We've heard it all before. Just play better.

The maths doesn’t really work out like that. Hojlund book value would be down to around £40m now so factoring in his wages probably breaking even.

I do agree though midfield is desperately in need of legs. That said, midfield has a few maybes - maybe Mainoo can adapt, maybe Ugarte can become a solid starter, maybe with a higher defensive line and few games Casemiro can be effective.

Theres no ‘maybe’ anymore with Hojlund. He’s had two years and shown absolutely nothing. Amorim clearly detests him and can’t blame him.

I’d be hopeful we’ll sell off a few later in the window and find a CM in the £30m-£40m price range.

I wasn't taking a shot just saying I find the promising to bid vs. actually bidding was odd is all.

That's a very simplistic black and white view. I understand the sentiment but things generally have more nuance than that.

Most of the things he said, we haven’t heard before. In fact what we did hear before was that it’s going to get worse before it gets better. The better does need to start now though. There can’t be anymore excuses.

He knows we need to play better. He knows it’s a results business and he knows his credit has mostly been used up last season but he feels the support - from those above him and from the fans. The players who went on tour are likely all with him too. That should drive him and the team on. Those who don’t meet the requirements have been separated from the group. Two new signings in attack who have proven they can do it in the Premier League with another attacker likely to follow. No European football should mean that we are better prepared for league games and could also mean another successful cup run.

He also spoke about Mainoo, who could have a completely different season this time around:

“Mainoo, with those feet, playing the ball, if he finds the right pace, playing like every time I give the ball, I find a new solution. Every time the guy is running back, I can follow the guy because he can. He’s going to be faster.” - he is working with him and whilst we may need a new midfielder, he might feel like a new one if all goes to plan.

There will be some fans here waiting in the wings to say they were right if he doesn’t improve things, that’s quite sad. I’m fully behind him and hope with everything I have that he gets it right and stays with us for a very long time.

I'd agree with you. Even tho we have heard similar before we have not actually seen it put into action. Ten hag was brought in and didn't have the nerve to implement his system and ideas he bottled it after two bad games, yes he won trophies but so did other managers by just plastering over the cracks.

Amorim has explained alot of what he is doing and what he wants to do and you can see changes in the players, the most important test will come when they are under pressure in the Premier league and until then we won't know for sure.

Some people just want to keep dumping on everything he says and even if we start winning the same people will either still complain about X player not being used or they will just post after any "bad" result.

Thanks for understanding the sentiment. I just don't have the patience for these PR exercises.

We have Everton tonight & Fiorentina next Saturday before the season kicks off. I expect we'll get a good picture for the X1 he's going to start the season with in these 2 games (injuries aside). I'd expect Mbuemo to start tonight.

Very interesting piece in The Athletic, thanks for the heads up.

His comments about Maz and the leadership group are interesting too. It really seems like that Maz was a great signing for the money.

He says a few times he needs to be "less romantic". My reading of that is to be a bit more pragmatic at times and a bit less idealistic, which I think shows massive growth from him.

Feeling optimistic about the season ahead. Sure, otherwise what's the point? :D :D

If ever you doubt the old meme from Batman:

Just come in here any day of the week and you'll find misery magnets just dying for the club to struggle and Amorim to be sacked.

Hope so. I'm bringing my kids to Fiorentina match. It's at 12:45. Players usually arrive 4 hours before apparently so I'll be at old Trafford at 08:30 that morning lol

I'm sure it'll be a great day out and maybe even get to see the unveiling of Sesko 😀

And some people just gulp down any old sh*te and are like little lapdogs every summer wagging their tails and full of optimism without any sense of logic at all.

Have you been supporting United for a while, yeah?

I know which one I'd rather be.

Anyway looking forward to catching the game tonight. Hopefully we see Bruno, Cunha and Big Bry on the field together building some chemistry.

Logic has been given to you. If you don’t agree or feel it isn’t enough to be optimistic, make a counter argument instead of moaning and adding nothing to the discussion.

I think the vast majority are somewhere in between tbh.

I just read the summary kindly provided by FFR rather than the full interview, but (again) Amorim comes across really well. He does a super interview. No BS, no false platitudes, common sense explanations, he comes across as a great guy, but also while (so far) he has totally hid it in public, he clearly has the hard edge that is required.

I get that he needs to start delivering. I think he knows that too.

Maybe I'm being naive but I don't believe he's doing this as a PR exercise, I think he genuinely believes what he's saying.

all talk though , the results have been terrible so far to be fair

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,255 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Yeah, but that’s because he has a load of crap players to deal with. I think people who say ETH got better results with the exact same players can’t be genuine. The attitude change he is trying to bring in plus Mbeumo and Cunha will make a world of a difference. Still a huge amount of mediocrity in the team and his hardest job now (post bomb squad) will be sorting out Bruno’s role. I’d play him 9, with a lot of interchange with the two aforementioned 10s (although selling him for a bucketload of cash would be better). Amorim will probably come up with something but can’t afford for Bruno to be bluearseflying it.

The game is on Sky Sports tonight from 9 (which was news to me, I assumed these would be exclusive to MUTV).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭Xander10

All the games have been on Sky Sports , watching west Ham v Bournemouth at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,953 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

It's a Premier League affiliated tournament so presumably that's why Sky have access.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,237 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I read we made 7.5m from the tournament, not too shabby while also gaining fitness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

Mbeumo starting apparently. Looking forward to seeing him.

    Cunha up front?

Very interesting lineup. This confirms that RA won't be afraid to play 1 of Cunha or Mbuemo up top when he deems necessary. Big game relatively speaking for Mainoo and Ugarte in Centre Mid too.
