Just looking a the new ID4 as VW seems to be doing some good deals at the moment.

Has anyone managed to fit a towbar to these? Does having a towbar interfere with the operation of the parking sensors.

Has anyone had any issues or electrical gremlins afterwards?

I think this is exactly the issue. It’s good enough to be adequate, but not many people are going back for a second ID.4. I reckon a lot of buyers are getting scared off and returning to Tiguans because the software in the electric models has been relatively poor at times, and you depend way more on solid software in an EV. People buying ID.4s aren’t really in the market for other EVs, so maybe the issues are not talked about enough on the newer models which still aren't up to scratch.

Yeah and I think it's worth pointing out that they appeared to be doing a lot of ID4 trade-up's and were very eager to facilitate the EV trade-in. Joe Duffy Swords.

Same here. According to the garage, and backed up by what we saw, quite a few ID.4s were being returned and swapped for Tiguans earlier this year. Unfortunately, we got a poor trade-in for our ID.4, so a Tiguan wasn’t within budget. That said, the Tiguan runs on relatively the same software as the ID.4, and personally, I didn’t like it much as a car at the time anyway. It's just a shame to see so many people coming out of ID cars after one go. I'm very interested to see what VW do next. Will they do another all electric SUV or wait to see the natural progression of things and decide on one car to replace both.

Went from ID3-221 to ID4-251, very happy both times love the 4 - either I am happily ignorant or don't encounter edge cases. Drove the 3 from Ireland around UK. My only issue with the software are:

    • randomly spotify fails to load and I don't know how to reset the infotainment, rare
    • Want to play youtube while having a snack in the car on the screen

Just changed my 222 ID4 for a 252 and so far love the new car. It’s all the things the old one should have been - usable/responsive screen, electric boot and much better HP for overtaking tractors... The first offer for trade was terrible given I was hit with the 10k price cut but when I pointed out it would save me money to hand it back, pay the mileage overage fee and start again with another brand instead of pay for their price cut they offered 2k more for the old one. Whoever said they dont care about the mileage overage, they absolutely do if you’re handing it back, so need to include it in your figures. They dont care if you switch to a new one.

On the android auto stuff I’ve never had any problems with wireless and the car. I have had issues with a Xiaomi constantly disconnecting from wireless but that was a known phone problem with them not the car and my Pixel has been solid wirelessly on both cars. There are rare occasions when android auto doesn’t properly start - it’ll start playing music but the screen is blank. A restart of the phone and/or infotainment system mostly cures that. Once connected I’ve had no random disconnects.

Folks, this is probably a silly question but did the 1st Editions get a charging speed boost recently

I plugged in at a charger in France earlier and the car and charger reported 170kW!

Not bad when the thing is rated for 135kW

Starting SoC was 14%, warm day (30C). I'm on 3.8 software for what it's worth

I haven't heard about that, but have seen that some owners noticed that the AC charging was reduced from 11kW to 7kW.

A fix should be included in the next OTA (3.83 ?) but can be fixed by the dealer if needed before that.

Not an issue for me so will wait for the fix to come through.

Ours is glitchy. Similar to the 221 we had before but different issues this time. We took it to Kilkenny over the weekend and on the trip back when I plugged in my phone to use Android Auto, the screen just went blank. We reset the infotainment and all was fine but it those kinds of things that really bug me about it as a car.

Something is up with it, you need to make yourself a nuisance at the garage to make sure they fix it. There's a problem in your infotainment or GPS antenna or something

I agree that a €40k car should just f**king work and not be a struggle. As I mentioned before, car manufacturers seem to be under the impression that customers enjoy visiting the garage when in fact they normally want to be anywhere else

I don't consider it a VW thing, seems most of the legacy brands have a similar philosophy

The car locking as you walk away work properly for people. Trying it for the first time this week.

Been hit and miss so far.

The range on my fob is pretty poor anyway. So maybe that's affecting it?

The range on my fob is pretty poor anyway.

I think the poor range is actually by design. Its to counteract the repeater systems that the thieves use to rob your car.

And if anything it should cause the car to lock quicker as you walk away as it will detect that the key is outside its range.

I use auto open but I turned off auto lock as I dont always want it to lock when I walk away and it started to annoy me but each to their own on that.

I also use auto open but turned auto lock off as I found it more annoying than helpful. Given the wife rarely remembers to lock the car I figured I’d give it a try but turns out there are plenty of times I walk away and dont want it to lock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,345 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

But if it auto-opens when you approach it, who cares?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭BigMoose

I forget what annoyed me but it might have beeped like mad when walking off leaving the boot/doors open when unloading the shopping or unlocking the house before coming back for the dog. Maybe I'll try again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭n.d.os

Same. With our key fob you litterally have to be straddling the car for it to work.

To be honest, I find the car glitchy and unreliable. One day something won't work, and then it runs okay for the next week making it nearly impossible to diagnose issues with it. I don’t think taking it to a garage and saying “this thing is rubbish” will help much. It feels more like something you just have to live with, and hope the next VW model is an improvement before buying again. I had a bad feeling about it from the moment I got in, but my wife was adamant about sticking with the brand and its her car. As I’ve mentioned before, I thought the new Tiguan’s interior was awful. The whole experience of a modern VAG car lacks tactility, poor response, sensitivity, and overall user-friendliness. I moved away from Audi for similar reasons.

You definitely got unlucky as my 252 is fine. None of the glitches and quirks the 222 had. Fob works from the house, but noticeably not as far as the 222 fob did but I can understand why that is, makes good sense.

I get where you're coming from, but I'll say in retrospect that I wish I'd stood on the garages heads about a few of the issues I had over the years. I think if I'd logged them before then I'd have gotten more goodwill for some of the issues I had in the past year

I'll turn off the lock when walk away tonight.

Doesn't work really on my car. Never had it before so I'll not miss it.

The car has a couple of glitches but nothing that bothers me. Android auto doesn't always connect but assume thats an AA issue.

During charging sometimes shows Zero percent battery despite the car at 50 or 60%.

The mirrors wouldn't go back out yesterday after being turned in. Opened and closed a couple times and sorted.

Its a very good car. Ive done 6000km since 4th July and I'm an EV convert down to how effortless the id4 made changing.

VW just obviously happy enough to let a few bugs go.

I just see digital extras on mine as new, letting me buy Connect & plus (both listed as active till '27), as much as I hate subs, that traffic planning is handy as is plug and charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

Games, a console? And a spotify app. Free

    15e for some wellness app

Shows Connect and plus as free till July 27

You mean in the car? I presume the Android app doesn't have games

Had the same issue with the wing mirrors on our Kilkenny trip come to think of it. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,766 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

Yes. New App to download to car.

    Few simple games. Bubbles etc..

Not opened the other app yet. Uses phone to play games.

Spotify app from car is useful. Don't need the phone now for navigation and spotify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭BigMoose

Driving the new car a little more I have noticed AA wireless end up with a blank screen (but music playing) happening more often. Restart the infotainment system and it’s fine every time - and restarting it is much less faff than the old car. I assume it’s the version of AA in the car that has the bugs.

Spotify and nav from the car will only replace the phone for me when the car nav has speed vans and the other useful stuff you get from Waze…

    Nope

Folded in with the switch as was tight road.

Couldn't get them out again. Switch, lock, unlock. Worked after 5 or 6 times
