Given the death toll of just the Dominion War there are way too few names on this list. And why so many admirals, a memorial like this is usually for deaths in the line of duty. It's just a complete lack of diligence on the part of the writers. THey want the cool image without understanding the context of this kind of thing.

It's just the usual bollix from the current producers. It's like in Picard where almost every ship had a memberry name. You had Stargazer, Titan, Uhura, Sulu and ship classes like Excelsior mk2, Reliant, Constitution mk3.

I can't understand why people still get excited and post all this "omg they said I word I recognised" stuff.

Some of those names on that wall are a bit of a stretch, such as Samantha Wildman. Or are they saying she died a dramatic death soon after Voyager? Though at least there's a few jokes ones like Adm. Tawny Newsome.

Is that supposed to be a memorial wall, or what is it?

Lt Nog, Lt Tom Paris, Lt Cdr Data, Lt Bashir, etc. etc.

…is that really as far as those characters made it in rank?

They've got "Lt Yar" up there too. Like, no harm to Yar, but how many hundreds of years of Starfleet history and hers is a name worth remembering?

If you do it right you can absolutely pay in universe tribute to past charaters, thinking about it now I'm surprised there has never been a USS Kirk, but the current crop lack enough talent to do it. There are plenty of ships in Stat Trek named after real people so there is precedent but the right way to do it is not have the characters absolutely fawn over the USS Kirk because they'd all know it existed or is at least a possibility. But we'd gt somewthing like "holy crap it's the Kirk. He was a legendary figure, and quite the ladies man, this is so cool."

I can't think of it being anything else given the context of a wall of ranks names in a militay(ish) academy. Data and Yar died at those ranks and Starfleet don't seem to do the posthumous two rank promotion but some of the others should have progressed. To be fair putting Ensign Harry Kim up there would have been funny.

The big problem is how much it's used. Drop the odd ship in with some random names but not a roll call of TOS named ships all together.

And whatever the context a big wall of names is just crass too.

SNW has a picture of NX-01 in the back of the conference room. It doesn't have people fawning over it like both Picard and Discovery have done (Starfleet museum and Starfleet HQ scenes)

Yar died at that rank, I’d just question whether her relatively short service really warrants mention on such an ostentatious memorial wall.

Was Data still Lt. Cmdr. in Nemesis? In any case though, he came back. And it’s hard to believe a lot of the others listed wouldn’t have advanced rank a bit.

In any case it all looks a bit “hey ChatGPT, list a bunch of famous Star Trek characters”. And a bit militaristic, again.

Yar is a curious case. It depends entirely on if the Enterprise C incident is eventually widely known and if the alternate timeline version is still considered the same person. Dying in ooze probably doesn't make for a memorable historical entry. Being the tactical officer in a 4v1 last stand situation, that she knew she was going into, is the kind of thing that should get ships named aftrer you. Same for Castillo being in command at the end.

I sort of think Samantha Wildman died some time during Voyager and no-one bothered to mention to it.

I haven't watched the teaser yet, but is there some memorial wall with a Lieutenant Nog on it? 100% Nog should be on it, but Lieutenant? Gtfo, that's Captain Nog to you

Was coming here to post that (Yes, I'm one of hose saddos that paused).

Big ball of "Meh". Very much the Disco vibe which is not a good thing. My spidey sense predicts MUCH emotion.

Nice to see Tig Notaro in there but assume it will be blink and you'll miss her.

I will give it a go but the first two episodes will tell us everything we need to know. By that stage my membership will probably have expired and I don't intend on renewing unless something RADICALLY changes so I will have to view alternatively.

That Stargate clip has been such a perfect fit for so much of Nu-Trek. They were years ahead of the curve 😂

    Thought? Or just hoped?

Gtfo, that's Captain Nog to you

Captain of Engineering was very befitting of him at some point.

200 is so good episode even though it's not a real episode.

Oh no its a terrible episode. I remember my first time watching ot live and been so excited for it when it first aired and then been really dissaponted with it. I suppose over the years I have warmed to it as just a fun episode for the fans and the actors.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I know opinions are personal and are neither right nor wrong as they are opinions...... But you are wrong. :) how could you not like Aeryn talking about Farscape and the look of mild disappointment in her face when yet man doesn't recognize the show?

Watched this just there, seems a mix of teen drama, starship troopers, and saved by the bell. The trailer has nothing to show, no hook at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,992 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

In its defence they have said from the outset that this would be a show aimed at the YA audience so most of what you listed is exactly what they are going for.

The beauty of a well written TV show, not one even limited to Star Trek, is that it appealed to ALL ages. Trek in the 'golden era' had young, middle, and older fans…there was no target audience, you simply enjoyed the show or you didn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,695 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

It is funny how…. I don't know what you'd call it…. "narrow" the themes of a YA-targeted book/series/movie/music is. It's pretty much "Who am I? Do they like me? Will I fit in?….. Oh and let's be the lynch-pin to save everyone".

I get it. It's hormonal. That may be a bit harsh and reductive but can we honestly say it's wrong? And this "narrowness" is specific to YA.

Look at Avatar (The REAL Avatar. The Last Airbender). A show aimed at a younger audience but aimed to not talk down to them. It's not like "Batman: The Animated Series" which could honestly be said to be aimed at adults. Avatar was aimed at kids but to give them something serious at times with a smart storyline. Interesting and multi-dimensional characters. Character progression and acceptance. And, as a result, is loved by everyone who watched it, regardless of age. Yes, it had ALL the YA tropes (Who am I? Do they like me? Will I fit in? Can I save the world?) but that's not ALL it was.

While one may (or may not) have issues wit JK Rowling's beliefs, compare the scope and characters of the Harry Potter books with the narcissistic hateful characters of "The Magicians" series by Lev Grossman.

Maybe I'm just overthinking it (Not USUALLY something I'm accused of 😀) Maybe it's simply the difference between good writing and bad….

You have no idea if this is well written or not. You are going off a trailer. Plenty of TV like Prodigy is directed towards particular age groups and ya some transcend that and some don't.

Buffy was aimed at a YA audience and absolutely only for that audience. I loved it but not a hope I would watch it now at 40.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,897 ✭✭✭Evade

I think Inviere's point was something well written can break out of its intended audience box. Avatar is a great example, it's a kids' show but most people here, who were almost certainly adults when it came out, would probably consider it good in spite of that.

I remember when Stargate Universe was in the planning stages and news at the time was it would be YA Stargate and I knew I wasn't the only one watching SG-1 at 12 because I had to videotape it when it was on Network 2 at stupid AM so friends could watch it after school.

How good was that Network 2 Monday(?) late night block for sci-fi? Stargate SG-1, The Outer Limits, the First Wave(?), Earth: Final Conflict, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,992 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

He said there was "no target audience". That's not true of great shows being for all ages it's just that they are great and as you say "break through".

If Academy is great (I doubt it) then there is nothing wrong with it having a target audience like the vast majority of shows have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,695 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Ah no, I just meant in general. We know little about this show yet. The trailer does not excite and the behind the scenes team and aesthetic are very reminiscent of Discovery so it does not bode well. BUT I will watch it. I have not given up on a Trek series yet. S31 MOVIE? Yes. But I watched Disco to the end. I have not gotten around to Prodigy yet but will soon, even though Janeway's voice irritates me no end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,992 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

We know little but we do know it's aimed at a YA audience. They have been quite clear about that so if the trailer is giving teen angst vibes then it is doing its job perfectly. People throwing it out as a criticism are wrong.

Aesthetically it will be very Discovery seeing as it's 32nd century. Also Discovery was a YA show by accident so the overly emotional tone will probably be the same but on purpose this time.

After 5 minutes of Obi Wan I came to terms with no having to watch every spinoff so I won't be watching this unless people start telling me I was vert wrong about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,211 ✭✭✭Inviere

I just meant there isn't really a need to aim this at anyone in particular, if it's a great show, it'll be great regardless. If it's ****, it'll be ****, ala Section 31. It just feels like "it's aimed at YA" is a cop out. The franchise is in a bad bad way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,992 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The idea was to create loads of shows for different people. Prodigy and Academy for certain age groups, comedy and 4th wall stuff with LD and a few general audience live action shows. It's a good idea really.

Problem was Paramount was a sht show financially and now all we are going to have is a YA show with nothing for the rest of us.

We can only hope the new owners feel the need to cash in on the IP but through design or luck do a better job than shte like Discovery and Picard (even SNW is only average). The Kurtzmann/Secret Hideout deal with Paramount is up in 2026 so that's a good start.

You won't be watching it. It was SUCH a missed opportunity. Like Marvel's Secret Invasion. SO much talent wasted
