I was having a discussion with my pals about it. I think VAR should have come in because it is clear and obvious it's a foul, makes no contact with the ball and brings Cunha down. From first angle live it's very difficult to see so no fault on the referee not calling it live but this is where VAR should bring him to the monitor to look, if he's still happy not to give it I'd be amazed but at least he's had the full picture to stand by his decision.

Between this and Mike Dean's comments I think the only sensible solution is to remove VAR from English football because the people responsible for it are completely incapable of making a correct decision.

I was thinking during the game that the ref was letting alot go in general, maybe it's a new policy. While we could have had a pen, it made for a better game.

I was delighted with how we played but we just have to get a keeper, we are at nothing if we keep conceding these goals.

I saw a thread about signing Donnarumma and the point was made that Onana has actually marginally better overall stats, but it's the ones he (and Bayindir) throw into the net that are the killer. We need a steady hand.

Cunha and mbeumo looked the real deal. Definitely look to have the presence for the shirt.

But this is the thing about the 'clear and obvious error' guideline for VAR. It gets interpreted differently all the time.

Some people think that it means the referee must have a moment of incompetence before sending him to the screen, ie. he should have seen and processed the incident in real time and decided it was a foul.

Whereas others think that if you see something that looks like a clear foul in one of the replays then you should send him to the screen, even if the on field decision was perfectly understandable from the ref's view/perspective in real time.

This is my issue with VAR - it is open to too much interpretation and some of the guidelines are fuzzy at best.

Another pet peeve of mine is when a ref is sent to the screen, is he supposed to re-ref the decision? Or is allowed to say 'yeah, it's probably a penalty looking at it again, but I don't actually think this was a "clear and obvious error" from me, so I don't think you should have sent me to the screen and I'm not going to overturn the decision'.

Not a foul on the keeper.

Mount , maybe. Keeper weak as piss.

Attacking player drags at the keepers arm. Keepers are protected, that is usually a free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,269 ✭✭✭paulbok

Easy way to see if it is a foul, have a United player do the exact same next week and see if a free out is immediately given.

Is issue isn't VAR, it's the English refs looking out for their buddies on the pitch. If that happens in Europe you can be sure VAR are asking the ref to take a look because they do it right.

"I don't play that game". What a load of horse **** from Gallagher.

Trying defending that decision is baffling.

    EVENFLOW

By clicking and watching it you're giving Sky exactly what they want. Dermot Gallagher doesn't believe any of the **** he says. Hes making clickbait soundbites for his employer because if he doesn't then he'll be replaced by another ex-ref that will. We didnt get the free out and we didn't get the penalty and saying we should have got them won't get any clicks for Sky. It's that simple.

Yep. Same with Roy Keane and sky. Same with Simon Jordan and Martin Keown on talksport.

It's all a game of sound bites, clicks and cash dollar.

Jordan has been a voice of reason this past while when talking about utd in fairness.

I'm glad it's getting so much air time being honest because far too often it's brushed under the carpet.

Ah his over the top analysis of Amorin and constant "biggest club in the world" and "like a horrific car crash" sound bites etc

We all know how big United is and how much the standards have dropped since and probably even a little bit before Fergie left

Its drab boring over the top repetitive dross

For the love of God please let this happen

Inter Milan are monitoring the situation of Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, 29, with speculation still growing over his future at Manchester United. (Sun)

Napoli apparently looking at ramus on loan after lukaku injury, that seems like a deal everyone could get behind

Have to correct you on Pogba and Sancho fees. €105m in 2016 and €85 in 2021 are very different especially with football inflation.

Anyways, you’re right that he was nowhere near the let down that Sancho was.

Ultimately Pogba was just far too inconsistent for the world record transfer of the time.

Talking about bad value for money, just remembered Juan Sebastian Verón!

Can't say I agree with you there. He's spoken well about RA and how the club should give him time as he's driving up those standards. He does speak from an owners perspective a lot and doesn't have a lot of time for the player power that's taken over football, so maybe that's why I agree with him more these days.

A bidding war for young Rasmus? Napoli could be an interesting move. Transfermarkt says they have three other CFs. Two are players that have returned from loan and the other is a player they got in on loan from Udinese.

Not sure what the striker situation at AC Milan is but Napoli would be the better club. Conte is a good manager and the move there has worked miracles for McTominay.

Galatasaray have bid 20m + add ons for Diogo Costa...if that's the feeling then surely we should be bidding

They're supposedly close to signing Senne Lammens so I doubt its true

Hoijlund would really improve under Conte. It's a great opportunity for the lad, way better than wasting away on our bench for a year.

Pogba get's lumped in on this things because talent wise, he had it all. Could have been the best midfielder in the world during his generation if he really wanted to.

His agent didn't help either, running his mouth to the press every 2nd week while Pogba had poor games.

He's not in the running for oue worst signing but certinatly ranks high on the wasted talent list.

Apologies, yes you’re right on fee.

I do think fact Pogba left on a free twice and had a pretty polarising personality clouds peoples judgement on him. Expectations we are also off the charts.

Just had a look back on his historical sofascore ratings. Not saying they’re perfect but they are definitely a very good indicator.

    16/17- 7.66 (1st out of 16 players to play 50% minutes)

    17/18 7.40 (2nd out of 14)

    18/19 7.21 (1st out of 14)

    19/20 7.13 (3rd out of 15)

    20/21 6.98 (7th out of 15)

He’s statistically our second best player post Fergie (after Bruno)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,177 ✭✭✭NITRO95

A perfect example of why stats should never be taken as fact because anyone that actually watched the games can tell you Paul Pogba is not even close to our second best player in the past decade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,814 ✭✭✭DataDude

I disagree, he trailed off badly at the end but imo he was clearly our best player in his first few seasons. The stats back that up and I’m confident the players at the time would agree.

Stats are much more reliable than memories.

Who would you put above him? Transfer fee, wages & off field attitude aside.

    I'm getting bangkok flashbacks now.

He was reportedly the top keeper target for clubs all last summer at around 65m, apart for one rumour to City earlier in the summer I didn't notice too many this year for him, what has happened to him?

I would have thought we'd be all over him at that price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,271 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I kinda see your point because there isn't much competition. But I would say Rashford has to be ahead of him. But there's been nobody who has been consistently good for long enough except for Bruno.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

So other than his exorbitant fee, his outrageous wages and his awful application and attitude that contributed to destroying the club I've to rate him. This is giving me what have the Romans ever done for us vibes.

Players that contributed more to Utd since Pogbas transfer in no particular order ; Bruno, David De Gea, Rashford, Ronaldo, Scott McTominay, Casemiro, Maguire, Shaw, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and thats just off the top of my head. I don't particularly care what stats you manipulate to say Pogba was good, I watched all those games and I know what I saw and I remember the debates on here.

Pogba isn't quite on the Sancho level but that doesn't mean he was good either. And overall his transfer did more damage to the dressing room than can be quantified by his passing percentages or aerial duels won in the middle third of the pitch.
