Or they have let bygones be bygones and done what is best for the Left.
Takes strength to let bygones be bygones.

I don't think they are after your or your likes vote or affirmation funnily enough.

Well they wouldn't be getting it obviously.

But I am entitled to a view on the politics of it, and the reportage is that some senior figures are very unhappy with the decision. And that won't easily be dismissed. Especially if they end up being painted with some of the same positions that will inevitably derail the Connolly campaign.

Ah when bereft of any substance reach for the tired, lazy clichés. The 'West' have rarely had any issue with totalitarian agression, only when it's a threat to their interests - democracy and human rights are convenient flags to wave when it suits and ignored when it doesn't. It's bizarre that 'people actually fall for' any idea of Western's Imperialism's benovalence on the aforementioned principles.

The Labour Part stopped being a serious party decades ago, Bacik is awful but their decision to support Connolly is absolutely correct and the first good thing they've done in years, of course it will be critiqued by sections of the media - (clowns like Stephen Collins are probably seething 🤣) and the south Dublin 'rugby centrist dads' but so be it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

There won't be a candidate going forward with the support of a whole party. Of course there will be those who think it is the wrong choice.
When 'reportage' names senior figures then there maybe something to comment on. If those figures are not willing to be named then you can take it they do not wish to cause a rift. Happens everywhere.
    You are catastrophising.

Catastrophising is a cognitive distortion where individuals magnify negative events or situations, expecting the worst possible outcome, even when it's unlikely

This strikes me as the take of somebody who would never vote for Labour anyway.

I'm a Labour voter, makes sense to me. There was no better candidate available, Connolly is of a similar mindset to Labour so seems like an obvious second choice.

Open Address from McGregor to the People as He Runs for President of Ireland

One of the world’s most famous and fierce MMA stars, 37-year-old Conor McGregor, has once again found himself in the spotlight recently with his resolute and direct message to the Irish people, according to Irish online sources. On his social media page, he issued an important call to the people of Ireland.

In his words, the fighter says: “My wealth is limitless, enough to last my entire life. That means no one can ever buy me, and I’ll never negotiate with terrorists. If you elect me as president, fundamental change and healing will come to our country. Of course, some may find these words strange, but this is the absolute truth. Believe me, I am much stronger than you think, and I have a smart, strong team around me. We will overcome all difficulties. For the future of Ireland, only one thing is needed — to vote for Conor McGregor!”

McGregor’s statement, who is famous for his victories in MMA rings, has sparked heated discussions in Irish society. With the upcoming presidential election in November 2025, his candidacy and promises have become a hot topic for the Irish people.

I know how dubious the source is and all that but so interesting to see what’s in circulation out there

I don't actively vote for any specific party beyond a single election but did vote Labour in the recent EU, locals and General, my view is this is a desperation move by bacik for the party to appear relevant in the largest political event this year. Depending on their vocal levels of support for Connolly and her positions re Syria, Ukraine, Daly Wallace etc this act would absolutely color my view of voting for them again in the near future. They would be far better served politically by sitting this one out imo.

It's a slightly surprising move by Labour. Connolly appears to be much further to the left than the party, arguably heading out towards the extreme end of the spectrum - definitely not a 'mainstream' left wing candidate.

Utterly ridiculous if Lab sat this out. Connolly was a member and didn't leave because she was too left. She left over a selection squabble that is more or less forgotten. She has since said she strongly supports Higgins in his presidency.

They will be easily dismissed if they dont say anything publically.

She was a Labour member and Director of Elections for Michael D running as a Labour TD for years!

i didn’t realise she had such close links to MDH.

You’d wonder is he “pulling strings” behind the scenes for her - he is so self entitled and egotistical I wouldn’t put anything past him.

Regardless - the stretch limo story alone is enough to rule her unsuitable for the Àras.

I couldn’t repeat the responses I’ve got from Anyone I’ve asked about Catherine’s tilt at the park.

It would be surprising if he was - given her falling out with Labour came due to him not wanting her to be added as his running mate in the 2007 General Election.

Can’t see it happening - but the poll really shows that it’s still all about name recognition and not much else

Yeah AFAIK Martin has never given any encouragement to Bertie's ambitions in this regard…I mean if it was a situation where they were obliged to run somebody and Bertie was the only candidate not likely to 'lose his deposit' but sitting it out is always an option if all comes to all…

I also think that - whilst Ahern is enjoying the bit of “will he, won’t he” attention - he’s not going to volunteer himself into a situation where he will be repeatedly asked questions about tribunal findings

Ahern, will revert to standard, running about so fast, no journalist can nail him with a question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Clearly there are those in FF still in denial about the enduring damage Ahern did to them.

To be fair - that Indo article is referencing a poll of the general public as to who should run for FF - not a poll of FF members.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

The prospect of him running should have been dealt with by the party a long time ago, but they let him re-join.
I would love to see him run tbh to let him know what many think of him.

Odd that they chose MON as the poll's designated SF candidate but I guess useful for SF to know (assuming they trust the poll) that on 9% she would be only a marginal improvement on Liadh Ni Riada…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,335 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

When are FF or SF going to actually make a call about who they want to run?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Probably September. FG won’t officially declare until then.

Nor will Martin give Bertie any encouragement. Martin is trying to distance himself and the party from the days of Bertie. He will not score any own goals.

So Catherine Connolly has received the LP nomination. You can tell from newspaper letters that many on the left believe that the Left must take its rightful position as Head of State.

Meanwhile the latest poll puts "The Left" at 16% (I have added The Greens to that figure) and if they don't win, who do they blame but Sinn Fein for not lining up with them and if they do, because they didn't fully back her or some such.

Bertie is more likely to be elected !

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

It's a PR system, but if it comes down to two, I'll put McGuinness before Ahern.

Why would they have to scramble up another left candidate?
