Anyone know if newspapers.com in the states ever has free weekends anymore? I've looked for over a year, but now can't access their facebook page.

They won't accept (non-renewable subscription) payment ways for their free 7 days trial, and they've restricted viewing of other people's clippings now too. I can usually decipher the words on their (often jumbled) "read text" consolation option, but pictures and images are fully blocked without a subscription (and they won't take my money).

I don't have a sub either, currently with Irish Newsp Archive. Have you tried a trial with the US using a different email?

yes thanks Mick I did - apparently it's not the email, it's any disposable pay card they automatically refuse.

Stumbled on a piece about French surnames when looking for something totally unconnected!

It had some interesting data provided by a genealogist Odile somebody (couldn't find it again!). Surnames appeared in France in the tenth century mainly due to a big increase in the population.

32% are patronymic / the father's first name,

30% refer to the family’s location,

    20% are nicknames and

18% are related to the person's occupation ,

    Edit - found it https://www.ouest-france.fr/societe/famille/martin-petit-dubois-voici-le-top-10-des-noms-de-famille-les-plus-repandus-en-france-99d9c6a4-e87e-11ef-9a7b-e9dff01c2f19

Following the closure of the 'continuity' thread here I've made my views on contributing to Boards known over on the Business forum.

Well said Mick - sums it all up better than I could.

When first mooted I was all for throwing my money in the hat but the more I thought about it the more uncomfortable I felt about supporting a hapless campaign that doesn't appear to serve the best interests of the site.
