I wouldn't be able to handle the short daylight in the winter, year in year out. Also, although there are many aspects of their rules-based society that appeal to me, it gets a bit Borgish after a while. I have friends and colleagues who have moved to Sweden and are still happily there after 20 years, so my comment wasn't a damnation of Sweden in general as a place to live. More that I would struggle to stay there long term.

I definitely agree there, when I was commuting into Dublin it was so much easier on the bike.

I've been trying to use the cargo bike as much as possible around home lately and even with both kids it's much easier than driving for most things

Biggest issue is the crappy infrastructure and having to share the roads with a load of cars. It's just unpleasant having cars trying to pass you and listen to the engines revving as they go past

The big difference with those cities is they put the infrastructure in and built it up to the point where bikes are dominant in the city

Even the wildest plans for public transportation here will still require a lot of cars, so we'll need to live with them and we'll need to convert them over to electric

I'm not suggesting families ditch the car altogether but you can be sure that the new town link in Carlow could meet the needs of a lot more car owners when they don't need to drive kids around and do shopping.

do you live in Carlow, and do you still own a car?

It's hard to handle the short daylight here as it is and here in Ireland I can ride my motorbike almost all year around, I got the Deavuville in January and rode it home no problem, that's fantastic for a country 53 Degrees North. I wouldn't really want to live in a colder climate in Winter.

I don't know about the rules or borg like people though.

Well I'm not convinced about EV , might save local pollution but the rest of the harm done through mining I will never swallow as being green.

Anyway, the gravy train of taxation on cars and fuel has created a situation where it's too lucrative to discourage car use.

Moving away from cars onto single modes of transport would definitely help free up the streets, you could ride a 125 cc motorbike on a car license here until the E.U f1cked up the motorbike licensing and abolished this. We need encourage more people out of cars and it's as simple as this. Allow motorbikes/scooters use the bus lane, many do anyway just make it legal. Bring back mopeds and 125cc bikes on car license, make alternatives easier.

Mopeds can use the cycle lanes in Copenhagen but they're wide enough.

I definitely believe a mega tax on SUV would be a good thing, the E.U need to ban SUV altogether, they're a scourge on the roads and in car parks. Say 2000 a year tax and an extra 20% VRT .

There should be absolutely no VRT relief on SUV EV or Grant. Again, we need to disincentivise the purchase of SUV as much as possible, including crossovers, whatever fuels them.

Things like commuter trains are a joke, there's only a 7:03 am and a 7:56 am train from Carlow to Heuston in the mornings. No way I would drive the N7 to Dublin if I had to go to the City but those train times are a joke. There should be trains every 30 mins at least from 6 am. The train is probably packed too, although I like that you can book your seat, I did this last year when I had to go to Dublin to get the Cee'd, I got to Heuston, luas to Jervis, had some breakfast then Luas to Kylemore and walked to long mile. A lot nicer experience than the N7.

Dublin needs a proper underground, apart from some metro links there's no serious effort for a good public transport network in Dublin as far as I can tell.

I don't live in the town, I like 5 Kms from Supervalue if you know it off the Hacketstown road, the centre, Tullow street is around 7 kms, I live in the country but , yes I own a car and a motorbike, the motorbike gets a lot more use and I ride it into town all the time and it's great for free parking anywhere I want, obviously I don't block access, although a smaller bike would be easier in town but I ride a lot , could go off 160 Kms any day at random so nice to have the bigger bike but bikes can be got cheap so so no problem having 2 and insurance is only 260 Euro, tax 80.

I have been debating getting rid of one of the cars, convincing the missus is another matter, she's always worried about the what if I need to go here and you need to go there etc. Ideally I'd love her to get rid of the Outlander. I love the bike so I'll ride that all day long if I could, cars will never be the same.

would agree there are plenty of SUVs on Danish roads but a noticeably lessor number of pick ups - saw almost no Ranger Raptors. Loads of vans instead, I couldn’t get over how popular the ID Buzz commercial was. They were everywhere. Kind of tarnishes the trendy MPV image in my view.

One of the most hideous looking car I saw on the road there was the following Chinese yoke

Made the big Chevy parked beside it look positively attractive

Certainly traffic was much quieter in Copenhagen, also far less busses than are clogging up Dublin City Centre streets. Then again when you have a brilliant metro and urban rail system in place who needs busses and cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Oh I was thinking ye meant ye saw lots of SUV on Swedish roads, I was only in Copenhagen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,017 ✭✭✭✭josip

Yes, those Chinese yokes (Hongqis) are very common in Norway also. I think they and the Buzz are the main options for an EV 6+ seater and Norway is going all out for the EVs so there's very little non EV being bought new. I think Oslo will only allow electric for all modes of transport by the end of next year. Nice to have the gas revenue to be able to fund this.

carlow town is completely choked up and absolutely ideal for cycling. Needs a big cultural shift though.

Why registrations are up in June? Is there any rules change that caused dealers to do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,316 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

I think June was driven mostly by Tesla deliveries, they do a boat load of cars to Ireland every quarter

It was very modest bump for Tesla vs last year, however there was major increase for Smart #1 and Hyundai Inster. Some other random ICE also had good month like Golf or Focus. Very unusual.

And Tesla copped on this year and held off many deliveries until July to keep the custom.

July will be interesting to see if Tesla’s sales are higher than in previous years where they were pretty militant on June or none!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,303 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

I have a feeling they will. Perhaps for the first time they have actually managed it well? They got a bump in June deliveries without being too pushy, and should also have an expected increase in July deliveries as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭sk8board

They might have more in July, but it’s very hard to see it, based on their historical data.

I would’ve thought a lot more people this year wouldn’t have been bullied into getting the 251, and wait for July pickup, but last year most of the sales were indeed 241, vs waiting for a July pickup 242:

    image.png

For comparison, Tesla registered 540 cars this June, pretty much the same as 2024, so they’d have to seriously buck the trend to find more than that in July, with just 200 in July last year

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,402 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

That’s exactly what we’re talking about.
In previous years they were militant on June pick ups. This year they allowed referrals to July.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭sk8board

Totally - however for July to beat June it would require over 1,100 sales across both months - that feels like a bit of a reach

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,402 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Ohh I don’t think that will happen. I’m curious to July 2025 V July of previous years.

Have you seen the big redevelopment planned for Carlow ? it will see the complete closure of traffic off Tullow Street from Shamrock Square all the way to Dublin Street and all of Potato Market. That's all well and good but they need to bring in a lot better than just fast food and vape shops to make it attractive enough for people to come to town, they allowed the centre of Carlow to deteriorate when they allowed the fair green and Dunne Stores areas to be built during the Boom and they knocked the old Nationalist building on Tullow Street along with other original buildings beside it for ugly steel and glass building , it should never have been allowed to demolish a lot of buildings in the town, some were done illegally and court orders given to rebuild but nothing happened.

Traffic is a lot worse in Carlow since they put up those poxy new lights at Aldi instead of a roundabout.

Cycling and more use of 2 wheel transport in general be it moped, petrol scooter and motorbike, all have the potential to seriously reduce gridlock, most of the time we see only 1 person per car.

Irish times has an article on the breakdown for July, includes some county stats with Wicklow at 25% EV vs Mayo at 10% EV. Also, EV rentals are a fraction of a percent of overall fleet https://archive.ph/L2ZtF

pretty dire considering the juniper and highland are now freely available:

To put it another way, about 75% of people took the 251 delivery when they could clearly have waited that extra week. There weren’t any new Tesla buyers to resell your slot to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭kanuseeme

Plus the fact their cars are technically 6 months old now, you would wonder why a person would register a car in June when 10 other people wait till July to do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭sk8board

well that’s the whole point - Tesla tell you they’ll just give your car to someone else, so buyers feel under pressure to take delivery the last week of June so that Tesla’s H1 financials look a tiny bit better. There’s literally no other reason - it’s a financial side effect whereby Tesla can only realise the revenue when the car is delivered, whereas an OEM manufacturer can realise the revenue when they sell the car to a distributor.

    here’s all EV manufacturers, 2024 vs 2025.

Tesla and BYD the only notable fallers. The new Y juniper only attracted 385 buyers in June and July, which is fewer of the old Y’s sold last year.

    image.png

And here’s 2025 vs 2024 by model, the EV3 and inster are smashing it. The Dacia Spring is nowhere, just 109 sales all year.
The 2 other new models in the top 20 are the Elroq and Explorer.

The ID3 is a surprise, considering the new pricing and bigger battery/range, but I think the ID4 pricing makes it an even more compelling proposition, so the sales are going there I’d say.

Some other notables: 250 Renault 5’s in just the last month

I predicted 1500 Model Y’s to be sold in 2025. I don’t think that will happen now 😀

I didn’t expect Model 3 sales to be up though.

What we are seeing though, is the onslaught of small EV’s. That’s what was missing in general and proof is in the pudding that they are selling big, Inster, R5 etc

I was looking at both our household EVs to see how popular they are. Although it was never going to be a volume seller, I notice my Tavascan has sold less in 2025 than the R5 despite being available for the entire year and R5 only really being available for 252 plate in any significant numbers.

I guess Inster and R5 deliveries will continue in August and September before slowing down. Some cracking small cars out there. My mother should be collecting an inster next week.

EV sales overall pretty good and growing well, the rise of some excellent PHEVs with genuinely useful electric range is a positive in my opinion.

Director in work has his X5 PHEV a month now, religiously plugging in early in the morning when he is in before the rest of us and leaving the charger free for the EVs arriving about 2 hours later. This guy was anti everything EV and if the diesel X5 was still available he would have bought another one, he loves the drive and smoothness of the electric motor and has already said he will never have another diesel and neither will anyone in his family. Half a tank of petrol used in the month where he was using 2 to 3 tanks of diesel.

I know some people dont like PHEVs but this generation of them have upped the game and once they are being used correctly, im all for them continuing.
