Kitchen Island spacing

Hi, I'm hoping to get some advice on whether there is room for an island in our family's kitchen design. Semi d house.

The plan is to knock the dividing wall wall between our dining room and kitchen and a small extension to take in our patio. This will square off the space and give us a 6 metre long by 5.2 metre wide space to place with give or take 100mm for new insulation on the external wall behind the new kitchen units.

I'm wondering if it's too tight to have an island parallel with the units and then dining table. So say 60cm units, 1.1 metre gap to island, 1 metre wide island would be 2.7 metres. Would our 90cm wide dining table be too cramped in the remaining 2.5 metre space? If we had the table fairly close to the wall with just room for a bench, the space between the island and the table and chairs would be about 90cm. Im thinking it might be too tight even without stools at the island . Could get a narrower island if needs be. Length of the island would be about 2.5m. Room would have large sliding door out to the garden and a single wall of cabinets.

Alternative might be to not do the big sliding door at the back and have a peninsula from the back wall parallel to the main run of units running for about 2.5 m. Doing it this way would maybe give us more space for the dining table perpendicular to the units.

    Thanks in advance

We wanted an island with minimal clear space around it. The kitchen designer suggested a mobile island and it has been brilliant - we can move it out of the way when not needed or wheel it back when wanted. Our size is 1200 x600 so not massive and easy to move. Although we have brakes on the casters, we never use them. Just make sure you don't give it a big knock with delicate items on top!

Ideal spacing around a kitchen island is at least 36 inches, but 42–48 inches is better if you have multiple cooks or high traffic. Make sure appliance doors and drawers can open fully. It really improves flow and usability!

    What he said.

We got the same advice from our kitchen designer.

An absolute minimum of a meter and more at the cooker or sink side where you are more likely to have people working together.

I would tend to agree about the space requirements and that is why my designer suggested the mobile island. It can be moved around at will to suit the circumstances of the time and has never been a problem. There is more than 1m clearance to the oven at all times, and room to get at the fridge opposite at the same time in a U shaped kitchen. I wouldn't change anything now after nearly 1 year's use.
