I think it might have been failed transactions that odhran incorrectly had attached to it based on his message in announcements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,467 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I think he corrected that though? The count on the status page is accurate I believe.

I'm not certain though. It's hard to keep up with facts vs speculation at this point

From Odhran in the Important News thread:

Numbers to date are 643 total customers so many thanks to everyone that has subscribed for ad free so far. I will breakdown some of the numbers here. NB - I made an error on the total subscribers I was reporting (699) .. the report was pulling in total customers which included some category of failed payments for some reason… apologies. I have updated the stats sheet.

So doesnt look like subs are being cancelled. At least not to the extent of nearly 60 subs…

Could making subscription costs compulsory for newbies work?

Even just a nominal fee to reg, say €2.50

Trolls be more likely to stay away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,627 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

People need to try before they buy though.

Maybe one month read only for free and then a nominal fee for full access.

The site still needs to be publicised externally though or else very few people outside the community will know Boards exists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭Soc_Alt

Making new joiners pay a fee to join....WTF.

99.9% of people planning to join boards wouldn't if there was a cost.

Sure just kicking everyone off boards except for the the 300 or so subscribers.

Cost should be cheaper to run an Echo Chamber Club of 300 members.

I know I’ll get some stick for this but I’ve been on boards.ie for over twelve years and have always enjoyed being part of the community on here until I joined the soccer forums.
The moderation on there in general is way over the top but after twelve years of not even a warning from a mod I’ve had two lengthy bans from a moderator… the last one for suggesting that some negative posters might be better off supporting a different team.

I tried to reason with the mod but to no avail.
He is the sole reason I won’t subscribe which is a shame really.

No hope. I'd dare say the vast majority often signup because they followed something they found in Google search. If the first thing they see from an unfamiliar site, from which they've gained nothing at that point, is a demand for money, then all they'll do is close the tab and find something free in that prior Google search.

Or if they did pay, how many would sign up to ask a single issue question, get their answer then chargeback the fee, leading to boards.ie being branded dodgy by card processors.

The amount of people who would sign up, for even a negligible fee like a Euro, to post on the site would be absolutely tiny. It would kill things off completely.

I think re-regs - god bless them - are just a feature of these kinds of forums.

If it's any consolation - albeit a small one - they'll miss the place more than anyone if and when the lights are turned off.

Also the amount of members who won't sub because of a gripe with 1 moderator is unreal on a site with so much more to offer than one thread or 1 forum. I have gripes with probably 4-5 moderators, big deal. Water off a ducks back.

I was just thinking out loud about getting more subscribers , how to increase the needed funds , it is shame that not everyone would at least help in some way to save the site

You're a regular contributor to a thread I follow, and a very valued one at that, given the amount of great posters that fell away from that thread over the last few years. You always come across as very balanced, with a fair assessment of things.

I'm not aware of any other platform to get the discussion on Kilkenny hurling we get on here. Plus I get great value from other threads and forums too, so I'm definitely coming at this from a selfish point of view.

I understand your gripe with the mod, and that can be hard get past, but the baby and bath water scenario comes to mind here. If you enjoy the community aspect of Boards (soccer forums aside), that will be gone if the site closes, reflection is all we'll be left with. I don't want that to happen and not saying you do, but enough decisions like that and it will. Certainly wouldn't give you stick for your decision, but I'd ask you to reconsider.

Thanks very much Butterbeans and I really do appreciate how petty this comes across to other posters.

But my God if you saw the immature responses I got from a person clearly getting off on the little bit of power they have on here you wouldn’t believe it. I honestly think it’s a huge factor as to why Boards has been dying for a while now.

I rarely open boards these days and almost never post on it.

Thanks again for your post my friend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 547 ✭✭✭Butterbeans

Ah no, not petty. We all make our decisions based on our experiences. We can right some bad ones with ourselves, some we can't.

I've never had an issue with a mod and I reckon anyone who has should take a quick look at themselves too.

But my issue with subbing is with the owner. Don't trust them, don't believe they have a plan to save the site. Don't think they'll do anything with the money received to improve the site, just their own situation/circumstance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,110 ✭✭✭✭con747

If you research the owner I don't think he needs the few quid this will generate and lets not forget the 200K+ debt the place is carrying that he's trying to pay off, I really don't see how doing all this for a paltry money grab is his intention.

I have no idea who the owner is. All I know is that he bought the site, did nothing to it other than pay the bills (fair enough) and lumped us with vanilla.

And now the business plan is throw ads at the site to make it worse for non payers with the hope that it will increase subscriber counts with no plan whatsoever to address falling user count.

I’d echo what Butterbeans is saying Charlie.

I was a member from 2008 in a different skin and left boards for a few years for a similar reason. My issue was actually how they dealt with a complaint I made (not even a complaint against me). When I left boards I didn’t go anywhere else and learned to not miss it if I’m honest.

I came back actually to use it for tips on stuff (like France or sleep apnea or neuro diverse stuff). I have only looked at Reddit and other places briefly but I just haven’t taken to them.

I paid the fee , in spite of my own personal resentment to how I was previously treated, because when this goes, my involvement in these sort of places will be gone for good. I like the familiarity I have with this place.

From an objectively cold perspective, I have put logic ahead of my feelings. I want the site to continue and don’t want my feelings to override what I know I would prefer longer term. Based on the time I’ve spent here, a cup of coffee a month isn’t a huge commitment (no matter how hyperbolic some want to get about the sub fee).

Just so I’m clear , I’ve no issue with people taking a stance on this or not paying the sub. I simply want boards to continue more than any grievances/concerns.

This is great news and a wonderful move. Hopefully it will help draw more subs. I was planning to sub anyway but I had been holding out in the hopes of carrier billing becoming available. This news made me decide to just go for a month now and then change to annual next month. I'm so glad to be supporting.

I have almost €200 of 3 credit that expires in mid September so boards will be welcome to it if they can get that enabled by then. If not, I'll switch to annual then anyway and just pay the €50. I may have to find another worthy cause to spend my credit on but obviously I'd rather it goes here.

@Boards.ie: Mike and @Boards.ie: Odhran I'm sure you're on to it but I think advertising the new subscribers only forum sitewide would be critical. I think it will sway plenty who are on the fence but only if they know about it.

*** boards.ie needs our help to keep going! ***

In a year's time, which would you miss more? €50 or boards?

Just back after a long absence.

Will have to pay for the month at the end of this month anyway and see how it goes , would be sad to see the site go no matter what.

    I think that's probably a good idea.

Can I ask how will we receive these invites?

    PM,email etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,653 ✭✭✭✭elperello

The answer is in the message you quoted.

If you are a subscriber and have not received an invite contact them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,137 ✭✭✭SineadSpears

    Both.

Subscriber's will receive a PM and then an email notification that you have been sent a message on Boards.

Might depend on your settings though. If you are set up to receive email notifications for PM's.

Either way, subscribers will at least receive a PM invitation.

You're not showing as a paid member. If you subscribed with different email address than one linked to your account, contact Mike or Odhran and they'll sort that out.
