A striker has to be the priority, I think. You can't win anything without goals. And there's very little goals in this team. As bad as last season was, a proper in form striker in the squad would have got us a good bit further up the table, and maybe even a trophy.

That said, they shouldn't overpay for Sesko. His numbers aren't spectacular. I don't think it says a whole lot about his motivations if he decides to go to Newcastle, over being the main man up front for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Waiting 2 months to declare our interest in another striker after Delap turned us down, and going full-on press briefing with that interest, may not have been the wisest move.

Yup I'd rather us spend big on a midfielder and if they want to spend big on a CF would prefer Watkins over Sesko.

There's been a big gapping hole in the middle of midfield that's needed addressing now for God knows how long. The way Amorim wants his WBs to play like wingers and with Bruno in midfield who ever partners him has even more work to get through this season.

The frivolous spending of money over the last 12 years has really bitten us hard in the arse.

I don't know about Hojlund being able to do the same job as Sesko and think we still need a CF even if it was a loan because we can't go into the season with only Zirkzee and Chido as backup to Hojlund.

But 100% I agree our main priority should be finally fixing the issue in midfield. Especially if Amad is going to be starting RWB he's going to be playing like a winger. We need to add another player whose got the same engine and workrate as Ugarte but a better ball player.

We can't be relying on Casemiro who hasn't got the legs anymore especially with the increased workrate on whoever partners Bruno and has to cover defensively for the WBs.

BS is reportedly on around £100k a week, presumably we'd offer him in the region of £200k a week plus performance related bonuses. Newcastles current highest earner is seemingly Bruno G at around £160k a week and Isak declined an offer of £200k per week with them. They will have to smash their wage structure to sign him which would likely cause a big ripple effect on their best players. Once we actually match Newcastles bid I'd be confident he'll pick us.

Yeah I'd take anything regarding wages of the top players at Newcastle with a pinch of salt given how other state run clubs operate.

If United do get him, I would hope its not 200k per week. Most including bonus would be 150k, then if he proves to be a superstar a new deal with a higher wage plus bonus.

Could do with CM and goalkeeper as much as anything.

2md of August and we seem spend age trying get players in.

In saying that I finally think last 2 summers see us moving in right direction. Its slow but finally starting to settle down with spending and being little more sensible. Be nice get rid of 2 or 3 more deadwood before end month.

Sesko not in the squad for Leipzig's friendly today. I definitely think this will be wrapped early next week, one way or the other.

If Sesko wants us he joins us, if he wants money he joins Newcastle.

Newcastle can give a Saudi special contract that we can't match but hes not gunna be on the poverty line if he takes what we are offering. Leipzig showed their hand re. Price. So its whether Sesko wants us or not.

son leaving spurs. leaves them short a left winger. i dont think frank would have much interest in garnacho though

Good from our point of view that Newcastle have a bid in. It'll push things along quickly and force us to wither match it or pull out you'd imagine.

We need a good spine for the squad

    GK

    CM

    CF

if Carlsberg were our sponsors .....

Well if they buy someone from another team, that team will need a left winger.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

The PL season starts in 2 weeks and we haven't addressed the 3 biggest problems, striker, midfield and goalkeeper. We also haven't gotten rid of the malcontents.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'd be lying if I said I much cared about the transfers though. If nothing else happens I still want to see performances from that squad. If Ten Hag could do it...

We have bought CMs of course but its been years since we really have really worked hard on getting proper CM especially a 6. We go for world class players all over pitch but CM position just seems slip by season after season.

We might by one but always short of another.

I'm still fairly optimistic on the Sesko deal.

To be clear I did think that Watkins was the safer bet, if a sensible price could be reached but if the club have decided in Sesko, so be it.

When I heard that Newcastle had made an official bid, my first thought was that Sesko must have been swayed by their contract offer and it would soon be done.

But it seems more the case that both clubs have made offers to the player, United are waiting for his decision before they make a bid whereas Newcastle, feeling the pressure from the Isak situation, are trying to force the issue by meeting the asking price.

So I think it's still up in the air and entirely down to the player. If he decides over the weekend, as many have reported he will, then it'll be wrapped up sharpish.

And whilst I don't think Newcastle making an official bid is as significant as first thought, the opposite goes for us. If we bid, it'll be because Sesko has said yes.

Love to hear this. If there's one good thing Jadon Sancho has ever done for United, it's bringing about this philosophy.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment but malconent 1 has gone to Barca, malconent 2, another club literally paid £5m NOT to sign him and malconent 3 nobody has shown any interest in. How do you suggest the club move them on?

Reputable sources are saying we are actively looking at keepers.

The manager himself literally said midfield was an issue.

I know it would be nice to wave a magic wand and have all the incomings and outgoings we desire but unfortunately, magic wands haven't existed at United since Scholes retired.

The Newcastle bid isn’t enough for Leipzig, according to Ornstein. United might wait to see what the price is before bidding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,847 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Newcastle getting absolutely rinsed this summer. Great to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Wouldn't be surprised if it's the sell on clause that saw the bid rejected. €80M should be enough with a sell clause included.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,566 ✭✭✭Ninthlife

Romano said last week Sesko has an agreement with Leipzig that if certain special clubs bid he can leave for a reasonable fee...

If United are one of those special clubs may not need to match Newcastles bid

Yeah it’s supposedly this: “When he signed that new deal, it came with the understanding that if an elite club — by his definition — offered in the region of €80m-€90m (£69m to £78m), Leipzig would allow him to leave.”

It could be that they’re just holding out for the sell on clause, that’s what Ornstein is suggesting tonight anyway.

Newcastle are probably, or will be if Isak goes, in a better position to offer the funds up front so even if United match it but try to pay over 4 years or whatever, Leipzig might not accept it. Sesko may also be okay with going to Newcastle in that scenario too.
