I've a cobra self propelled mower that will drive but speed/gear change is not happening. It's drives ok if wheels are lifted but any resistance and the speed goes to crawling. The cables all seem attached so I'm guessing it's belt related. It would be beyond me to attempt fixing so I'm wondering who might repair these. The rear right wheel may also need replacing as one of the teeth seems damaged. Are the easily replaced?

    Tia

Pop the cover off the belt drive, there a few torx head screws holding it on. There you will see the belt drive/speed mechanism. The belt from the blade shaft pulley loops around the speed control jockey and idler pulley and from there to the drive shaft variable diameter pulley. Operating the speed lever should move the jockey against the belt, increasing the belt tension and squeezing open the drive shaft pulley, reducing its diameter and increasing speed. The mechanism can get packed with grass, and throw the belt off the jockey, leaving it stuck at low speed, and a slipping belt under load.

This mechanism is independent of the drive shaft gearbox internal clutch, operated by the drive grip handle lever bar and cable. This cable will have a spring at the end to the gearbox clutch lever, ( or at the handle end), and when properly adjusted, the clutch lever on the drive transmission should pull to its limit, with the spring taking up the last couple of cm of travel of the mower handle drive lever bar. While these little transmission clutches can fail, it's more than likely the drive belt slipping than the clutch.

Thanks for the reply I'll give it a go tomorrow hopefully 👍.

That definitely helped. There was plenty of build up in there and one of the springs was seized. It now will go into 4th! Still looks a little wobbly so maybe a bit more fine tuning to do. I still need to replace the back wheel I'd say as it jutters past the damaged tooth(?). Any idea who might do cobra parts in Ireland or is it standard size wheel. Thanks again

Bridericks in Kilpedder were retailers if Cobra some time back, and can still get in spares. ISE Forest and Garden in Kilkenny (mower.ie) stick Cobra, as does Newbridge Hire. MowerMagic in UK also.

I have an issue with my Alpina at4 84a ride on, it stalls when I engage the cutting blade, any idea why this might happening?

safety switch for collection bag or the seat , not fully depressed ??

Just been helping a neighbor this morning. Their issue as when they pressed the pedal to go forward (hydrostatic drive) the engine would nearly stall. Turned out to be a faulty neutral switch which has to be engaged for starting. Engine started fine but when you put your foot on the pedal it moved the switch and that stopped the engine. Ended up shorting the switch out while we get a new one.

Lack of power would be another issue. Check the float needle is clear and that there is nothing stopping the blade belt going around.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Seat switch works when engine is running ok but in say that I can't see where it is but when I get up, it cuts out.

what about the switch on the collector bag?? Is the bag sitting against it and pushing it in??

The switch for the collector bag is below the chute, so interference from the bag.

When you get up from the seat with the engine idling and the blade disengaged, does it still cut the engine? It's manual transmission, so it should idle in neutral even if you dismount. If the blade engagement cuts it out it could be a jammed deck, you'd expect a belt squeal from this. Poor fuel mix would support idling but not running under load, and Inspect the gearbox neutral switch as @The Continental Op suggested. It might be stuck on or off, though it shouldn't affect blade engagement with a running engine. With those safety interlocks you can get funny results If any of them are disconnected. Check fur a central grounding point at the engine, sometimes there are a couple of ground wires to a spade connection grounding point which might pop off.

I was looking at the wrong switch, the cut off switch is on the righthand side and there was a small metal plate that was broken off, I improvised with a piece of wood screwed on and its back working again.

Thanks for everyone's help and input.

yep that’s the one I meant as opposed to the bag full one.

Looking for a decent self propelled lawnmower…any idea how much you’d have to spend to get a decent one? Our garden is not suitable for a ride-on or a robot one so looking at the self-propelled type.

The area of what needs to be cut is about 900 metres squared.

    I’m looking at this one… Hyundai HYM480SPR 139cc Self-Propelled 480mm Petrol Lawnmower https://www.toolden.co.uk/gardening/hyundai-hym480spr-139cc-self-propelled-480mm-petrol-lawnmower/?setCurrencyId=2&#description

    Any other suggestions?

I assume you're not considering buying this from the UK, and at that price, which will surely be €100 more again you add additional Irish duty, VAT difference and delivery, plus you'll have no warranty to speak of, for what is essentially a cheap pattern 48cm mower. You can do much bigger and better for €700 and buy locally or in Ireland at least. This Stiga for starters is a 51cm robust 166cc model for €479 from the nationwide Tirlan agricultural group. What is your budget?

    Thanks for the reminder.

Would much rather buy local but really have no clue what to buy. The Hyundai above was recommended by Which? Magazine thus my interest in it.

Max budget approx €600-€700 so would love any recommendations along those lines.

    Many thanks.

Hey so I have a ProPlus PPS975707 lawnmower from 2017, the brake cable broke today when I was mowing the lawn and I might be stupid but can't seem to find a replacement cable anywhere online so any help would be appreciated.

McLoughlins distributors in Northern Cross business park Dublin 11 will supply parts over the trade counter, if you're near the M50, or you can ask in your nearest Topliine hardware store to order one in.

Issue with my Stihl RT5112. Was cutting fine but suddenly the blades now are slow to spin up and stop under any load .

    Any ideas?

I'd suspect the deck belt tensioner, causing a loose belt. The belt itself may have disintegrated, and is slipping, but under full tension this would generally squeal and burn if there was full tension. The electric clutch could be faulty, it would not generally slip, just fail to engage. A engine oil leak onto the clutch could cause slipping Check the deck drive belt first, inspect for deterioration and damage, check that the belt is under tension from the tensioner jockey wheel, it may have ridden over it if a twig or other object got in under the cover.
