I'm almost certain it was the forward collision warning from this list of sounds. I don't think it sounded like lane departure.

That makes it sound like a nice calm warning. Maybe it was the shock of the moment but sounded louder and longer.

I wish I had thought of saving the incident on the dash cam.

Manual states this is always active. It's nothing to do with autopilot. You can disable it but you have to do it at the start of every journey.

It also states mistakes can happen. Dirty sensors, shadows, mistaken objects.

It could have been any or all of these.

I done it before in a closed car park. I drove towards someone messing, and the car start beeping and vibrating and automatically ground to a half with what felt like the abs kicking in so made it feel worse. Sometimes it can happen when parking in tight parking spots too. The car thinks your gonna hot the car in front!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭JOL1

Yes it could be any of these…you are a new driver with Tesla and it is likely that the car detected "something" that indicated a possible risk of collision and this may not have been noticed by yourself… Nobody can recreate the exact circumstances of what the cars cameras detected. Unless this is a recurring problem my own view would be that it is not sufficent to engage Tesla ….

Every situation is different…and comparisons are meaningless ..the car reacts to what it "sees" and I cant see any benefit in anecdotal comparisons as no two circumstances are the same

Mine is always screaming at me 🤣. Loud beeping, red light strip flashing, turns down the radio.

It just doesn't know what to do we the roads around my house. Very narrow, no lines, 60kmph speed limit, often the vegetation is over growing, so when a car approaches and it can't place the side of the road it panics a bit. I've never had it brake but nots of noise.

Yes I think this is most likely. I don't think I missed an actual hazard such as an animal or anything like that, but its certainly possible. I think it's more likely something to do with the terrain. It was a rural road with vegetation hanging out onto the road, tall grass swaying in the wind etc.

It's a pity I didnt think of recording the dashcam. I think if I looked back on it, it was probably something explanatory like that.

It does make me slightly uneasy if something like that were to happen with someone behind me. Especially with my daily location being rural, we get a lot boyos tearing around and driving up your ass. But I suppose that is not a tesla problem. Its a boy racer problem and lack of gardai enforcement problem.

But I guess this is not unique to Tesla and is a genral quirk of modern driving assist technology that is new to me.

I've had that forward collision avoidance experience too now that you brought it up - but interestingly only at low speeds - and have been quite thankful for it.

Having it happen at high speeds could be quite unsettling I can imagine.

have to say (and im sure this is old news to other tesla owners) but the efficiency of the Juniper is excellent, my etron 55 had a long term average of 27kwh / 100km, id guess it was 23 or so in summer give or take, usually seeing 13-14 in the Juniper at the moment.

Often overlooked in Tesla chats, they are so efficient. That’s similar to small hatchbacks like the Born or ID3 etc.

Is that for a Rwd juniper or AWD Cyrus?

    I'm also RWD LR.

It's amazing the freedom this gives you. I've been doing lots of long trips just because I can. I haven't had to charge to 100% yet and I haven't had to use a public charger.

Before with the diesel, every trip had to be justified.

15.1kwh/100km LTA for me. That's with plenty of long distance high-speed motorway miles. Probably would be closer to 14 dead if it was just used for suburban driving like so many are.

Taking the model y to France and will be driving in temperatures heading for 40C. Is the air conditioning going to have a massive effect on the range? ( thankfully heatwave is due to end the day after we get to our destination ). ETA it’s the older model y standard range.

Not in anyway that you would be scared. An extra kWh per 100km maybe. I had my AC/Auto on for 2 years.

The MYJ AWD is reportedly 386bhp, but I have also seen the launch edition touted at a lower 375bh. Anyone know what the acceleration boost adds, or for that matter, what it is without AB?

I was asked and while I know the AB knocks half a second off the 0-100 time, I couldn't answer the bhp question and didn't want to assume any parallels with the older model.

did you miss the bit where I said it would be 40 degrees?

No impact. The increased consumption for A/C will be more than offset by increased efficiency due to high temps.

If you have time, you should get a windscreen screen from basenor or similar to reflect the sun. Will make a big difference if you're using the car during the day.

40C would be fairly common, you need to get those numbers up :)

I don’t think the efficiency increases much beyond 25 degrees. Oh I’ll go ask chat gpt.

Quick answer: A Tesla Model Y will usually be more efficient at 25 °C than at 40 °C. Real-world studies show range losses that grow with temperature: small (~5%) around ~32 °C but much larger by 40 °C (around ~22% in some real-world analyses).

that’s fairly significant. I guess I’ll find out.

When we had the heat wave here a few years ago, it was around 34C I drove the 90mins from West Cork to Mahon point at normal speeds/limit and averaged 10kwh/100km 😄

Don't remember what it was on the M8 after that.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,049 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

That’s exactly why I said turn it on and forget. Pretty stupid to have a car with tech and creature comforts and be afraid to use them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,244 ✭✭✭✭fits

you are picking me up wrong. I have an ev for over four years now and have never not used AC. I was simply curious about how exceptional heat would affect the range when I am doing a 700 km drive. And the answer is quite a bit as it turns out. If the range drop is 20% it could necessitate 4 charging stops instead of 3.

Maybe LFP is affected differently than NMC but there's been no discernible difference for me between overall efficiency at 20C, 30C or 40C. Perhaps there is a difference, but not something I'd be aware of. If you stick mainly to SuCs like we do, and 40C is less efficient, then it will mean that the car charges a couple of percent more at each stop. Very unlikely that your entire charging strategy will be changed.

Bon voyage and let us know how you get on.

I’ll put in the full AI answer in case it’s of interest.

Concrete numbers (example using the Long-Range EPA figure 327 miles):

    1. Baseline at ~25 °C ≈ EPA-rated 327 miles (we’ll treat that as the reference).
    2. Small-heat case (≈32 °C / 90 °F): studies and fleet data often find ~5% range loss.
      • 327 × 0.05 = 16.35 miles lost.
      • 327 − 16.35 = 310.65 ≈ 311 miles remaining.
    3. Hot case (40 °C): recent analyses report about 22% range reduction vs ~23 °C in real-world data.
      • 327 × 0.22 = 71.94 miles lost.
      • 327 − 71.94 = 255.06 ≈ 255 miles remaining.

So, for the same driving route and speed, expect roughly 16–72 miles less range at high summer temps compared with ~25 °C — more commonly in the ~10–25% range depending on AC use, speed, wheel size and driving style.

Why the drop gets worse at higher temps

    • More power goes to active cooling (battery, inverters, cabin A/C).
    • Battery internal resistance and battery management constraints (thermal limits) can increase net energy consumption.

You won’t need 4 charges instead of 3.
3 charges on the LFP MY = 900km

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,338 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Having AC on will impact the range, just not sure if it will be a significant risk. Or more just something to keep in mind when planning the stop to charge.

If you go into the energy app in the car it will usually show you. I've done a 30 km trip with AC today and it says it used 0.7km of range. I drove home with the window down and it was free 😂

but the open window increased your battery consumption as you lost drag…..
