no way. As it is, cost for the charge I got was nearly €9. A petrol for 50kms of range would have cost approx half!

I did my first attempt to charge on the road last week at an ESB hub in Waterford.

I had a few goes at using the CCS cable, but it wouldn't work. The CCS option was greyed out on screen. I plugged my own cable into the socket on the side and it allowed me to go ahead and charge, albeit at a fairly slow rate.

I had to stop at an Applegreen later on, and got more power there in the time it took to have a coffee than I got at the ESB in the time it took to go for a decent pub dinner.

When you used your on cable you were on A/C and probably charging 11kW depending on your car.

At the Applegreen, I assume you were using the cable attached to the charger so you would have been on DC and getting 50 - 150 kW.

    Apologies if I'm mansplaining.

I need lots of 'splaining, so keep going - though I had worked that bit out for myself.

The real question is why I couldn't use the CCS charger at the ESB though. Is this option usually greyed out?

I forgot to mention that at the Applegreen, there were two CCS cables. The first one wouldn't connect, but the second one connected fine.

Was the ESB charger one with a CCS and CHAdeMO plug? The so called triple heads

Most of them can only charge 1 car on CCS or CHAdeMO at a time, so if another car was plugged in to CHAdeMO then it won't let you use the CCS

They do allow you to charge 1 car on DC and 1 car on AC at the same time, which might be why your AC cable worked. It will be a lot slower as Josip said

The other explanation is that the CCS cable was borked, which does happen unfortunately

EDIT: Bit of a longshot but since you mentioned the second CCS plug also failed, it's worth checking the charging port on your car to see if there's something stuck in it or a loose seal

The plug has a safety feature where is won't work unless the plug is properly seated. Something stopping it going in fully could cause this to fail

It might have worked the 3rd time because whatever was there got cleared

The CCS plug being greyed out on the screen does suggest that the ChAdeMO plug was in use alright. An unfortunate downside of these triple head units for sure.

If you only need a splash of electrons to get a small onward range I find AC acceptable unless in a mad hurry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,451 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

It was a triple head unit, but no, the CHAdeMO was definitely not in use, there was no one else around at all at all.

The car is just three months old, and never had any problems charging at home, so it's hard to see how there would be a fault with my CCS connection.

I'll try it again on a local ESB unit, just for curiousity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Chalk it down to an inactive plug in that case? I doubt there is a problem with your minty fresh new car.

Although at home you're obviously not using the CCS component of the charge port.

See if other Inster owners have reported issues anywhere? You could also check feedback on that charge point - it might have form for this.

Are there any recent problem reports for this particular charger on Plugshare or the eCars website?

What hub were you at? I don't know of any in Waterford with a Type 2 outlet… Unless you mean New Ross, Wexford?

It depends on your rationale. When I drove a phev outlander I always charged whenever possible. It was about the same cost per km to use AC charging as it was to use petrol, but that varied dramatically.

My reason was more that I preferred how the car drove in EV mode vs in petrol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,378 ✭✭✭joe1303l

I expect the majority would use price point as the primary rationale. One would also have to value their time by some metric. If you still drove a PHEV with current eCars AC & petrol prices, would you really plug in every time now ?

Thanks, I didn't know that you could make or see reports. I see one report of problems going back to May, so maybe there is a problem there.

I wouldn't go out of my way to charge, as I didn't then. But if I was parking and there were destination chargers for instance, or I stopped to pee and there was a DC charger, I'd plug in.

Pretty sure it was the chargers at issue then, the fact that the CCS symbol was greyed out seems to prove that

The first failed charge at Applegreen was probably bad luck, they can be temperamental beasts in my experience

I'm pretty sure Ecars and Applegreen got a discount by buying up the dud chargers from the factory

They have replaced the cables at Supervalu Ballinteer now. I haven't tested them myself.

Does anyone know why the chargers at Walkinstown Super Valu are all down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,892 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

I've tested them, and have unsuccessfully been able to start a charge several times. A very common issue with my car and eCars charge points, and I suspect it's because of a combination of the very heavyweight cables/charger head as well as the layout meaning the connection to the car is very tight and squashed.

Same issues with my car at Carrickmines often. Zero issues on Applegreen, Ionity, Tesla, BP Pulse, Fastned etc. Just ESB and just on those particular newer styles of charge points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,454 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

    They had the cables stolen

I've had similar at carrickmines. ESB and applegreen have contactor issues in my experience, not really observed in others. The worst is easygo though.

You mean EZO? You know things are going bad when a company rebrands to avoid the bad reviews of the previous name

Exactly. And I had high hopes for them, they were the first non ecars mover in Ireland really, but they fumbled the bag big time using cheap 50kW tritium units that were unreliable and still installing single point of failure chargers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,892 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

I've not had the same connection problems with Applegreen or EasyGo/EZO tbh

Applegreen I've just had problems where the power delivery is incredibly low, and EasyGo isn't much better - but connecting is usually fine (and their charge point placement is much better than eCars usually)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,454 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

The only applegreens I regularly pass are Coynes Cross (M11 J14) and Tesco/Applegreen Gorey town, so maybe it's site based as opposed to every AG - just my luck lmao.

Easygo the units are just bad. Same issues with software that the tritiums have in the UK and Norway. Their app is also clunky AF, and they are very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,892 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

They promised a new app with the EVO rebrand, but I've no idea whether it'll just be lipstick. Their wallet method is indeed a right pain in the arse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

I will go well out of my way to avoid EasyGo wherever possible, and find eCars fine - just wish there was more of them about the place in suburban settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,761 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

They had a deal with a lot of the town and county councils around the country to supply dc chargers, they were never going to get the top of the range stuff for that

Still, it's better to have than to not have I guess

I had repeated issues at the esb fast chargers. I brought car back to garage and they resolved something . I got different explanations the last one being it was a software adjustment that had to be made
