    Hi All,

So We are just back from 2 weeks in Tamarit beach resort in Spain. Was grand and very hot. We are looking at somewhere for next year but bored with the Spain,Portugal,France, Canaries options.

Has anyone any suggestions and somewhere a little different? We will have an 11 and 14 yr old in tow with us.

Somewhere with a few bits to do, things to see/visit and a few shops and restaurants. Within a 3 hr,4 at a push, flight.

Not really interested in the high rise apartment accommodation. Looking more towards villas with a pool.

I hear eatern europe is lovely(have done Croatia).

    My head is fried!

    Looking forward to some suggestions!

Iceland. Note that it can get hot in the summer, given they have nearly 24 hour sunshine.

Would 2 weeks be too much in Iceland Victor?

you could always 'spend' longer, but you ll pay for it! last trip there was 10 days and cost me about 3k or so, camping!

No I meant enough to see and do? Not overly worried about price.

yup, by far the most expensive country ive ever been to, worth it though, if you re into things such as volcanoes etc. i could have rented a cheaper car(main cost at 2k for the 10 days), but….

Rhodes is resonably priced and plenty of villas, not sure if i'd call it different but it's unique in it's own way definately not built up, we went last year and decided to go again this year, the kids love snorkelling and the water is so calm and clear for them there.

If you want a variation on a sun holiday try Sarande in Albania. Close to Corfu too if you wanted a day trip. Albania is fantastic. Tirana is very underrated.

For a non sun holiday, Slovenia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. It has Ljubljana, Piran, The Julian Alps, Lake Bled. The Swiss Alps in the summer or the west coast of Norway are great as well.

Slovenia is pretty great and underrated. A lot cheaper than either Italy or Austria too. Its been 15 years since I was there but it was 2 euro a pint in a tourist area.

Italy?? We went to lake Garda a couple ot years ago. 2-3 days in Venice and then a week at Bella Italia hotel at lake Garda, with access to campsite included. Actually we preferred the campsite cabins, but it was sold out.

Kids loved swimming in the lake cos the water wasn't salty. My missus fell in love with Italy. Going to Amalfi coast next week. Probably lake Como next year.

Did you try cruise holidays? Explore a new town/city very day or just enjoy the pool, beaches, shows every evening, teen clubs etc. great itineraries from Barcelona or other Mediterranean cities.

Fethiye in Turkey, simply nowhere else in the 4 hour flight time that comes close to this place imo. An outstanding destination.

We went to Sarande for 2 weeks at Easter. Was gorgeous. Lots of day trip options and even better if you wanted to rent a car.

There are not heaps of "resorts' yet but they are on the rise. It was so lovely to be somewhere that ticked all the tourist boxes but didn't have the endless streets of tourist shops, nor did we feel ripped off at any stage. 100% recommend.

I'd also recommend Lake Garda and with teenagers plenty of watersports options on the Lake if that's their thing.

Now that you mention Croatia when we stayed in Dubrovnik all the locals were telling us that Montenegro next to it was so beautiful and they all go there as cheaper.

Now I've no idea how developed it is but just said I'd mention it as you said your were in Croatia.

Great ideas so far. Will be checking them all out..keep em coming.

Like the sound of Slovenia and Albania!

Check out something like Lakes and Mountains with TUI, we've done Austria with them and used the ski lifts to take us up the mountains and do the trails then from there and already mentioned I'd second Lake Garda

    Italy lakes are great.

Also the Liguaria region in Italy is fabulous. Especially where it meets France.

Or the south of Italy near Puglia is also lovely. Not expensive but you'd need a car to get around.

I visited Croatia and Montenegro this year. I found Montenegro (Kotor) very touristy and expensive. It was ruined by massive Cruise ships, gangs of them walking round holding up group numbers so no one would get lost like sheep. Went to visit our Lady of the Rocks and you could not move with instahuns. Very similar to Dubrovnik in that regard.

What I did like was Island hopping, Mijet has a beautiful national park, you can hike and cycle round. My favourite was Korcula, the old town is like a mini Dubrovnik. We stayed in Lumbarda (only way I would describe it is like Greece in the 70"s) totally unspoilt and not over developed. There are other islands you can do as well, Hvar being the one for the younger ones. I'll definitely return to that part of the world. Ferry to Mijet is 1 hour 40 from Dubrovnik, stayed there for 2 days and hopped back on to Korcula (40 mins from there).

Im also looking at Albania (this will be the next big thing, so go now before it's ruined).

I hate cruises but consider "Sail Croatia" when your youngest is a bit older. I hate the thought of a cruise but like the idea of this.

guy in work just back from albania, he went with his missus and teenager (think 17 year old) and he was raving about it. he described almost every meal he had! they were there for two weeks, spent time somewhere on the coast near corfu for half of it.

if you have money consider switzerland, not everything is expensive and you can get reasonable prices with research and booking early. their school holidays start later than here (varies across the country, but going in june means you're not competing with locals for accommodation etc) and all ages are well catered for. swimming areas (can be pools or by lakes or rivers) are cheap to pay into and well organised.

I was going to come on to suggest this! We stayed in the Bella Italia campsite too. Also did a campsite outside Nice. Monaco is very accessible and so is Vingtimiglia in Italy for a great Friday market.

Why not Orlando? Kids can go to more cultured places when they're older and can appreciate it more, as can you when you can relax without the kids. Now is the time for a place like Florida which they will love guaranteed, and if they're happy you're happy. Can also easily rent a car and drive down to Miami.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

Guys, all great suggestions and options and actively looking at all!

@kowloonkev America is off the list untill that clown is out of office. I'm not going to contribute to his "make america great again" figures.

I appreciate the suggestion though. Thanks

Fly in to Trieste with Ryanair. Stay a couple of nights. Then move to Ljubljana in Slovenia. Get Flixbus from one to the other. We did it last year, great holiday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,143 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

What's the story with Albania, is it packaged by some tour operator? I'd be interested, but am probably out of the loop a bit since we just go where Ryanair goes lol and DIY it usually. Thanks.

I'm heading off to see Rome next month, it's been on the to do list forever. Now I know it'll be busy with the Jubilee and all that, so we are staying on the coast in Ostia Lido and taking the train in, it's only 30 minutes. Ostia Antica is up the road which is said to be as good if not better than Pompeii. Hope it works out for us ha ha.

Anyway, can't beat Italy IMO. These are the three ways we did it over a few years, all by train (super easy and cheap) and hopped from place to place.

    Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Siena.

Padova (Padua) an amazing spot, Venice half an hour away, and Verona.

    Bologna, Modena, Ravenna

Lake Garda, but take the boat around the lake and stop at Sirmeone. It's hop on hop off. Lovely.

Rome and surrounds next, then hoping to go to the South next time, and take the train across the Strait of Messina to Sicily. More Greek and Roman stuff for me in Syracuse. Not sure where to fly into!

I've more but don't want to come across as yer wan going around the world in 80 days or anything.

Albania was DIY. Not sure if its offered with any tour operators. Flew there with Lufthansa. Dublin - Munich - Tirana.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,143 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Ah thanks for that. I was thinking there must be a DIY way, and of course there is, except lazy me doesn't really want to do multi leg flights for Europe! But needs must I suppose.

Can I ask if you found the accommodation easy to book and was it OK?

  • Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 2,517 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nigel Fairservice

Yes, you'll find accommodation on all the main booking sites. We stayed in the Lot Hotel, we paid €290 for 3 nights. Nice hotel. Albania is very cheap by Irish standards for eating out, drinks, etc

Albania was described to me by someone who went there last year as Bulgaria or Croatia 30 years ago, she and her husband left after 2 days,. (said was definitely for locals-I've spent a bit of time in the Baltics and Russia, some nice places there too but I definitely know what she meant when she said "definitely for locals").
