Anyone know if newspapers.com in the states ever has free weekends anymore? I've looked for over a year, but now can't access their facebook page.

They won't accept (non-renewable subscription) payment ways for their free 7 days trial, and they've restricted viewing of other people's clippings now too. I can usually decipher the words on their (often jumbled) "read text" consolation option, but pictures and images are fully blocked without a subscription (and they won't take my money).

I don't have a sub either, currently with Irish Newsp Archive. Have you tried a trial with the US using a different email?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,392 ✭✭✭✭Deja Boo

yes thanks Mick I did - apparently it's not the email, it's any disposable pay card they automatically refuse.

Stumbled on a piece about French surnames when looking for something totally unconnected!

It had some interesting data provided by a genealogist Odile somebody (couldn't find it again!). Surnames appeared in France in the tenth century mainly due to a big increase in the population.

32% are patronymic / the father's first name,

30% refer to the family’s location,

    20% are nicknames and

18% are related to the person's occupation ,

    Edit - found it https://www.ouest-france.fr/societe/famille/martin-petit-dubois-voici-le-top-10-des-noms-de-famille-les-plus-repandus-en-france-99d9c6a4-e87e-11ef-9a7b-e9dff01c2f19

Following the closure of the 'continuity' thread here I've made my views on contributing to Boards known over on the Business forum.

Well said Mick - sums it all up better than I could.

When first mooted I was all for throwing my money in the hat but the more I thought about it the more uncomfortable I felt about supporting a hapless campaign that doesn't appear to serve the best interests of the site.

3x AncestryDNA samples posted on the same day and marked as received at various times on the same day, a few days later

One is now through fully, tree linked and waiting for thrulines to generate

The other two are still just marked as received!

It will be interesting to see what they show. I’ve found Thrulines to be extremely misleading. Its hints for possible ancestors are based on the trees uploaded by your matches. In my line, an idiot decided to link two (obviously unrelated) individuals in the mid-1700s and that tree has been replicated / copied many times. As a result, I get the most outlandish Thrulines suggestions, and they are useless as research clues due to the absence of records in that era.

I know about Thrulines being based on others data - I have to ignore a very full tree presenting as being one of my great great grandfathers, due to knowing that Achill Islanders did not possess the powers of time travel or teleportation in the 1800s!

They accepted every hint going, for an extremely common name. He apparently died twice in two different continents - I'm not even confident enough to claim the Mayo burial is him. Ironically I know for a fact they lifted some of the info from me (attached public images I uploaded, dates I have from Scotlandspeople) to begin with, but then added in parents, marriages, non existent emigration etc from the first hints going.

But they can be useful pointers towards records that may not have turned up in searches, when you do get a competent one

The other two samples have now jumped up to Extracting, pretty much in lock step, so must just have ended up in another narch

Like any hint, they need to be validated, but I often find them accurate.

Well yes, accurate in the post-1900 period, where anyone with a bit of intelligence can easily find stuff. However, when you have a man being born in Oxfordshire in 1730 and taking a DeLorean to South Tipperary, having children there in the 1740s and being interred back in Ox., one has to wonder. Validation in Ireland pre-1800 generally is almost impossible from paper and it's very much pushing the envelope with DNA (>250yrs.).

Some of it is due to my own stupidity; about 30 yrs. ago I shared trees for three distinct male branches of my family with a distant US cousin, hoping his extensive research could help connect the three as brothers 1790 -1797. He asked another, who concluded they were brothers and it was splashed all over the internet. To make it worse he credits the research on the brothers' connection to me!

    Hi.

Apologies if I'm posting this on the wrong thread.

If anyone wants to get copies of English wills, then do so asap, as the price is increasing form £1.50 to £16.00 on 17th November. Details on this link:

It's been a while since I've renewed my Ancestry membership. Do they tend to have Black Friday deals for the 6 month / 12 month options?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 11,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hermy

Definitely not the wrong thread @Catsmeow - could even have had it's own thread.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I haven't seen much in the way of subscription offers for a while now - mostly it's just discounts on DNA kits.

Yes I agree about less deals about nowadays. I can remember regular 'free' weekends for Paddy's Day and other special days. I think they focus offers on former subscribers with direct emails. I have just finished up with a £5.99 a month for three months. Just remember to unsubscribe before deal ends so they dont catch you with credit card info and full renewal. I have unsubbed but can still have use to end of November, the last of my third month. This weekend has free access on Findmypast. I am registered on Lostcousins.com and there is a monthy newsletter sent out with good information eg the recent increase on will/probate charges.

I never heard of Lostcousins. I'll check that out, although I've had the wrong experience with living cousins before. I don't want my home to turn into a hotel! 😬

Hi again. Glad it was the correct thread.

For current Ancestry discounts, have a look at 'The Common Room' over on Rootschat, specifically the thread 'Does anyone know of any current Ancestry special offers?' Page 53 of the thread has links to the following offers, which have been going for a few years now:

Ancestry worldwide stg£89.99/ Ancestry UK & Ireland stg£59.99

Sorry, was unable to post the actual links.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭cobham

Hah Jellybaby…. yes beware of 'third cousins once removed'….. snap😐️

Lostcousins asks you to fill out direct relatives in 1881 UK census with the idea of matching up others who have the same data. Each census page would have a unique reference. I have UK ones but also managed to get Irish ones in somehow. I have never had any follow up from that but the newsletter can be interesting reading. There is a discussion forum as well. It is a one man operation and he gets some income from recommending things if people click thru from his site eg to Findmypast or Ancestry offers. There were some zoom things during covid and he has organised some holiday workshops in Portugal if I remember correctly but none in recent yrs. He is in his 70's now.

That link has worked for me in the past. Sometimes I needed to delete cookies or use a VPN, but I can confirm it does (can) work.

Peter is a law unto himself. I once asked him to include a mention something the IGRS was doing and he refused.

MyHeritage still does a lot of free weekends, etc but they don't have anything unique for Ireland and I really only use them for DNA work.

Irish Newspaper Archive usually does a Black Friday deal that is very good. I'll be doing a round-up for my own newsletter soon.

Irish Newspaper Archives are launching a new updated system this week, I was at a preview, looks very good. There might be special offers as part of this

Yep, I did some beta testing for them & agree it looks great.

Second of my three AncestryDNA tests finally came in, and the third is at Extracted so will probably be in later on today.

That second one was my mother, interesting to see there's a single match - only 10 cM - who is someone I can identifiably connect to my father's family. Also interesting to see Ancestry claim 1% Denmark on her fathers side, something I have no evidence of and assume is inaccurate!

Most very small percentages can be ignored, unless you can already document a connection to that location.

For example, I have 3% Wales in mine, but know that a great-great grandmother came from Pembrokeshire.
