The Switch 2 specs outclass the PS4 by quite a bit.

Is the Switch 2 screen "bad/laggy" or are they nit picking ?

    I'd play docked mostly...but ...

Yep it's not great. You really feel it in retro games/ fighting games. It's frustrating because they are using retrogames to sell their online service and it makes them frustrating and it's just going to perpetuate the myth that retrogames are **** and too hard when it's modern lag that is making them so awful.

The screen image quality is a big leap over the OG Switch - night and day difference, if still short of OLED quality. But there’s definite motion quality issues. I noticed it most in Mario Kart where it sorta feels like it’s running at 40 FPS instead of 60. Just that hint of ghosting that makes it feel less smooth than it actually is.

Mileage will vary, and again I’d still consider it a big quality jump over the original Switch. But I know DF has suggested even a calibration change in a firmware update could improve the motion clarity - just hard to know if Nintendo would bother.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The calibration change would lead to a big hit in battery life and I don't see Nintendo doing that.

I've my Vita out at the moment and the OLED is just glorious. If the vita had an OLED screen in 2012, why the hell doesn't the switch 2? There probably isn't a mid range or above mobile phone that isn't OLED.

Because Nintendo fanboys will buy it regardless, then make excuses about why it had to be that screen, and its better than the 7 year old screen. And gives Greedtendo the chance to sell an OLED model later on. They may be making great games (depending on your own personal definition of great), but they are one of the greediest gaming companies out there, with Apple levels of fanboyism protecting that.

I'd love to get back into Nintendo, if only for a few games (which I'll undoubtedly not agree with how great they are and find plenty of issues with), but im being priced out of it. Between the cost of the 2, the 100% necessary Pro controller, the nearly always full price games, the lack of a decent subscription service, and the "you dont actually own the Switch 2" abilities of Greentendo to be able to brick your console... quality of games aside, they dont make an appealing offer. Regardless, I won't be purchasing unless they bring a docked only console for at most half the price. So probably never. Again. Let's hope those privateers can crack it!

Think you need to check your own fanboyism for a giant corporation there. They're all greedy and Sony is as bad as Nintendo. Some of the anti consumer stuff they have been involved in has been pretty disgusting.

I'll address the stuff that is just plain wrong anyway.

A pro controller isn't necessary. I jump between a pro controller and joycons and the joycons are really nice this time.

You also need to understand that the price of physical games is dictated by how long and how much warehouse space they take up. Nintendo is just good a this and their games seem to always be in demand. Nintendo will have a fire sale on badly performing games.

Anyway, you should stop being a fanboy of a big corporations and just become a fan of games. Money is definitely an issue but it's just a bit silly seeing people stick up for one manufacturer over another.

    Especially if it's Microsoft.

Just re: controllers and longevity. There are a load of full features 3rd party controllers for Switch 1/2, some with hall effect sticks. With PS5 you are stuck with the drifting Sony ones.

How come there are almost zero 3rd party PS5 dualsense controllers ? It's like a Switch controller with a touch pad on it. It doesn't even need to support rumble, trigger resistance, gyro, lights, to be 100% useful. Does Sony block their sales ?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You need a license from Sony to produce controllers for the PS5. There's a lock out chip or code that's needed in the controller. Microsoft and Nintendo do the same but are much more willing to license out and at a much cheaper price whereas Sony are either charging way too much or just not licensing out. And the sticks on those controllers are awful considering the price.

8bitdo USB dongle, 11 quid and I use whatever controller I want on both my switch and now switch 2. Saved 80 quid on a 100% unneccesary pro controller.

I cant imagine being a fanboy of any corporation, it would be tiresome as they are all miserable and just want money which makes sense, thankfully in a scenario where it doesnt matter to me that much so long as I am getting value for money. So far early indicators have the switch 2 second to Xbox in terms of time spent turned on which is a great metric for value for money.

Only reason for xbox being played over ps5 is that all games on MS are half price due to game sharing, gamepass being slightly better and again cheaper than PSplus, Switch is down to exclusives. If sony crack either of those nuts they will slowly catch up

Backwards compatibility has been a big boon to the Switch 2 during the launch window. Since there's so few switch 2 games yet it's been great playing the games I haven't finished yet but improved so much by the switch 2. Just the loading and performance increases make a massive difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,586 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I really like the dualsense controller. What I don't like is the fact that my PS5 might be fully functioning but unusable because I can't get a decent controller for it in 10/20 year's time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭recyclops

I think Xbox had the same boon and with the upgrades I know its not the same for everyone but really does help as you dont lose that catalogue youve been building over time. Also they allow peripheries to be transferred as well to bowsers point.

I personally think thats the reason people stick with Sony, theyre so digitally ingrained they cant leave between trophies, friendlists, digital purchases etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,678 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I saw it mentioned elsewhere that someone, possibly Phil Spencer himself, said that the Xbox One generation was the worst one for them to lose to Sony, because that's when people really started fully expanding their online communities, digital libraries etc. So yeah it's definitely a big factor in why so many people stuck with Sony for this gen.

I definitely have a strong preference towards Playstation, but Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo…. they're all scummy, greedy and outright b*stards at times in their own ways. None of them deserve any kind of real allegiance.

I honestly think friends lists and trophies would be a massive reason for people to stay in a companies eco system. Sony's eco system was awful on PS3 but Microsoft were such a **** up that they still managed to lose people despite them being tied to an eco system. The 360 was all about trophies and group chat, no body cared about trophies as they were badly handled and it's still kind of a crap system. And yet all I hear about is platinuming a game and never hear anything about achievements. It's no wonder they don't announce sales figures as it's probably worse than we expect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭recyclops

and its kinda crazy because for a while you were nearly able to self fund your online gaming with achievements mixed with rewards and the points they got you, was working too well so MS in a dick move altered it

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Saw there that the Ori devs are focusing on PC and PS5 now. Looking at Switch 2 as well. XBox will be assessed much later whether they will bother releasing on it.

I have an original Switch and have drift problems with all my controls unfortunately, despite them being well cared for. I stopped playing the Switch altogether after a while as a result, unfortunately.

In terms of games... For some reason I just don't care that much for Odyssey, Zelda etc., but prefer instead the TBS games, which are great on a hand held console - X-Com, Banner Saga, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Sony perfect, but they suit me and my personal preferences more than the others. And having had all their consoles does lend to the nostalgic factor. Im still not a massive digital person, any new games are still bought physical so I can trade them in, so it wasn't the digital side of things that kept me tied to them, it was the the strong, story driven single player games that kept me. MS was concentrating on multiplayer, and had me for the 360 era, but they dropped the ball in other areas, areas I'm gone back to since multiplayer is not something I do much any more. I've also not had any drift issues with my DualSense controllers, but in general I trade in the oldest one every year thanks to Smyths. Actually, i correct myself, my OG DualSense was just developing slight drift before I traded it in nearly 2 years later, but the other ~8 have been fine. I think its down to luck tbh! And PS+ Premium is cheaper than GPU! Their first party day 1 games haven't exactly been a draw either.

And yes, they're all greedy companies with only money on their minds, but PS serves me and my preferences the best out of them. Great we all have choices, just pointing out that Nintendo ain't winning me back any time soon. There's no reason they couldn't do a cheap docked only Switch, like they did a cheap(er) handheld only Switch Lite.

To be clear, Switch first party controllers drift. I was saying that at least with Switch you have a load of 3rd party options. With PS, you don't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,586 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I presume MS owns Ori including the source code , so they get to decide if the games go to PS ?

I wonder will they bump up the res on those games for Switch 2 or even provide a 120 FPS option. For free please 😁

Mindseye has dropped down to €29.99 in Smyths. €29.99 too much for me 😆

Google decided to add wee Easter eggs for anyone who searches for the Zelda movie actors, Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth.

    Man, Parappa the Rapper.

I love everything about the game. How it looks. The music. The vibes. I love how back in 1997 on release it felt like the turning point when the PlayStation went from a decent console to something really special with it being the home for new and weird videogame experiences and experimental projects. It made the PlayStation feel like it was for everyone, not just gaming nerds. 1997 was already a massive year for PlayStation with classics like FF7. It continued that PlayStation cool factor that launch titles like wipeout and Loaded brought. It pretty much made rhythm games a genre.

I just don't like how it plays.

I didn't have much experience of this game back in the day, I'm more familiar with Um Jammer Lammy but playing it now I thought something was wrong with either me or the game. I played the PSP version on Vita so thought the port might be broke but I loaded up an emulator and it's the same.

Everyone is blaming the bad port online but I found a video from some Parappa experts and the issue is that the visual button presses don't line up with the actual timing. To make matters worse, how off the visual is differs with each stage. I'm starting to enjoy the game since I use the visuals to let me know what button to press and now tap along in time to the music. I've reached the infamous stage 4 though, nothing but nightmare stories about this one.

i remember hopping off the demo of this when I was a young fella and finally bought it oh, 6 or 7 years ago when I got into retro collecting. Thought I was just **** at it as I couldn't get the hang of it at all :D This makes a bit more sense

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I mean there's loads to love about the game and at the time there wasn't even DDR to compare it to, it was a brand new experience. But after the likes of guitar hero, the visual cues just aren't up to snuff. Once you realize that there's a lot of fun to be had and you can even freestyle by adding notes in in time with the music to freestyle.

They at least fixed it for Um Jammer Lammy.

Sports games are just scutter these days. I bought Topspin 2K25 after Wimbledon gave me the urge to try a tennis game and since it was only €15. The gameplay is actually decent but everything is geared towards online play and the career mode is awful. Do some training and play a tournament and then you have rest for a month because your stamina is low.
