30 is much more pleasant than 25, then head to the coast for a dip, west is best in these set ups.

Depends on the person. I'll be fairly dead centre in the country this weekend and I will welcome 30° and no breeze with open arms. I'll be doing lots of physical work outside all weekend as well so I'll work up a good sweat but once I keep hydrated, all will be good. Suncream will be essential though for all, even any places where it's partly cloudy.

give me 18 /19 deg any day anything over 23/24 us to hot

we get 18 to 19C throughout most of the summer. 24C isn't even that hot, in Spain that's a night time temperature. Even in the UK they don't get all that excited for 24C. For us 24C and above is rare during the summer, some places don't even reach 24C once over an entire summer some years, last summer being a very good example.

I stand by my 25c sweet spot. I love warmer on holidays by a pool or the sea but not when driving around Dublin or going into work in trousers and a shirt.

Some high rainfall totals showing up for next 24hrs, most falling overnight. Thunderstorms best chance in the West later this evening/ overnight.

Becoming blustery /windy overnight into tomorrow.

Big spread of where the heaviest rain will fall amongst the models, Waterford looks like it might need to be included in the warnings, time enough though to wait until tonight's runs to come out to fine tune it. Met Eireann has a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow but quite a low chance I would think, Sunday on the other hand looks more active and more widespread and getting into the low 20's perhaps, tomorrow looks like getting into the high teens and maybe 20 or so in the midlands. Humid enough especially on Sunday with DP's in the mid teens.

The models this morning showing the highest totals for Cork county, some suggesting up around 50mm for parts in 24 hrs or so, some models showing Waterford into yellow warning levels too.

That is some rainfall projections in 24 hrs up along the E, NE.

When is this rain due to arrive?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

The Met Office taking it seriously. As the front pivots over the East coasts it looks to drop the most rainfall overnight into early morning, might rain in parts right up to late afternoon or a bit into the evening..

So how are we looking for Friday and into the weekend?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,754 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

not great, Sunday/Monday looks like a washout but still time for that to change by the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,606 ✭✭✭pauldry

No a lot of the washout at night. It won't be too bad most of the days just showers. Windy Monday night up to 90kph gusts in N and NW.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Still confidence low for Monday, different strengths and track, possibly a very wet for a time and blustery/ windy day, UKMO is the outlier showing a substantial storm tracking around the N of the country but too far out on its own, GFS lighter than the ECM below so time for adjustments either way yet.

Latest GFS seems to have moved towards the UKMO scenario for Monday.

UKMO way out on its own with wind speeds though and hitting in the late afternoon. GFS no more than a blustery event really and comes in through Sunday night/Monday morning. Will see what ECM is calling for in a while but in it's morning run it wasn't too dissimilar from the GFS there. Can't see this being anything noteworthy really.

UK Met Office has named Bank Holiday Monday low as Storm Floris. Looks like it will primarily affect Scotland though.

ME have issued a weather advisory for this storm and said new updates will be issued tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,606 ✭✭✭pauldry

Looked bad on UK Met Office Forecast for North. It is being caught in the jet so that could pump it up but more than likely a wet windy spell more than stormy. Think UK Met give a lot of credence to the jet. Afraid after Eowyn perhaps.

These are the forecast gusts from the main models for Arranmore off the Donegal coast, which will be more or less reflective of the strongest winds to impact the country. Unless there are some significant upgrades or a significant southward dip in track then this won't have too much impact on the wider country at all. I'm expecting yellow warnings for Mayo, Sligo and Donegal, possibly Galway and even at that it'll be mainly coastal areas that will hit the yellow criteria. It will probably seem worse because we haven't had a storm of note since January and I find the first couple of the season always seem worse even when they're not too bad and when trees are in leaf. I wouldn't be getting overly worked up about this storm at all.

    My take on Storm Floris

Storm Floris is set to bring a wet and stormy start to the August Bank Holiday Monday, with wind gusts expected to exceed 90 to 100 km/h in parts of the north and northwest.

A shortwave trough situated off St. Johns in Newfoundland is forecast to rapidly deepen over the Alantic in the next 24 hours, eventually tracking northeastward along Ireland’s northwest coast before shifting toward northern Scotland.

The strongest winds will develop on the southern flank of the system, bringing potentially damaging gusts across parts of Connacht and Ulster.

The synoptic weather stations most likely to record the highest gusts include Belmullet in Mayo, Finner and Malin Head in Donegal, Ballypatrick in Antrim, and Magilligan in Derry.

The far south and southeast will experience much less windy and wet conditions.

    Wind gust charts.jpg

Such gusts are relatively unusual but not rare for Ireland in August.

For context, on August 1st, 1986, a gust of 115 km/h was recorded at Malin Head, Donegal. More recently, Storm Ellen produced a gust of 143 km/h at Cork (Roches Point) on August 19th, 2020. Another notable August event was Hurricane Charley, which struck Ireland on August 25th, 1986, causing widespread flooding and damage, particularly along the east coast.

Rainfall totals will likely range 15-20mm in the far northwest, perhaps higher locally with any thunderstorm activity. Totals will be much lower in the far south and southeast with rainfall amounts of less than 5mm.

Rain will clear from the west coast by midday, with sunny spells and isolated showers developing through the afternoon. However, winds will remain blustery throughout the day.
