The thank function is utterly pointless on boards. There is no organisation to replies and ways to easily follow the different sub-conversations

Sounds like Reddit would be more your thing, tbh

Seems like some committed members are doing the the hard work or trying to convince people to subscribe.

The silence from the Boards Management , their employee and Mods is deafening.

Kinda show the downfall of the site from how it was run in the 00s to 2025.

The silence from the Boards Management , their employee and Mods is deafening.

    Is it?

Both the owner and employee were on here in the last few days answering questions.

FYI, I'm also having the issue that if you get a full screen ad when you click into a thread it throws you right to the end of the thread, not to the oldest unread. Happened on this thread, had 12 unread posts, clicked in, got the same temu full screen ad again (it's every 2 or 3 clicks on mobile) and it shot me to the end of the thread, so I had to skip back a page to read what I missed.

This will do nothing to encourage anybody new to join boards. Is there a plan for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

If I got a message in the forums I most interact with discussing the future I'd be happy to see it and would engage.

If I got unsolicited PMs I'd be telling people to gtfo.

You said earlier that you'd like to sub but don't want to give card details, that's fair enough.

Other's have suggested a PayPal donation or disposable Revolut cards, neither would give Stripe or Boards your card details and you're rejecting these ideas.

It seems you don't want to sub or donate.

well this is plan ! Did you not read Mike’s earlier post - it’s basically punishment for not subbing ….

One drawback with this subscription model is that it is turning into a "us and them" setup which is already evident in this thread.

Very much being pushed by those who are taking glee in the idea of boards failing.

    They are very very obvious

Feels like a microcosm of the way society is currently fracturing and dumbing down. People actively trying to help , people talking about it as the ship sinks and teenagers chugging beers and revelling in the demise.

I mean of course there is a divide on here, how could there not be ?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

So the obvious fix would have been to try to grow the userbase of boards. Instead it'll just get smaller and more tightly wound up meaning more will be asked of the same people again and again.

How is that even remotely sustainable? I feel like a transition year mini company could do a better job with the business decisions…

Oh and another question for @Boards.ie: Mike or @Boards.ie: Odhran - the site https://keepboardsalive.com/ was set up to track progress towards the goal of increased funding from subscribers. But at the same time the level of ads has grown too - including the obnoxious full screen ads. Why isn't that being included here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭Mr Disco

the more I think about it seems like an attempt at building a little redundancy pot….

You really need to fix the HTML Title tag on that page! @Boards.ie: Mike @Boards.ie: Odhran

This is the reason I wouldn't want "Paid Member" written on my profile. That said I haven't subscribed but as I've said before I have credit doing nothing on a mobile phone doing nothing. The reason I won't make much of an effort to subscribe is because I waste so much time here and I do mean waste. The site for me is a mixed blessing.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Again you lumping all non subscribers into the one basket. There maybe people that want it to fail, a small few I'd say, but there are plenty that have many other reasons and it feels like we are been lectured, by owners (when they turn up, there was a gap of 9 days last week) Mods and paid members.

As I said yesterday messages are read by all regardless who you intended them for, and most are very generalised

We now have full page ads, and told take it or leave it from owners

We are told we are just moaners when genuine questions asked, and will use any excuse not to sub anyway

Any advice given is met with, why don't you do it yourself so

And even the owner saying "it doesn't matter what I say", well maybe that's true to some, but at least try and put a bit of effort in.

We are not all on the 'let it fail' side, there are plenty on the fence ATM

To add to this - I do not want Boards to fail. I have been here since 2006 I think and it's been great. But I am not in the mood to support a half-hearted effort from the owner when he has not shown anything at all that would suggest there's any plan at all to improve the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭Neowise

Out of the 632 subscribers, only 8 subscribers joined in 2025, and 7 of them joined since 9th July, the date this thread started.
I don't think you are doing enough to encourage new users.
I don't think you are doing anything to encourage new users.
You are actively making changes that would discourage new users from reading the site, never mind signing up, and never mind subscribing.

    edit:

oh, my search was not right, as the calendar box to set the date was not displayed inside the browser window, so i set it incorrectly (due to buggy site), there were two more subs who joined this year in early jan, so, 10 who joined in 2025, and 7 of them joined since 9th July, the date this thread started.all the rest is correct.

Boards won't have access to them, a 3rd party independent payment processing site will be processing your payment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,092 ✭✭✭gameoverdude

    Again, sounds like effort.

    They aren't solutions.

I love boards, but I don't trust them with my financial details. Nor stripe.

I'll figure out revolut just to be contrarion prick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,092 ✭✭✭gameoverdude

So your saying boards will have no access to any extra personal details if requested?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

How do you pay for anything online?

It's as much effort using your actual Revolut card as using a disposable one.

You just seem like you really don't want to subscribe, which is your prerogative, but there's no point pretending that you do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,066 ✭✭✭ForestFire

The genuine concern was raised multiple times by other users.

You name and address maybe sent to the receiving party, which is fine buying cheap shower gel and projectors from Amazon.

But some people don't want there posts and full post history associated with their name and address, if boards receive them, even if unintentionally

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

You can put in any address, the payment will still go through.

As for name well they already have that along with your email from when you registered. People believe that there is this rare complete and total anonymity on Boards, not the case at all.

Also never got the whole need for anonymity, I've never posted anything on here that I wouldn't be ok with saying out loud. My actual name was my username for years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,294 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Boards.ie has no visibility on your credit card number

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭Neowise

Just because you don't understand peoples rights to privacy does not mean they do not have those rights.

Boards does not have my name or address. Just because you gave them your name and address, does not mean others gave up their privacy rights so willy nilly.

feel free to send me an email at mayisa5676@cotasen.com
I will be monitoring that email address for the next 20 minutes, then I'll discard it.

Just because you have never heard of disposable email addresses, does not mean others don't know what they are and actively use them to protect their privacy online. https://temp-mail.org/en/

While, as an end user, i do trust stripe, as they have PCI DSS Level 1 compliance, i can understand the other users concerns, as they found a statement that boards can request info from stripe, and they explained that concern to you, but you ignored it and went on about how you don't care about your privacy, so why should anybody.

It's people who are concerned about privacy that help protect the ignorant, as everything the privacy minded person strives for, helps everybody else out, even if they didn't even know their rights would have been trampled over if other well minded folks didn't already make the internet a lot safer for them, without them even having to think about it.

I wonder how many people have signed up to pay money because of the ads that have taken over and engulfed the site versus how many people have been completely put off and left the site to go elsewhere.

As for why people aren't paying, like anything, if you're not getting enough value from a service (for various reasons, many of which have been mention here) then products/services don't sell.

I would like to address the issues of my "negative" commentary. Like all text it all depends on how the words you post are interpreted. I am here in the background day and night trying to find fixes to issues and hunting for ways to get this site back on track and above the waterline. I do not appreciate people questioning my dedication to this site or how I frame a statement. What I said was if you find the ads are disruptive to your use of the site a great way to improve your experience is to subscribe and go ad free. This solution works in everyone's favour. That's it, nothing negative, no backhanded digs thrown in anyone's direction. Some people will turn the words others use upside down and inside out but what I said was very straight forward and fair I think.

As of right now the only way to gain revenue in a model like this is through Ad revenue or Subscriptions. I think it has been fairly well explained why Ad revenue is no longer a viable option That is the main reason why there are more ads placed on the site. The internet and the world in general has changed an awful lot since Boards.ie came online, we are not the only place struggling to keep the lights on.

Subscriptions are going well. Still climbing! Thank you to everyone who has subscribed, donated and offered their support and encouraging words. Thank you to everyone who has engaged in these threads and offered opinions and suggestions. As always just because myself or Odhran are not posting every hour we are reading and we are listening and we are trying.

    Thanks everyone, Mike.
