Ninja Gaiden Ragebound reviews coming in with some very strong review scores.

I’m a little surprised, as I thought the demo was very underwhelming indeed. Some mixed reviews out there as well but definitely leaning positive overall. Will see where things settle after it has been out a while.

Microsoft games outsell Sony games on PlayStation

It's strange to see although more to do with Microsoft having a lot of games ready to publish straight away.

That and the games which are in that top 10, most of them are big franchise games recently released on Playstation; Forza Horizon 5, Elder Scrolls 4, Doom Dark Ages. Then you have COD & Minecraft which will always sell big numbers.

Then again, Indiana Jones nearly outselling Death Stranding 2 is a big marker. IJ was released on PS5 in either December or January. I know DS2 isn't everyone's cup of tea but would have thought it'd be a bit higher on the list.

While it certainly marks a change in the industry and Microsoft's place in it, Forza Horizon is really the only striking one as the other ones would've been multi-platform releases in the first place had Microsoft not bought up their respective publishers.

Totally unsurprising Death Stranding 2 sold less than some of those other releases though - it's just such a specific, idiosyncratic work it almost feels as if Sony is being 'old Sony'* in funding such an eccentric, prestige work that isn't a huge commercial juggernaut. Will surely have lost some people who played the first game and didn't care for it too.

*Granted, 'old Sony' used to fund small, oddball projects rather than massive blockbusters from gaming's most prominent auteur, but feels like Death Stranding wouldn't exist as it currently does without that kind of first party budget.

On a different note, got a Steam pop up for the MGS3 remake the other day and was taken aback to see they're charging 80 quid for it.

I was already not keen on that release as I don't think the original needs a big UE5 overhaul (not to mention Kojima's lack of involvement), but bloody hell 80 quid is a lot of money when the remastered version of the game is already readily available for a quarter of that price and remains perfectly playable.

I think 80 will be the norm from now on unfortunately. They tried that price point on 369 but it didn't last as it hit critical mass and the prices dropped but that was due to how retail physical games work. Digital doesn't have factors like warehousing costs.

Remember when they told us digital would be cheaper?

I saw a few headlines the past week or two about the likes of EA and Microsoft pulling back from an 80 price tag for now. I'm guessing they were all expecting/hoping GTA6 would be the first through the door on that one and they could all follow. I'd say they might mostly stay at 70 until Xmas and then start to rise in the usual Feb/Mar release window.

You could also look at it that the only 2 SIE published games released this year are on the list! And as noted by Johnny the only one that would have been an exclusive if MS didn't buy them out would have been FH5. So its technically 1 MS game, 2 SIE games, a CoD, an AC, a Soulslike, Minecraft and 3 Bethesda games.

It also highlights how little SIE have done this year, but that'll change somewhat in October with Ghost of Yotei, and maybe even Lost Soul Aside.

I was looking at Spider-Man 2 and got a shock that it was €80 on Steam. Made me think twice, but I got it in the Steam Summer sale for €40.

To be honest, It's well worth it for 40, and I'd argue even for 80. It's almost part animated movie, part game, and the physics engine is unreal.

Funny enough Nintendo has gone the 'digital is cheaper' route this gen, but I suspect that's entirely down to the production price of the Switch 2 carts being so bloody expensive :P

Given games have largely been inflation proof and the 'AAA' market at least seems to be stagnating, it's not surprising to see price rises. Still, maybe just me, but 80 euro for a lavish reskin - which is what the MGS3 re-release seems to be going by previews - seems particularly egregious when the original game is still so widely available. I know Demon's Souls released at the same price, which wasn't really defensible either.

On a side note, I only finished Indiana Jones two nights ago on the PS5 and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable games that I've played in a very long time. It had the 'feel' of an Indiana Jones film and nailed the humour, tone and adventure of the movies. Every character around Indy felt like they were plucked right out of the films. One of the best games based on movies (albeit that it obviously was a new story) that I've ever played.

The ability to make Indy feel like Harrison Ford was incredible, Troy Baker and MachineGames did some incredible work.

I think GTA6 not releasing is a massive issue for the industry. Adoption of the PS5 has been quite low with many happy to just have a PS4 as it's still getting new games. Don't get me started on the XBox.

With adoption so low I don't see games making the sales they should be making at this stage of a console life cycle.

I've got a lot of friends that wouldn't be big gamers but would have had previous consoles and every single one of them is not buying a console until a GTA comes out and I think there's quite a lot of people like them and holding back current gen sales.

It's a good game but I would've liked it more without the final big sandbox area. It's not a bad area by any stretch, but I think it kills the story momentum just as it reaches a pleasingly zany climax, and I don't think the gameplay / exploration there is as interesting as the Vatican and Giza levels, and they start relying a bit too much on tedious dream sequences too. It's 'fine', but I would've been happy for it to wrap up 5 or so hours earlier than it actually did. Didn't help that the game glitched out for me and I couldn't go back to any of the previous levels to finish one of the big end game sub-missions,

Thata fair. The Sukhothai area was a bit tedious to get around as the novelty of the boat wore off quickly. It didn't bother me too much but agreed that it could be improved by tightening that level up. Giza and the Vatican were very pleasing to explore whilst never feeling huge.

Definitely diminishing returns in terms of graphical fidelity in games to make people think they need the newest console. Most casual gamers wouldn't care much about the benefits of the SSD etc, so yeah they're waiting for something like GTA6 to really push them into joining this gen.

Not the best Nintendo direct but at least they are keeping up with tradition of no silksong release date. Some ok stuff that is all coming to other platforms. Pac world 2 getting a remaster is nice and a Katamari game that will probably disappoint as it's never had the magic since the creator left after the second game. Octopath and the action RPG with HD 2D graphics looked good.

A SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance Demo has been quietly released. Already have the physical version preordered but hopefully the demo can further whet the appetite.

Was it always called Riven: the sequel to Myst, or is that a new thing? 😅

Yes it was always the sequel to Myst was a massive game with more casual PC users so it was good marketing as they probably wouldn't cop that it wasn't called Myst 2.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It looks great but I'm a little apprehensive about it as enemies seem to take a lot of hits whereas Shinobi enemies are traditionally one hit which gives the game a nice pace. It's something ninja Gaiden seems to have nailed.

Saying that, I was initially very negative about the same team's Streets of Rage 4 but they absolutely nailed that game.

I was hoping for Metaphor for Switch 2 Square Enix certainly dropped a good few surprises Atlus West came in with Persona 3 Reload.

I'm guessing to see how that works out before Metaphor or any Persona 4 remake news.Hela looks great fun but like a lot of stuff today out next year.

Kind of joking as Potential Monkey had said "I remember trying and failing at Myst, and then picking up Riven not knowing it was a sequel".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,770 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

My memory is not the best these days...

Edit: I think i remember now, I played Riven before Myst. But bottom line is i failed at both.

    Myst? What’s a Myst?

Got absolutely trolled by Xenoblade 2 and honestly laughed my ass off at it.

Going to spoiler it for people that intend to play the game.

In there first area of the game there's a very ominous door called something like "Noppon Cold Fusion generator" with insanely high requirements to get it.

So I was doing side quests the last two days and focusing on getting the criteria up to open that door.

Finally get the criteria I need so I open the door and

There's absolutely nothing in there except this little fucker:

    Spoiler in the attachment:

Has anyone been in Game (or what's now passing as Game) lately? Seems their new tactic is to not actually put prices on their games anymore. Was in 2 different ones and the prices seem to only be on games on offer.
