In the post match interview Slot said that he has already chosen the new vice captain for the team but the squad hasn't yet been told.

    Surely it's gotta be Mo?

I'd have been looking at Robbo, except for the uncertainty around his future, and the fact he'll be on the pitch a lot less this season. He'll also be no less of a leader without anything official anyway. Whereas Virg and Mo are talismanic, and the armband helps elevate that. Otherwise, think Mac would be next on my list.

Be amazed if it wasn't Mo. Ali would probably be my pick and, like you, I'd be happy with Robbo but Mo's definitely the obvious pick

I've only seen the goals so far. Very impressed with Nyoni's movement for his goal. From when the initial play breaks down (after his lovely backheel) he's the best on the team at watching the ball and space and does great at getting into the right place for a fairly simple goal. Lovely stuff

Obviously Ngumoha's goal was fun to watch, but that won't happen against better opposition

I'll try and tune in to LFC TV on Monday for the Athletic Club games.

What's the deal with those, will there be a first 11 playing followed by a second string or a mix and match?

My guess is one of the teams will be close to the starting 11 on Sunday week. After that, no idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,403 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

I'd assume the first game might be the second string?

It's probably the intention to give players a full 90. After that it's only the charity shield which is a glorified friendly in some ways, but also competitive.

Then it's the real thing the following Friday. Cannot wait!

Just seen the goals that pitch looked absolutely horrible I've played on better pitches on a Sunday.

Any updates on Alisson? Apparently he's in Brazil now. Can't be good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,368 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Neil Mellor on LFC after kinda mentioned it could be mixed, but with partnerships together. So maybe the first choice left sided unit together in one game, and the right sided unit together in the other, etc.

Saw this earlier. Like you say, he's gone to Brazil...

I'd hazard a guess that that means his mother has taken ill, hopefully it's nothing too bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭Mr.CoolGuy

He's had a tough run of it for such a young man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,423 ✭✭✭✭8-10

The 3 part Alisson documentary is excellent, his mother looks young

Seems like such a good family man, I hope he's OK.

It all depends on how Slot wants to handle the transition, the minimum disruption to the established team will keep things ticking over while the new players are integrated. A single change in each department is more than manageable. Bringing Kerkez, Wirtz and Ekitike into the starting line-up offers upgrades through the team while maintaining the stability.

                   Ekitike
        Gakpo Salah

             Wirtz Szoboszlai
                 Gravenberch

    Kerkez van Dijk Konate Bradley

                   Alisson

Kerkez brings additional athleticism on the left flank. Mac Allister is only back training this week, he's going to be a few weeks behind the rest of the group in his conditioning so he won't yet be pushing for a starting place in midfield. That puts off the headache of deciding how to accommodate Szoboszlai, we keep his energy levels in midfield and add Wirtz's guile in the final third. Ekitike will also bring us a new energy and work rate that we didn't have up front last season.

Frimpong can be used to add an injection of pace late in games and Mac Allister can build his fitness with 20-30 minute spells for the opening weeks of the season.

From how Slot spoke in the post match press conference yesterday the first choice team will be starting for the Charity Shield. He wasn't happy with the performance in the final against Newcastle and wants the team to put it right, he does not want the team to lose on two successive trips to Wembley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,261 ✭✭✭The Rooster

You think Ekitike has more energy and workrate than Diaz? I find that very hard to believe, but look forward to seeing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Talisman

Where did you get that from? I think you have let your own bias colour what I wrote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,261 ✭✭✭The Rooster

You said: ‘Ekitike will also bring us a new energy and work rate that we didn't have up front last season.’

Diaz was our 9 for the most part last season, so that seems to pretty clearly imply exactly what i said. But feel free to clarify your comment without resorting to stupid nonsense about bias, when my post contained no bias whatsoever! This is a place where we discuss, no need to bring pettiness to the table

You are mistaken, the numbers clearly show that Diaz was not our #9 for the most part last season.

    • Diogo Jota played 21 league games (14 starts, 7 substitute appearances) as our #9, scored 5 goals and 4 assists.
    • Darwin Nunez lined up in the position for 8 league games and made 21 substitute appearances, scored 5 goals and 3 assists.
    • Luis Diaz was our #9 for 14 league games, scoring 5 goals and 1 assist.
    • Diaz played 18 games on the left where he scored 7 goals and 6 assists.

Sounds like Quansah has started well for Bayer...

Ok, you’re splitting hairs now. Of course Jota got plenty of games and Nunez got a few but, when fit, Gakpo and Mo were near certain starters and Diaz played a little more often than Jota

But that’s besides the point. Let’s say Jota was the starting number 9 last season alongside Gakpo and Salah. So is it Jota you were referring to when you said ‘Ekitike will also bring us a new energy and work rate that we didn't have up front last season’ ?

To be honest, bar the very occasional off day, I didnt think workrate was ever an issue with our five forwards last year and hadnt heard Ekitike had an outstanding workrate. I don’t think i’ve ever heard anyone complain about Jota’a workrste. But I’m glad to hear Ekitike has more (must be exceptional) workrate (it ties in to forwards we usually sign). i look forward to seeing him

Another Ekitike Signing Day Video - worth a watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,368 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Funny to see the Adidas badge on his gear blurred out - wonder will they release an updated version of the video tomorrow with the blurring removed, when the Liverpool Adidas deal officially begins 😅

In general, somewhat interesting that our two big forward signings so far are both Adidas represented players… I kinda half wonder if there's any little bonus's from Adidas if we bring Adidas players into an Adidas kit. Certainly helps their advertising and branding anyway, so would make a certain amount of sense to incentivise that sort of thing (not that I think that would be any real motivation of a signing of course though). Isak however is with Adidas arch rivals Puma - uh oh!

The data shows that your assertion was incorrect, whether you want to acknowledge the fact or not. I originally said that Ekitike will bring a new energy and work rate and you jumped on it, in your opinion I was obviously talking about Luis Diaz. Two other players also had the role and Diaz delivered a similar output to them.

Jota suffered an injury to his rib and lung in a collision with a Chelsea defender in October 2024, he was substituted in the 30th minute of the game and was out until mid December. The lung injury required a minor surgery but he decided to put it off until the end of the season. He played in 24/25 games after his return but he did not look himself. We know now that he had a partially collapsed lung and that's why he couldn't run and looked like he was threading water when it was required of him to do so.

Slot got frustrated and lost interest in working with Nunez after the Newcastle game in December. He called him out in the post match press conference for his lack of work rate for the team. Nunez only started two league games after that, Leicester and Southampton. If Frankfurt had been receptive to selling Ekitike in January, Nunez would be an Al-Nassr player. In the closing weeks of the season, Slot had to respond to questions about speculation that Nunez wasn't starting games due to clauses in the transfer agreement with Benfica which was nonsense. Nunez is done in terms of making the first choice eleven.

Diaz filled in the #9 position for Jota, it was obvious that he was not suited to the position but Slot tried to make it work citing that playing a small more mobile player up against big defenders could give Liverpool an advantage. It didn't work out in most games. 4 of the 5 goals he scored while in the role came in the hammerings of Tottenham and West Ham. He looked like a headless chicken running around against Nottingham Forest, Jota replaced him and within seconds scored the equalising goal. Diaz can't be faulted for the energy he showed but Slot requires more than that from the centre forward player.

Ekitike brings something new that we didn't have last season, he's an unknown quantity for the defenders in the league. He has elements of what each of the #9 players last season offered, but he also offers more. He will give us the defensive work rate that Slot expected from Nunez. Unlike Diaz he doesn't repeatedly run down blind alleys, he has shown that he has the intelligence and the ability to switch the ball to a free player in another area of the pitch when he gets overloaded.

Did you know that Addidas and Puma were founded by two brothers. I won't go into detail but they had their own sports shoe company then split and created two separate sports shoe companies.

One brother, named Adolf Dassler, used the first 3 letters of his first nickname, "Adi" and first 3 letters of his surname "Das" to create "Addidas".

The other brother, named Rudolf Dassler, used the first two letter of his first name, "Ru" and the first two letters of his surname "Da" to create "Ruda". But he didn't like "Ruda" so he changed it to "Puma".

I did indeed, it’s a great story. After the split they apparently never spoke again.

Seems to be a theme with German brothers in big business - the brothers who founded Aldi had a falling out too, and split the company into Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud. Different countries get one or the other… in Ireland we have Aldi Sud.

you’re right! The thing id seen (in a quick Google) was actually just of him in Puma gear cause it’s Newcastles kit provider - very interesting so, all three big exciting moves (if it happens) would put adidas players in an adidas kit! There’s gotta be some sort of reward from that sort of synergy…
