Why would your company invest money in EV vans but not pay a tiny portion of the cost to get a charger or two installed at the premises where they are stored sitting idle all night?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,407 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Exactly, complete false economy not installing chargers. We have 3 x 11 kw chargers in head ofice for 8 EVs and a 4th being installed very shortly because one of the directors is getting a PHEV and will be charging very regularly.

One of our regional offices has another charger for 2 EVs.

Even paid for 2 guys chargers at home to get them to move to EV and not use valuable time and money at public chargers.

    All going well.

Next project, getting the vans to some sort of electrification!

I went back o last June and July for Tesla, and just 200 of the 700 deliveries hung on for a 242.

It’s as near as dammit 500 June 2024 deliveries and 200 July.

I’ve seen a bunch of new Y’s all this week, albeit I’m in prime EV commuter land. I’m genuinely still very much meh on the new generic egg design. It could be anything really.

Rental premises sadly. I would have bought Diesel if it was up to me

Anyone a SIMI member and have access to the daily registration data? Feel like most 252s I'm seeing are EVs or some sort of hybrid but it could be just a mispresentative sampling.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,404 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

small sample. There’s 3x 252’s on my road, 1 Inster and 2 Skoda diesels.

saw a silver 251-D-42,xxx Taycan today, so it was registered the last week of June presumably - I hope they got some amazing deal to be buying a new Taycan these days, and also not waiting for the new reg

    https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2025/0711/1523019-new-ev-sales-jump-almost-30-in-first-half-of-year/

"New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that 13,102 new EVs were licensed during the six month period, up from 10,344 the same time in 2024.

21,424 new petrol cars were licensed between January and June, down 15% on the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23% to 13,439."

Absolutely and not for me but car buyers are a conservative bunch. Many of these folks would still buy diesels if they were available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,310 ✭✭✭creedp

Todate seen 2 252 Mercedes 300de phevs. Mercedes seem to be the only company selling diesel phevs so fairly niche option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

If every manufacturer had a car like the BMW i3 Rex then a lot more people would have chose to go PHEV, it had and probably still to this day the most EV range of any PHEV ever build, 170-220 Kms and complete independence from the public charging network, no waiting on charging if you didn't need to , it offered the best of both worlds, it gave people more choice.

If someone wants to buy new diesels then who cares ? I know people who bought diesels recently.

I care, because I've to breath that shite that comes out of the exhaust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Ah, the new ones aren't bad, especially the ones with the adblue.

That the container that no-one refills and just ignores the warning?

Is it besides the particulate filter that people get bypassed?

Ah yeah in fairness adblue reduces Nox up to 90% that's a pretty massive difference vs no adblue. That makes your modern diesel pretty damn clean.

I thought the car won't drive if addblue isn't topped up ?

I'd say in fairness the amount of people who delete Particulate filter is very few.

You'd think the NCT would detect the removal of filters ?

Would you run a pipe from the exhaust and breathe in a few lungfuls ?

2 of my neighbours were running without AdBlue for years and their DPF filter light was on all the time. Their mechanic just told them to ignore it until the NCT

Maybe the new Euro 7s won't let you drive without AdBlue but almost every independent study has shown that they are falling far short of their advertised emissions in real world use

I had a Ford transit custom that used adblue, one of the new modern "clean" diesels. I have an air quality meter in my house and when I used to start her up, if windows were open, the air quality dropped significantly. VW et al tried to pull the wool over our eyes a few years ago with their "clean" diesels. Fool me once.

I live close to a village with bad congestion, fook me it's toxic. FYI the shorter you're the worse the impact of the traffic fumes, impact on children is greater, so the sooner diesel engines are banished, the better imo.

I couldn't believe the difference in traffic congestion in Copehhagen , Denmark or Malmo, Sweden, compare to Carlow Town there was nothing like it in these cities.

A lot more bicycles, motorbikes, scooters and I even say Mopeds using the cycle lanes but the traffic was so light why anyone would bother is beyond me.

Ireland needs to significantly reduce it's fascination and love affair for passenger cars who mostly have one person in them, EV isn't going to solve congestion or another thing, I didn't see a fraction of the amount of SUV there that is here in Ireland.

It was an absolute pleasure to drive around Sweden and back into Malmo, we took the train back to Copenhagen and we didn't need a car there anyway.

I must have seen 1000 Bicycles outside Central Station in Copenhagen, It was nuts, I never saw so many bicycles in one place !

Pretty much every town in Ireland is choking with cars and big SUV.

When I lived in Germany, I had a c220 de phev and it was the best of both worlds. 4.8l/100 with a lot of high speed autobahn driving.

A lovely car but for the annoying non touch led screen and only 70km range on electric.

Why wouldn't you add ad blue. It's not expensive.

Revisited Goteborg briefly the same week you were in Malmo. From 13:30 I stopped off at the old apartment, soccer club, work place and visited an old friend in the burbs for a few hours before getting the 23:45 ferry to Puttgarden. Just not possible using bicycles, trams, trains and buses.

Also, on the interurban routes I traveled this time, I saw no difference in vehicle types compared to Ireland, just as many XC60s and XC90s. Maybe you traveled different interurban routes. Once you head up north, you'll see quite a lot of pick up trucks also, all the way up to F350 dualies which even in Sweden seemed overkill. You'll also see lots of classic old US cars but I doubt they are doing big mileage.

Volvo didn't develop a reputation for safety as a marketing gimmick; it was necessary to improve survivability in the event of an elk collision. As a result, Volvos have always been heavier and a bit bulkier than most other brands.

Sweden is a lovely place to visit. But having lived there (3 different cities) for a while, I wouldn't like to live there permanently. Even if the urban transport/traffic is better.

Certainly true regarding our love affair with cars, most vehicles sitting in traffic have only a driver. Ev's won't solve that issue, they will however clean up local air and help with noise pollution too. Bring it on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I had the BMW i3 Rex which could do 170-220 Km on EV, it was the best thing ever, except the rear doors were a pain when the Boys got bigger and could get in and out themselves. Flick on the generator and off you go wherever you want, stop for a charge, or not, up to you, absolutely fantastic machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I did see the Volvo SUVs but I saw a lot more non SUV and a lot more older cars vs Ireland and a lot more estates, can't get a Passat estate in Ireland any more because VW Ireland said everyone want SUV it's not worth their while , can get it everywhere else. Great practical car, that's what we had as rental in Sweden. We only went as far North as Jonkoping.

Why would you not like to live in Sweden ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Less cars would solve air and noise pollution , congestion is just as bad, streets clogged up.

I know there is a redevelopment plan for Carlow Town, probably never happen but the idea is to make all of Tullow Street from Shamrock Square to Dublin Street and all of Potato marker pedestrian only, quite nice on the plan if they can do it. It would be a shock to the system not being able to drive down it or go down on the bike these roads but, we need to change our attitudes to car ownership and move to more viable forms of transport such as bicycles, Scooters and motorcycles, I'm not saying put the family on motorbikes but they can all ride bikes around town instead. Carlow has a bus link now too, it only took until 2023 and there's plenty of people who won't use it and take the car around town. Oddly, it doesn't go to the train station lol, but calls for new routes would see it connect to the station.

Unfortunately the purchase of cars , Tax on petrol, tax on car repairs is far too lucrative for the Government so there is no incentive to change.

If I could get from Carlow to the work site in Blanch I wouldn't be arsed taking the car. In peak traffic an hours trip can take 1.45 mins. To travel 85 Kms, that's insanity whether diesel land rover or EV. I'd have to get off at Heuston, get bus would take a hell of a lot longer and I don't know, probably have to change buses ? never going to happen.
