VRT and Nox is charged only on import?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,694 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

My question is about calculating the NOX charge on the VRT website, if importing from NI.

I understand the max is 600 for a petrol car.

But how can I calculate the actual figure?

Where do you get the data to input into the Revenue website?

Thinking about a SKODA Karoq 1.0 TSI petrol.

For UK cars, the original V5C registration certificate should have it listed under section V - Vehicle Emission. There used to be a spreadsheet floating around from VRT office from a few years ago, but no idea if thats still available.

But if you cant obtain that info, if you know the Euro class of the engine, then it can be used as a guide to show what the maximum Nox charge will be.

Here is a breakdown of the NOx limits for each Euro standard, typically measured in grams per kilometer (g/km) - Note I pulled this straight from a Google search so you should check yourself.

    Petrol Cars

    Euro 1: 0.97 g/km (combined with hydrocarbons)

    Euro 2: 0.50 g/km (combined with hydrocarbons)

    Euro 3: 0.15 g/km

    Euro 4: 0.08 g/km

    Euro 5: 0.06 g/km

    Euro 6: 0.06 g/km

    Diesel Cars

    Euro 1: 0.97 g/km (combined with hydrocarbons)

    Euro 2: 0.70 g/km (combined with hydrocarbons)

    Euro 3: 0.50 g/km

    Euro 4: 0.25 g/km

    Euro 5: 0.18 g/km

    Euro 6: 0.08 g/km

Again if its a UK reg, then you can enter the number plate into a the Clean Air Zone checker to see what class the engine is.

Hi, Looking at buying a crafter van later this year in ni.

    What are the charges?

I see from some.dd ads that vrt is 200

Is there a nox charge too?

I'm vat registered so is the vat exempt as I'm.purchasing in ni?

There will be the doe cost as well.

    Then tax it here.

    Am I missing any costs?

If buying a used car from a dealer in NI, is haggling expected / the norm?
