I would imagine that winds are often lighter if living in a valley. During high pressure weather in the winter, colder weather than midday other areas would be another thing and probably more instances of fog and quite likely some episodes of stubborn fog that fails to clear on a calm winter day.

We are very sheltered from northerly winds but can be over exposed to south westerlies. Storm Darragh during December last was a red warning for Wicklow and the wind was from the NW. The general area was well rattled, trees down all over the place, widespread power outages but here in the valley it had no impact at all. South Westerlies however get funneled down the valley and can make them worse. Fog can be an issue here, taking a long time to clear and in winter there have been times when smoke from the wood fires gets trapped and can't rise up. It has its weather quirks that's for sure.

a very much warmer week or 2 ahead temperatures generaly in the 21 to 25c range, maybe hotter in a few locations but for August this is very good!

things will probably dive south towards the end but I'm going to Spain second week of september so that will probably be warm as well, every time I go to Spain it's always warm in Ireland with an Azores high fingering in.

Tomorrow might see more than 2 hours sun here but still cloudy much of the time.

Actually cloudy out there now so a slow burner again. Maybe sun after lunch. So dull this Summer here. Warm yes but dull.

Cloudy yet again but patches of blue sky appearing. Rather pleasant. Hopefully get the lawns cut today.

Interesting to note that if the current August mean temp of 15.9C were the final value for Dublin Airport, 2025 would be the 3rd warmest summer on record here beaten by only 1983 and 1976.

1995 was let down in this area by a cooler June compared to many had but it was still 6th warmest.

Haven't looked at any other stations and see where they stand yet.

Gorgeous day in Galway. 4 Met stations showing 24C at 12 noon. Moore Park has 25C. Oak Park with 26C. Interesting to see how high we get.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Yesterday every Met E station recored a temp above 20º — which I'd imagine is quite rare, as even in really hot spells, a sea breeze or local mist and fog etc. keeps one or two of the coastal stations a few degrees cooler than everywhere else.

And today every station is above 20º already. So that's two in a row. Wednesday could make it three.

Sryan — how often does this occur? And what's the record number of days in a row for every station to be above 20º?

Astronomy Ireland is alerting everyone in Ireland to the peak activity of the best meteor shower of the summer, ‘The Perseids’.

Astronomer David Moore says people can expect to see “20 times more shooting stars tonight than a normal night”.

“There will be a bright Moon in the sky and this will drown out some of the faint meteors, but the most spectacular brighter ones will still be well seen so we are urging people to get the whole family out and watch this ‘celestial fireworks’ display provided by Mother Nature.”

Perseid meteors can appear anywhere in the sky but their paths point back to the constellation (star-pattern) Perseus, which is in the north-east as seen from Ireland each evening.

“It is best to stand with your back to the Moon and look half way up the sky” Moore said.

The breeze just dropped here in West Mayo and the temperature rocketed. I dont have an accurate reading but with the high humidity it felt incredibly warm, felt well above 26.

I'm walking east by the grand canal from naas road and towards the south circular. It's nice but there's a very noticeable cool breeze. Unfortunately I'm not in longford today where I'm told it's feeling very warm with barely a breath of wind and even that warm.

My attic office is unbearably warm, a very rare event in Salthill! Not a puff of wind either (rarer still).

    2pm

    Mount Dillon 27 degrees

    Oak Park 27 degrees

My station in Cobh peaked out at 25.7c just after midday. I'd believe it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,702 ✭✭✭highdef

Going by the weather models, I would say Mount Dillon will overtake Oak Park in a the next hour or two and is likely to be the warmest synoptic station today. Plus Mount Dillon tends to be a bit slow to warm up but usually peaks later in the afternoon in weather setups like we have at present.

I think that 25.9c on 28 September 1985 is an amazing temperature. Tipping 26c, 3 days from October, a week past the autumn equinox.

I dug up the Irish Independent forecast for that day, the max they forecast was 24c. Only a fistful of over 25c in 5 years show how poor those years were.

Oak Park at 28C (3pm report).

    A lot of 26s and 27s.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Calling it now, today and the next few weeks forecast have sealed the deal. Absolutely brilliant summer in Cork, I would happily take this any summer, couldn't ask for much more.
