Knocking noise in VW passat

I bought a 2021 Passat about 6 weeks ago from a dealer. After a few days I noticed a knocking/rattling noise coming from the car when I drove on any kind of bad road. It’s gotten progressively worse and now it’s the only thing I can hear when driving. I’ve left the seats down in the back, gone through it myself to try source it but I can’t.
Anyway, would I be entitled to ring them and say I want them to have a look at it as it’s under warranty. I paid €27k for it, surely if I’m not happy with it they should try fix it?
Ideally I’d like to take it to a main VW dealer 5 mins away from me, and send them the bill, instead of having to drive an hour and a half t where I bought it…but somehow I don’t think they’d go for that. So should I ring them, or will they tell me go jump? Thanks for advice.

Yes if you bought it 6 wks ago and it started a few days after buying you should have contacted them straight away. You may have progressively made the damage worse while continuing to drive over rough roads though.

Have you any idea where it is coming from? Front or rear? Left or right? Inside or outside?

I paid €27k for it, surely if I’m not happy with it they should try fix it?

Your happiness is irrelevant in terms of them honouring the warranty. What kindnof warranty is it? Engine & gearbox or something more comprehensive?

Ideally I’d like to take it to a main VW dealer 5 mins away from me, and send them the bill...

The dealer is not in any way obliged to even look at an invoice that you provide from a third party, never mind pay it. I'd recommend that you actually read your warranty documentation.

No one here knows what is covered by your warranty. Could just be a basic engine & gearbox warranty. The dealer is also not obliged to pay any main dealer VW invoices on your behalf.

If it sounds like its coming from the suspension it could be a drop link. That would be wear and tear I'd guess rather than warranty, but if it was a few days after buying you could argue it was faulty at time of sale.

One minute I think it’s coming from the back and next from the front. But I’m 90% sure it’s from the front, under the engine? Are there drop links in the front, or just the rear…and are they the same thing as “bushings”….every car I’ve ever had the bushings have needed to be replaced.
I will read through the warranty and see what’s listed on it. I just know it’s for 12 months. And I know they wouldn’t be obliged to pay an invoice from the main dealers down the road…was just saying it would be handier. I might take it to my local mechanic and let him have a quick drive and see if he can diagnose it and give me a rough price.

If you bought it from a VW dealer as a VW approved car it likely has aftersales warranty on it. I think any dealer can do that. If it's not VW approved go back to your selling garage. Either way, ring them, they're the only ones that can tell you. Use the story that you're nervous driving it in case something falls off. Lots to be said for buying cars locally.

Sounds like drop links , front and rear yes , Any local garages near you that have a ramp and willing to put it up and check it for you as a simple task.

Perfect. That’s what I’m hoping my local guy will do. Hoping he will know within minutes the cause and how much it will cost. Would be know by looking at it while up on th ramp or would he have to go at it to know. A Quick Look online shows parts are only €20-€30 if it is that, so hopefully won’t cost too much.

Funny coming across this. I have a 2021 Passat with a noise from the suspension that nobody seems to be able to find. I had to double check if I was OP at some point for this. I was convinced it was from the rear but any passenger in any other seat tells me it's the front left. I had bushings done to try fix but still same. Drop links also. Mechanics swinging out of it on a ramp can't get it but will hear it on a short drive. Metal on metal scraping noise not overly loud while going over speed bumps at any speed. Like exhaust brackets not tight (they are). I have been told by more than one place that this is something in passats of that year. I put up with it now.

I drive a 2022 VW Taigo and also have the same noise when going over a speed ramps.

I also have a separate noise, driving anywhere between 20kmh to 50 kmh, that gets louder when slightly turning the steering to the right. It sounds like a nail stuck in the tyre hitting the ground with each tyre revolution. The faster I drive the more knocks I hear.

I recently had the car serviced by a main VW dealer. They said they performed an inspection but didn't notice anything wrong. I also got 2 new front tyres last week and the noise persists. It's been there for 12 months now. Very annoying and would love to know what's causing it.

Vw are cars that parts wear on and keeps on giving , Track rod inner arms is another as wheel has to be off the ground and grab wheel at 9 and 3 and pull / push you will hear it knocking and feel movement and check outer track rod end is good.

Trying to think if that model has twin upper suspension arms like Audi.

big mileage cars can have wear in top mounting in shocks or valve in shock noisey

    Make sure wheel nut tight.

Thank you @greasepalm. There is 40k kilometers on the car now. VW quality certainly isn't what it used to be. It was serviced by the main dealer last week and they include a full inspection, including underbody, suspension etc as part of the service. I was surprised they couldn't find the issue then. I will carry out the checks you suggested. Thank you!

My apologies to the original poster for highjacking your thread.

Anything stuck in rear tyres like a stone in between the threads , rotating noise if there for 12 months should have gone if it was wheel balance stuck on small rims and tipping calliper but you goy new tyres and rebalanced.

Cable ties in the wrong place would have worn away been plastic or nylon.

Another thing i forgot is worn door hinges can flex door but normally on high mileage cars and easy to check movement lifting car up and down.

If a wheel bearing was gone on front wheel driving along a straight road and drift to the left to put weight on it , then to the right noise pitch will change to indicate noise comes and goes from right to left.

Another favourite is a stone chip trapped on the calliper scratching the brake disc common on stone driveways.

I checked the warranty…it's one of those green SIMI receips etc. Anyway it says on it in the person's writing "12 months warranty parts and labour"….so I assume that includes everything?

It doesn't mention what items are covered or excluded?
Then I'd use the approach that an ambiguous contract should favour the party that did not draw up the contract!

Thank you @greasepalm ! Your suggestion regarding the wheel bearing is what I am experiencing. I will book it into the garage and have them take a look.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time! Very much appreciated.

Ah so the faster you go the louder the drone goes and going from side to side alters the pitch.

I've something nearly identical in my 2018 Passat where the rear will often creak when recovering. It's an estate so probably heavier at the back, but it doesn't always occur and mainly happens with quite tall speed ramps. My local mechanic does most of the servicing and is fantastic, but wasn't able to source it.

All VW’s of that era creek over bumps. I’ve probably sold and driven 100’s of them at this stage
