The sms provider you use can upload all client details or inform you of the requirements. Mine sent very clear and easy to understand details. A UK based connected company that uses a different sms provider got details too and no issues reported on the texts.

    Registration took 2-3 minutes

So not baffling whatsoever. Fairly straight forward

Well that's the exact scenario its supposed to protect so unless you are mistaken then it sounds like it's not working.

No excuse. This has been well documented for months and ComReg were very clear what needed to be done. This was first mooted back in June 2023 so anyone caught out at this stage just didn't bother doing anything until now.

I work in IT Security and the first I heard about it was on this thread. So it might have been documented for months but it only became news in the past week or so.

To be honest, documented for months, isn't really good enough either. IT Ops and Security departments have a schedule for the year. It going live in July, when alot of people are on holiday is bad planning. Announcement in March, saying it would be going live the following March, with it going into blocking mode in May would be more the norm.

Important texts to me from a hospital have been tagged as Likely Scam. Not good enough

You need to review your environmental scanning: with very little effort, I found this public press announced from February, and I'm sure there will have been industry announcements well before that.

As per my post, an announcement in February, I would not be expecting it to be implemented in July.

My company dont send texts so maybe I read it, but didnt 'store' it for later.

Edit: And infer that I am incompetent if you want, but from anecdotes on this thread, PayPal and the HSE didn't get the memo either.

And if they start deleting them down the road there will be serious issues. Right now I'm a lot more annoyed by likely scams every bloody day than the amount of actual scam texts I used to get!

If they go ahead with blocking non-registered numbers in October it could be an absolute sh!storm. Hospital appointment reminders and notifications from DHL going missing.

Something Im unsure about, can I register my number as being from An Post or some other company? What vetting is done? It could be a scammers dream come true if you can easily register your number as being "Definitely not a scam". Meanwhile legit companies are getting blocked.

I'd assume some vetting must be done or less it's a completely futile exercise.

Be interesting if the scammers find a way to get get around it though,as they do.

I just looked at the form, it asks for the CRO number and a few other details. Thats public information, so anyone can look it up. It does ask for the business email address, so that might be a hoop your average Joe won't be able to jump through. However, it doesnt stop someone, who works at, say PayPal, to register PayPal.

I think the point of the DHL example is not that it will go missing. But, it was a scam text that should have been caught but won't go missing because it wasn't flagged.

And my point was, it looks like someone has already registered their scam number as DHL. What happens when the real DHL try to register their number? They wont be using the already registered email address, so wont be able to. From October, their legitimate texts will get blocked.

So far I've two hospital appointment texts, three flight change notifications and a OTP all marked as Likely Spam.

They really need to sort this out before even remotely considering blocking.

If they really think some random African Airline is going to have heard of this and register they're a bit naive

Google verification codes are still being flagged as Likely Scams, this is going to cause all kinds of chaos if these end up being blocked. You'd have imagined that Google would be on the ball with this one.

Clear Mobile’s MFA texts are also being flagged. I wonder if Vodafone proper is too?

Google are normally on the call, you'd have to think it's down to the shambolic way this was announced.

If they block the texts outright it'll be a disaster

Updated article from yesterday in the Indo. Confirmation also that registered senders are still being flagged as scam. You can see from the article that the focus in Comreg has been entirely on this registration database, but they don't seem to have a handle on the enforcement mechanisms . Four weeks on, they are still blaming the networks.

Also, the example on this thread of an actual scam text which should have been flagged is still unexplained as far as I am concerned. I think it's unlikely that a scammer has gone to the trouble of registering an ID belonging to someone else.

They really are going to have to delay the introduction of the full system until they're 100% sure that it's working properly.

I have had two DHL texts this week that all came through not marked as spam

a vet appointment came in as spam….

Over on askaboutmoney, there was a discussion this week about a text from AIB that was likely a scam text but it wasn't flagged.

The whole thing sounds like a sh*tshow

I simply added the dentist's mobile number in my contacts and his number as they ring you to confirm appointments.

The general point about non Irish numbers is that people are probably slightly more wary of those, so a bit less likely to be scammed by them.

This anti scam measure is not perfect, but I am sure that it helps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭gipi

Texts from my NI dentist don't display a mobile number, just the practice name, so I don't have a number to add to my contacts. If they phone me, it's from the landline (which is in my contacts).

Got first and only 'likely scam' message when changing my password on perx website. A verification code is required to complete the password change.
Actual scam message claiming to be dpd still coming unhindered from some +63 number.

I had similar: a text from an airline for a one time verification code marked as "likely scam" (although it came through).

I appreciate the intention, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

    really? https://www.askaboutmoney.com/threads/message-from-aib-they-have-placed-a-hold-on-my-account.241194/page-2

As somebody travelling at present, this system is unprofessional. A foreign text should not say "likely scam" which is ridiculous when it comes from a reputable source in the country in which I am located, it should say "Unclassified" which is in fact what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,534 ✭✭✭✭Alun

That's rather worrying. It's clear that whoever dreamed this scheme up, hasn't thought it through well enough.

Maybe I am doing osmething silly, but the problem I encountered the other week was we were previously sending SMS for a client via MailChimp, and it was fine. When this new system came in, we needed to do something to make it so we were a third party using MailChimp on behalf of our client. But MailChimp (A rather large company) are not registered as an Aggregate sender - so nothing can be done other than to find a completely new platform to work on. MailChimp support had zero clue what we were talking about when I raised it with them
