Very much on the cards for next year. And it did operate in some games this year before being abandoned.

Three number threes getting 2,3, and 4. That's bollox regardless what shape or way the game is played nowadays.

Nah in Cork we were all going for Kerry to win. It might have taken us 100 odd years but we finally learned. Rest need catch up a little.

    God the sensitivity is bad.

The opposite of hard is soft. It’s just a word.

Sussed out Donegal were off the pace early and took advantage. Paudie was good but White did a little of damage

Donegal were playing into the canal end in the second half so what's your point? (Or two points)

Not from Kerry but facts are Kerry have given three hammerings to the best teams in Ulster. Saying they won because Donegal didn’t show up or whatever is nonsense. The new rules put an emphasis on traditional footballing skills and in terms of those abilities, Kerry have far more talent than any other county.

Here here… the sour grapes from some posters is off the scales!

The sensitivity if smoke is not being blown up the proverbial is hilarious. Several of the punters on the Sunday game mentioned how easy it was for Kerry while also praising them. Which is all I did.

    Sleep well.

Overall it was a good championship, Kerry were head & shoulders above everyone this year.

In terms of excitement though , only one game ( Galway v Meath) went to the wire , that’s a disappointing return from seven. A brilliant group stage followed by very disappointing knockouts for the neutral. It was still a lot better than anything served up this decade. But it didn’t turn out to be the best championship ever like it seemed destined to at one point.

Ye might win it next year Francie. A nice soft championship. Fingers crossed.

You called Donegal for the win and now you can’t give credit to the opposition for getting over the line without been all snidey… makes the win all the more glorious 😂

They've won close to 1 in 3 all irelands since Down came good in 1991.

They won't be long getting up to speed....

Yep. Donegal showed up and are the second best team in the country. Just weren't good enough.

I don’t blow smoke. I’ll leave that to Marty Morrisey etc.

Kerry have a couple limited enough footballers in terms of footballing skills but when they have possession they are very structured in who has the ball.

Both wing backs, Seanie O Shea, Joe Connor and the main man Paidi Clifford handle nearly all the ball when they are trying to work a scoring position. I've never seen a player run a game like PC yesterday.

More like Pirlo or Modric than any full forward I've seen before.

They have out how to use David Clifford to maximise his scoring threat; he is happy to be used as a decoy most of the time while the players mentioned above probe for opening or run down the clock like they they on plenty occasions yesterday.

Often yesterday both Kerry midfielders and centre back were almost static near the Donegal square while PC owned the ball further out. I'd love to see his possession stats.

Great occasion and great supporters on both sides. Pity is wasn't closer but Kerry had too many tricks when Donegal got it back to 4. They needed a 2 point or goal but didn't get close to either.

Were you at any of the semi finals or the final? I was at Kerry v Tyrone, the only game I have seen at any level with the new rules, I thought the new rules made it a great watch apart from the last 10 minutes when Kerry had the game won.

I think being at the game in person makes a big difference, way more enjoyable than watching on tv.

The new rules have saved the game.

Agree with this and it will be hard. Kerry have two titles this decade and with 3 to play , they'll win at least two more. The best skillful team in the country by a mile.

Tailteann cup final before that was very exciting.

The new rules are about a lot more than a few big games. Anyone thinks they were bad for the game are gonna be disappointed too because it has been overwhelmingly popular and we won't be going back.

New rules are fine. Better than what he have. But still a long way to go before football is back. Final yesterday was poor very like basketball.

A goal going up to 4 points might just end up disincentivizing the 2 pointer and leading to a glut of handpassing as teams try to walk in a goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,152 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

The 2 pointers have made the game a lot better, before the new rules, players were afraid to shoot from very scoreable positions, most points were from close in.

delighted to see goalkeepers stay where they should be as well.

3 men staying up has been the best rule change.

they are talking about more changes and Rome wasnt built in a day.

we all like to see even games but even the games like meath v donegal, there was still some lovely scores in that game, its up to the likes of meath to keep it close, that isnt the new rules fault, better a hammering with lots of nice scores than an even game with 30 players in one half, ball going sideways for 5 minutes and people falling asleep in the stands and watching on tv.

still a long way to go before football is back

Where do you want to bring it back to though?

I was at Kerry v Derry last year in the quarter final and that day I was convinced football was frigged, that was it for me, it was like soccer, slow boring build up and sometimes nothing at the end.

    Awful muck.

Then they brought in the new rules, and it has changed utterly, contested kick outs, fast ball inside because you know three team mates will be there looking for it, long range scoring that can turn a game on it's head in minutes, very little dissent and arguing with the ref, quick tap and go frees speeding up the game.

The new rules were never in place to make the game more competitive, that's up to the teams, but they certainly made it more exciting.

I was not neutral yesterday, I'm from Mayo living in Kerry, but if the game was boring from a neutrals point of view it was not because of the new rules, it's because Donegal got it totally wrong tactically.

The new rules have been a huge success. Fantastic to see long range points again, high fielding and contested kickouts, space for forwards due to 3 being up at all times, fast frees, etc.

The game is still blighted to some degree by teams playing keep ball at times however. I am not sure how you overcome that. A shot clock would only encourage more defensive tactics.

A fundamental flaw of the sport is how easy it is to keep possession compared to hurling and soccer. It's very difficult to address that once teams focused more on possession.
