I’ve seen mention on this thread of places that are good to stock up on wine near Cherbourg but can’t find the posts that might name them can anyone help out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭17togo

The wine and beer supermarket is on the outskirts of cherbourg, a Google search will get you directions. They've huge selection and allow you to taste test also. In the town itself there's Normandy wines, beside the Carrefour and mcdonalds, run by an English fella. Also very good but smaller.

Probably easier to stop in the first place on your way into cherbourg.

just a follow up on a post from when Stena announced their cutting of Rosslare-Cherbourg

Brittanny has just announced that they are increasing services to 7 days a week from Rosslare to Cherbourg including over the winter (for some of us, a reason to rejoice!) and it'll be using some almost brand new ferries over the winter that would otherwise be parked up.
    https://www.corkbeo.ie/news/local-news/brittany-ferries-start-daily-rosslare-32200124

The extra sailings arent yet in the system, just the normal 4x times per week, but prices over the winter are from just 156 or 158 for car / motorhome for one or 2 adults (yes, just €2 extra for the extra adult in winter) . They obviously are making their money from the freight transport over the winter and leisure travel is a bonus

What almost brand new ferries will they be using? I can't seem to see it anywhere. Depending on the vessels they put on, seems like a good move.

they mentioned in the press release that …

Galicia for example, one of five new ships that joined the Brittany Ferries fleet since 2020 will serve Rosslare-Cherbourg throughout the winter, rather than being tied up.

Pont-Aven, the company’s flagship, will also continue to sail during part of the winter period, after the company initially planned to lay her over.

    press release : https://brittanyferriesnewsroom.com/brittany-ferries-steps-in-on-rosslare-cherbourg-offering-more-sailings-and-greater-choice/

    Galicia : https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/ships/cruise-ferries/galicia/about

The Pont aven runs normally to Cork so will be interesting to see if thats where it operates to, despite Rosslare being the ro-ro freight hub

drove cherbourg to austria and back in June. the only place I saw that had emission control zone was regensburg in germany. so I was glad of crit air/tuv sticker on the car then ! ( I got them well in advance and it's such a small cost just got them for peice of mind)

also the n13 in france is toll free now but the website is easy enough to use

    sanef.com

in austria I just used the asfinag app

we were pretty rural campsites the rest of the time so didn't see anywhere else.

no problem with cards and fuel anywhere

In relation to the drive to Austria don't mind asking but how long did it take ? I was thinking about driving towards Black Forest/ Austria but going via Dunkirk with DFDS. They're poor for getting information back from in relation to schedules and prices so I wouldn't mind making the trek if it was feasible from Cherbourg. My wife doesn't drive so it will be left to me.

    Thanks.

we did cherbourg to verdun, verdun to regensburg and regensburg to eisernerz.

about 6-8 hours each day. could have probably driven longer each day but were on holiday !

1st day sunday didn't hit the campsite until 9pm off the ferry luckily that one had a bar and cafe so still had reception open. used toll roads as needed to be in austria by Thursday for the grand prix.

would have liked to have spent longer getting there but work meant that's the time we had.

we only generally use camping municipal in france.

we just Google mapped the route and then looked for places to stay near our route that might be interesting.

I have found this year that by stopping every 2.5 hours I can do a slightly longer day. In the past I would done 3.5 - 4 driving legs, but would be getting a bit spaced out come evening time. Each to their own, and perhaps I'm just older now and need to stop more often.

Also, going from Cherbourg, you'll be swapping some German autobahn for French autoroute. I found the autoroutes more relaxing and less tiring than the autobahns. But you do pay a price for that. Also if I remember correctly, the routes to Austria from France via southern Germany are less direct than going via Calais/Dunkirk and down through Germany.

Nothing confirmed about what ships they'll be using and probably wont be until the 7 day schedule is published in October. As for the Pont Aven it's often laid up during the winter so it may be used on Rosslare-Cherbourg if required. It definetly wont be sailing to Cork over the winter.

Any ideas what time Brittany Ferries will allow you to check in & board for the 23:59 Hours sailing from Rosslare to Bilbao, have a 1 year old & wouldn't mind having him settled ASAP. Any tips from the more experienced seafarers on here would be very much appreciated as we are first timers. TIA.

You can check in from 8.30 but you won't board until around 11. We had to wait around 30 mins for our cabin to be ready also which wasn't ideal as had young kids also. Not sure if that's a common occurrence and others did get their cabin straight away.

Depending on the numbers they normally kick off with the freight about 2230/2245 and again depending on numbers cars, camper vans , motorbikes etc could be from 23.00 onwards, and that then depends on what lane you're actually in also.

Mea Culpa, you were on about check in, sorry, approx 2 hrs before sailing they normally start lining them up following check in.

You're actually right, I meant boarding, was hoping to get on about 2 hours in advance of sailing & get settled in.

There used to be an option where some of your group (family) can board the ferry as a foot passenger while the remainder drive on in the car the usual way. Not sure if still the case

It’s not the speed limit that’s the problem as much as the way on the same road the speed limit can change so frequently with what appears to be little reason while google maps isnt always accurate to the road signs. When you’re on the wrong side and mirrors are different, the kids doing a royal rumble in the back it’s not always easy keep track of every speed sign.

We stopped in The Bosun in Monkstown. It opens around 12. Food was nice, and you can see the boat from the front door

We were here last year when it got to 40 but just for one of the days. Either side of it was 38.

For me, there’s a huge difference between the two. 40 meant staying inside, especially during the afternoon, with the clima on & reading, chatting, playing cards etc & not being outside. To me, it felt like I was breathing in hot air & I found it unpleasant. 38 while obviously still hot, is more manageable. Humidity is fairly low which helps. Currently, the weather app says it’s 34% here while at home it’s 75%. Generally, in my experience the high of 40 only lasts for an hour or so. Doesn’t mean it feels much cooler either side, especially in a tent but it is better.

@fits have plenty of cool, not cold water to drink, stay in the shade as much as you can. Maybe find some indoor things to do if it becomes unbearable so you can make use of the clima there. Go to a shopping centre, or an aquarium or even the cinema for an afternoon, if you can find a VO! Sometimes even a drive with the kids can help as the clima in the car can be welcome for an hour or so until the worst of it passes. Find out if there’s power for a fan or two in your accommodation. The mayor here in the village is opening up the meeting room in the town hall for vulnerable or older people for the hottest hours of the day so they can benefit from the clima. Maybe your couriers on site will have suggestions too that could help. Enjoy your trip!

Buy a cheap fan, a tent above 35C is no fun.

But morning shade is the holy grail of tenting for us and whether the peak daytime temp is 30C or 40C doesn't matter so much.

    That's true.

Thankfully for us someone had warned us about how strict it was before hand so we were extra vigilant of the speed limit while driving.

I will bring a fan as we will need to blow the hot air out of the tent when we get there in evening time It’s a safari tent.
