Well that's another year wasted to look forward to!

If he didn't stay it would be 3 Connaught clubs looking for a manager. Best of a bad lot. Although getting knocked out by Meath was ridiculous, they are a very limited team. Hard come back from it I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Avon8

Who would you be proposing as his replacement, out of what's currently available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I don't really know tbh, but, I know that PJ is certainly not getting the best out of what's available to him. A new voice is definitely required, it's not as if PJ had a wealth of managerial experience when he got the job, he got it on the strength of his name and popularity from his playing days.

I think its easy to say he's not getting the best of them, and i'm a bit surprised by people saying the last two years have been wasted years, in winning Connacht's, staying comfortably in D1 and making a final

Compare that to Donegal for example. They are at least the equal of us squad wise, certainly when you consider Galway's injuries the past two years. They have a manager regarded as a messiah. Any yet their past two years is virtually identical, a couple of provincials and a lost final. Indeed PJ (or his subordinates) definitely got the best of the one meeting between the teams

Only one team can win it the big one, I don't think it makes every other teams years failures.

Anyway, where I was going with the original question is that the prospective list of available managers is about as mediocre as they come at present. Mayo's current short list is the opposite of exciting and if anything a potential Galway shortlist would be worse again, there's very few big name ex players doing anything noteworthy

If there was a good potential replacement out there i'd be happy enough to move on to someone else but I can't see one. At least with Joyce you get a few things guaranteed, such as the vast majority of players actually want to play for the county (certainly not always the case with Galway), and he's learned how to shelve his ego and delegate to a good coach. He showed that by handing the tactical reins to Cian O'Neill, a move that looks very good in hindsight and it wasn't PJ's fault he left to Kerry. Rumours of Paddy Tally coming on board would be very welcome, given that 2025 was a year of defensive woes far more than attacking ones

I would't agree with that, there's far more talent available to PJ than in Donegal, I would say Donegal are getting close to the max out of what's available, they looked poor against Kerry, but the new rules suit Kerry perfectly and Kerry would have made Galway look much worse. We have regressed since we played Kerry in the final a few years ago, despite having a deeper squad now, plus the style of play is putrid. The reason most would say the last 2 years have been wasted is that we lost an AI final against one of the poorest teams in history to win an All Ireland, we will not get a better chance again. This year going out to an average Meath was shocking and forget about Meath beating Kerry, that was all part of Kerry's plan, they deny that now of course!

I want a manger to get the best out of what's available, the current setup haven't got that over the last 3 years, we make heavy work of beating teams we should be beating much easier, this has consequences down the line. I'm not expecting an All Ireland regardless who's in charge as I think that window has closed for this team, but, I don't want to see displays like this year where we are labouring badly to win matches and losing to average teams like Meath. We should have done to Meath what Donegal did to them!

People keep mentioning the final as a negative point for management and yet they get no credit for actually getting there. Lest we forget Galway were 5/1 underdogs and injury ridden when they upset the Dubs, who were odds on for the all Ireland at that point. They seem to get no credit for that win or the semi thereafter. Even in the final, they technically gave the players ample opportunity to go and win the game comfortably only for the players themselves to make shocking mistakes shooting, a free taker off injured after minutes and a goalkeeper cock up for the goal

Can't see how Galway's style of play was putrid this year either. The Armagh, Dublin, Down and Derry games were all absolute classics. If anything we were the great entertainers of the summer. Give me back some of the steadier stuff from 2 years ago and a defense that's not wide open if anything

Very few neutrals would say we have far more talent than Donegal btw. The consensus before the final was that they had a stronger squad than Kerry

Dublin were on the decline, that's quite clear in hindsight, but, I would still give Galway credit for beating them, same for beating Donegal, but, the final was absolutely shocking, and the management were hugely at fault for that display.

Had Galway actually beaten Dublin this year, they would have made life a lot easier for themselves! Donegal hadn't Murphy last year, he makes a huge difference to that team. Ulster teams tend to be rated as stronger than they actually are, up until the quarter final, Armagh were strong favourites to retain the title, but, after Kerry destroyed them, they were being called a very limited team.

The media were just waiting for Kerry to fail again against an Ulster team, so built up Donegal, so they ( the media) could say I told you so ( if Donegal had won), this opinion was then revised after the final, suddenly Kerry were outstanding and Donegal were shocking. There's a lot of group think in the media which changes overnight to suit whatever narrative they want to spin.

Back to Galway, the display against Meath was putrid, as bad as against Armagh last year, but, what made it worse is that Meath are a young inexperienced team at this level and really not a team Galway should be losing to. The games against Derry and Down while entertaining were littered with bad mistakes and poor play, both teams not serious contenders, Derry didn't win a match all year, yet we robbed them, Down are a division 2 team. Teams that should really have deen dispatched with much less fuss, caused us huge hassle which came back to bite us down the line.

Fair play to the girls, great display, left absolutely everything on the pitch and thoroughly deserved the win, heart stopping stuff at the end. A great example for our other teams to follow!

Was a great win alright but Christ they fell over the line. They played superbly in the first half and got stuck into Cork and fair play they took their goal chance. Played terribly in the second half, kept fouling to let Cork push up the field and then played terrible ball into the forwards. But when it went level in injury time they tore into Cork again and earned the win. Outstanding free from their captain considering the position and the fact they'd just blown a big lead.

The disrespect shown to the Galway team over the last few days was nothing short of disgraceful, they were written off by many commentators who were suggesting all Cork had to do was show up and take the cup.

    Cork are sore losers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,812 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

Galway teams were accused of having little bottle in recent years, perhaps rightly so. The finish in injury time was impressive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭threeball

A great win. Superb performances from Aoife Donoghue and Ciara Hickey at 6 and Higgins at 4. Head and shoulders above everything else on the pitch in either team.

Did it the hard way but the ref wasn't doing them any favours, heading down the stretch. Cork got a lot of favourable calls and losing Hickey gave Cork a window back in to the game.

Gutted it out unlike most Galway teams and they'll take huge satisfaction in thst.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,384 ✭✭✭Seadin

The ref gave ye everything. He is one of the worst refs I have ever seen reffing a game. Some very bad dirty tackles by Galway not punished. Ye won the game but the ref helped them hugely along the way and gave Galway a last minute free to seal the game. If that last free Galway got was a foul, how come similar fouls done to Cork players werent acted on accordingly? No consistency at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,717 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Here Is the fella who told me to get out of the Cork thread but now you come on here crying about the ref.

    Sore losers.

Isn't it great to see the arrogance blow up in their face twice in a matter of weeks. At least their ladies came out for the second half...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,384 ✭✭✭Seadin

Because what you are saying it's absolutely ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I agree the ref was terrible, but, for both teams and he definitely favoured Cork in the second half, was the main reason Cork got back into the match, giving Cork soft frees, while not giving Galway anything. Cork manager very bitter loser, his comments were very poor, gave Galway very little credit, despite being the better team for most of the match, even complained about the sending off 🙄, which was as clear cut as you get. Obviously thought his Cork team only had to show up and frustrated that Galway harried them all day. He wasn't complaining last year when he benefited from a goal that shouldn't have stood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭h2005

Yes it seemed the ref was trying to even things up after the sending off, some blatant calls missed. Ref did miss a push that we scored off though so maybe it was just a poor performance really.

Lookit….. Heres what happened… Galway went out to give everything …and did… ref let a lot go on both sides.

Galway almost blew it with wide shots in the second half but held on to deservedly win.

Cork couldn't really handle Galways game style of harrying and putting pressure on those with the ball.

Did not let Cork work the 'we'll do it for the player sent off' tactic.

Thats about it folks…. great game.

If only our hurlers had a fraction of the heart and guts showed by the camoige players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I think both our camoige and women's football teams are putting their male counterparts to shame in this department. Both teams left everything on the pitch, the camoige team got their reward, while the footballers were unlucky against Dublin, it wasn't for lack of effort and heart that they lost out. The girls are setting the standard, hopefully the boys will catch up!

ye got beat the ref was shite for both teams. Take yer bating and be a bit gracious about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭cosatron

I rate murray very highly and i think Paul Bellew should move heaven and earth to get him to manage the u-20s.Look how motivated and well coached the girls were yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,812 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

Exactly what I thought. The ladies showed much more fight & composure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 821 ✭✭✭Krazy gang

In fairness I can see why cork have grievances. Clear push in the back on the keeper. Hard to see how that was let go

Exactly. Rules are rules either apply them consistently or don't ref at this level. That referee was an absolute disgrace and one of the main reasons why Cork didn't win. Galway played well i must admit but referee played a huge part for them too it cannot be just ignored.
