Not a word of a lie. I'll keep everyone updated cos I've first hand connections to this story… it's going to be big. That's all I'm saying for now. The bus was rocking and swaying like Graham Norton's caravan on Fr. Ted, with the commotion. Those boys were in a bad place. Michael Murphy was pulling his hair out, by all accounts.

Remarkable the amount of times the camera cut to McGuinness on sideline today. Can't remember any manager getting as much coverage during a game.

Anyone have the rte stats on kick outs win lost. Scoring chances etc..

You say nobody in Kerry underestimated Donegal but at the same time a spectacular Kerry win was no surprise.. Seems a bit of a contradiction. I think most people thought it would be a close game. I picked Kerry but didn’t expect the margin to be as wide as it was.

I won’t capitalise numbers like you did but that’s Kerry’s 39th title which is amazing, Donegal have just the 2. So there’s no need to come on here and have a go at Donegal fans afterwards. None of the Donegal people I know were overly confident. Just enjoy the win. Well deserved from a fantastic side.

    Hilarious post.

You were tipping Donegal for the win earlier but now Kerry blew them off the park it’s a ‘handy win’ 😂

He kicked a lot of bad wides on the day. I dont remember Mick Fitzsimons doing anything major on him. He kicked 5 from play v Dublin the previous year and had a great game, would have done the same that year had he his shooting boots on.

It was. Donegal never mounted a serious challenge today as I thought they woukd.

    Happens. Calm down.

McGuinness is a little bit overrated I agree but winning 1 All Ireland compared to Jacks 5 isn't comparing like for like.

2012 was the most sensational All Ireland win of my lifetime given no one would even consider Donegal as contenders for either Ulster or All Ireland Titles prior to his first stint in the weeks before his first appointment.

Winning an All Ireland with Donegal is much harder than it is to win one with a Kerry or Dublin.

If you were to compare 2 years of McGuinness in whatever 6 he's had with Donegal it would be much more impressive with a similar sized county like Kildare who Jack managed for 2 seasons.

Its 1-1 in championship match ups between them anyway!

Not having a go at all at Donegal fans, though many of them did unfortunately buy into the hype. That much was obvious. But I would have a go at the media pundits who got it so wrong for both AI finals this year. Brolly said Donegal are like the sea, which rolls over everybody and stops for nobody. And that the divers would be looking for Kerry victims tonight. That's not a verbatim quote but sums up what he wrote in today's Sindo. Like seriously! 😵

’calm down’ I couldn’t be more calmer tonight enjoying a few pints after a good win today 🍺😁

Probably looking back with nostalgia at all Ireland finals and Gaa in general but has the day of “ getting stuck into them “ completely passed. Correct me if I’m wrong but did the referee today brandish a card of any colour or produced his notebook to “ tick “ a player for any foul play.
Im not in any way advocating for thuggish behaviour or violence but sometimes the need to “ lay down a marker “ or “ stand your ground “ can set the standard or turn the tide when you team is under pressure.
Donegal beaten all over the field today ( congrats to Kerry ) and yet no Donegal player got “ stuck in “ and hoped his team would follow.

Everyone is forgetting that the DC of 2023 was a shade off his best. The young man buried his mother that year. He's the goat but he's human, flesh and blood.

he kept him quiet , he kept him out of the game thats all a defender has to do , i regard brendan mccole as the best full back in the country , but had a bad first half an hour today and conceded 7 off clifford , i felt before the game that jim should have put both roarty and mccole on him but he opted for mccole on clifford and roarty on sean o shea and went zonal after that which was a bad idea because one of the players that was tracked back was caolan moore , who which meant a lot of free time for gavin white .

i think its between white and joe o'connor for man of the match both players had that much impact

Fairly straightforward AI for Kerry. Just reading Brolly's article predicting a Donegal win. Was never going to happen. Kerry had the much tougher route to the final.

Exactly and there was even talk among Kerry people if he deserved his place etc etc. David Clifford knew himself he was underperforming by his own standards. You only have to read his comments after this AI win.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I hate this sort of stuff if honest.

They were making a prediction or a opinion. Have you always got every prediction right?

If so you must be super rich and if not super stupid not to have done so.

I got the 4 QF predictions right but I didn't think to myself jesus what were people thinking backing Dublin, Galway or Armagh. I get lot wrong myself. Everyone does.

Talk in Kerry about whether he deserved his place?? That is pretty spectacular bullshit in fairness.

He was the footballer of the year that year FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,500 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Jayus. I think you’re right. Donegal were way off rallied a bit but never got momentum. Was that because of Kerry, the occasion, Donegal sideline setting team up incorrectly? It was the strangest AI football final for a long time.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I watched a few AI finals from the 80s recently and they barely showed the managers at all. Maybe once during the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Westernview

Dont worry Brolly will twist it around next week to say it worked out as he predicted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,500 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I remember it they were even commenting on TSG his form was way off. It seemed he was living off “reputation” more than anything. By his own standards:

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Kerry way too good for Donegal 1st half, or 1st half of first half. Kerry were getting their own kick outs off easily while Donegal struggled with theirs so that had them in the ascendency. Then Kerry’s patience in attack and willingness to move backwards and reset meant Donegal hadn’t a chance to play to their strengths. Even the odd time they did break Kerry had enough men back to make them recycle so their defensive set up was just too good/smart. Can’t really go man to man on Kerry though because they’ll isolate Clifford and he’ll do the rest, I imagine Donegal were expecting a tight first half and Kerry went for it. I thought when they did get possession in the first half and start of second Donegal were fine going forward but were too far behind unless they could get some dominance on the Kerry kick out to follow up a score with another and another. I’d imagine Donegal will feel they got it wrong not starting McFadden or McGee to push harder on 1st half kick outs. They also will feel that they got things wrong they needed to fix, O’Connor match up on Kerry kick outs, openness to runners with the ball from the wing. Thought they got a handle on those to an extent but there was nothing in game that Donegal started with that Kerry needed to figure out.

A lot of thinking for every team apart from Kerry now to come up with a plan that can beat them but I think the key will be dominating possession of the ball.

In terms of rules the biggest weakness in the game for me is that against good players it is too difficult to get the ball back, once a team gets set and move the ball back near to halfway but in opposition half, like Kerry were doing today, chasing the ball is asking for trouble.

You notice they cut to managers a lot more now than they ever did. Football, Hurling, Soccer etc.

More attention on Mcguinness as he is one of the most famous managers/personalities in general out there across the country.

I felt sorry for him here as he's become a victim of his own success in a way.

When the ref is giving you sympathy frees in the first half then you know you are shagged.

Anyway well done to Kerry, a very special team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Westernview

I felt they lingered the camera on him too long at times. Felt like an intrusion. Its going down the sky sports route.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,090 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Soccer style managers are new enough outside of that sport. It was often a committee of selectors and coaches in other sports. I know there are exceptions but I couldn't name a hurling manager pre Farrell or football before Heffernan and it's really only the 90's that the identity of the managers became an essential part of following GAA.

I don’t “ hate “ anything around discussions about sport in general I’ll leave that up to you. What I do dislike is that experts in sports or any other profession can one day express opinions that in hindsight are totally wrong and yet expect us to respect their opinions the next time around. Can I respectfully bring you attention to what Joe Brolly predicted about today’s game.

You've basically proven my point. He scored 9 points today - all from play!! And most people expect him not to get motm. If I remember the tyrone game he kept them in it in normal time but couldn't play extra time through injury. Kerry fans are notoriously demanding.

That con comment was made light heartedly, he's a class footballer. But if con, Shane Walsh or rian o Neill got 9 from play in an all Ireland final, do you think they wouldn't get MOTM?
