Dublin's busiest bus route

Done a bit of socializing around Camden street last night and in to the wee hours. Was outside drinking most of the night, kept an eye on various buses as they drove past.

I kept a close eye on the various buses operating along the 15 route, from about 10pm until the wee hours probably, as late as 3am they were full AT ALL TIMES.

Living in Dublin 5 i decided to take a chance on one, eventually hopping off near Donaghmede for a 10 min walk home. Boarded the bus about 4ish (am) after a quick pizza, was amazed the bus was three bells… stood near the driver for nearly the whole journey. The bus leaving people behind at most stops it was so busy.

Every time I see a 15, its always busy, just got me thinking, would the 15 be the busiest now in Dublin? Its great to see. Imagine at a stage Dublin bus told us no one wanted to use a bus after 23:30… Build it and they will come… Got home for the price of a can of coke …. (leap)

Im a big fan of bus connects, i know it has had a few problems, but buses been full at 3 and 4 in the morning on a route that was never 24 hour is fantastic to see..

    Its a disgrace Joe!

IIRC Dublin Bus released a list of their busiest routes last year and 15 was on top, followed by 39a and 27

I’m on it most days going to work. I don’t even bother timing it in the morning as you’re never waiting long for one. I’ve never been on it at 4 in the morning though!

The same as been on one in the morning or evening peak…

Is it just a coincidence that all the busiest routes are under the old numbering system and no new spine routes (C1/2, G1/2, etc) feature? (I know some of the above are now replaced with new routes, but not at the time this was recorded.)

Yes and no, I believe part of it is that they wanted to ease into the programme. Jumping straight to replacing the busiest and most frequent routes would have not only been very difficult logistically, but also might have made many users upset and/or confused.

However at the same time it is definitely more complicated than that. As a part of BC some routes get split, merged, etc. For example the E1 is made up of the core sections of the 145 and 155, and especially during peak times had the frequency to match, so I am expecting the E1 to be quite high on the next news letter. However in comparison the A1 and D1 are replacing the southern and northern halves of the 15 respectively, and the other routes the A1 and D1 are replacing aren't on the list so I wouldn't expect them to place as high as the 15 does.

Additionally none of the BC routes are listed there, stops 7392 and 7591 are and they are only used by BC routes with exception of the 51D.

I'm a bit surprised the 41 isn't there given it was made into a 24 hour route a few years ago

Although that would probably have the effect of making the route less busy overall

Also I guess it has some competition from the Swords Express too

That data for the busiest bus routes is jilted. It's a poor description of what journeys are actually being made as for example on the 15 bus route it starts in Ballycullen and travels through Eden Quay, then onto Clongriffin. The data should be split up so that journeys are represented in both directions between Ballycullen and Eden, and then separately Eden and Clongriffin, but also showing the average journey distance as a mean (or more descriptive metric such as standard deviation). I picked Eden Quay in this instance as the radius point as it's listed as one of the busiest stops.

The same applies to the 27 from Jobstown to Clare Hall through Eden Quay, etc.

Otherwise it can't be reliably compared against the 46A as it's catchment is only a single radius out of the city.

    Pedantic, I know.

The 41 on its own as "load factor" measured, would definitely be up there. However, the statistics posted above include a single boarding onto that route. With a route like the 15, it is going to have many multiples of boardings throughout the route as it traverses both sides of the city.

The 41 is shared with the 41 B and C along the majority of its route, so this dilutes it even further, and the fact that it is on one side of the city only. It is an extremely busy bus all times of the day and in both directions.

My point almost exactly but in far more eloquent terms.

Both very true, and I agree that simply measuring the "busiest" route doesn't accurately represent the start and end points of many commuters

I wonder what is going to be their busiest spine …whenever they finish rolling it now.

If you're using farebox data then you're going to struggle. With the progressing simplification of the fare structure (not to mention taxsaver and rambler tickets) it's very difficult to gauge travelled distance without individual surveying. The best you could hope for would be if there were infrared boarding/alighting counters built into the buses, but if you're operating purely off the farebox then all you're going to have is the boarding locations and maybe some data on the short distance fare usage.

In any case, it's no surprise that the top 10 routes are all cross-city – yes, even the 46A counts as one as it singularily served North Circular Road as a major radius all of its own.

Good point, I forgot that the 46A serves the Phoenix Pk.
