God, very cold breeze this morning I wasn't expecting it.

All this week has been overcast but warm but not this morning.

Now on my walk back when sun appeared it was roasting but unfortunately it didn't stay long.

Gorgeous day for golf. Didn't expect it to be as nice. Fair breeze now too.

    12 stations with 20C or 21C at 4pm.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Perfect for golf. I was out at 8.50 this morning and it was so fresh. Played last Thursday during the heat of the day and I ended up exhausted.

They could be , I may have to relocate them, I'll have to water them later I'm surprised how dry the soil is even since last night's water

The weather today was a bit like the Lions performance, summer, but only just.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭Thunder87

Maybe it's just perception and not backed up by stats, but it really feels like July is often the month with the most amounts of dark oppressive stratus cloud as a percentage of overall daylight, the past couple of weeks especially have been almost endless gloom

The weather's not been bad as such, mostly warm and fairly dry but very few spells of sunshine that aren't just a fleeting 5 minutes here and there

I have to say since I've come home from holidays it hasn't been cold thankfully but the lack of sun is an absolute killer.

You really notice it after been away, very little sun all week apart from one nice evening.

Lights are on an awful lot when its meant to be the middle of summer. Its actually more like end of August with dark nights approaching then end of July.

It kind of looks as if we're doing much better over here in the south west this week. I came back from Spain on Thursday to a sunny Kerry and it's been really nice since. Temps around 20C, bone dry and a fair bit of sunshine.I'm happy out and I escaped the bad weather here which followed the heatwave.

Looks like we're doing better than over east, which has me worried for the big match tomorrow in Croker. This Kerry team play better in dry conditions, but forecast looks dodgy for Dublin. Nicer forecast for Kerry. Hopefully rain will hold off until after the match, as dry weather is much nicer for everyone.

Obviously can't speak for individual cloud type but me and @Artane2002 have expressed this a good few times where July underperforms badly. We always talk about August being cloudy but July relatively speaking is worse considering potential.

In terms of Dublin Airport, this is every month of the year from worst to best in terms of our average sunshine (1991-2020) versus the theoretical maximum potential.

    December (24%), January (24%), November (29%), February (29%), July (32%), March (32%), October (32%), August (34%), September (35%), June (36%), April (39%), May (41%).

July is shockingly the 5th lowest with only the winter months and November worse. These figures tell us how cloudy Ireland really is in the grand scheme of things, not that we already know. Our sunniest month on average, May, doesn't even achieve 50% of the theoretical average. Yes, we've gone over 60% before in some very sunny months such as May 2025, May 2020, July 1955, August 1947 and August 1995 (the month with the highest % on record) but these are major exceptions.

Find the data below of which I calculated these percentages from. First table is theoretical maximum sunshine per month and year by latitude. Second is Dublin Airport climate sunshine averages since records began in 1942.

I would presume the above normal ssts aren't helping matters regarding cloud amounts.

any good spell on the horizon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭Artane2002

This July is another one that just proves our point, the second half so far has only had 17.4 hours at Dublin Airport if you take the 17th as the starting point. Words can't do justice to how abysmally low that is, it would be bad for even December, so I would imagine it's challenging for record breaking dullness. The first half was good and it took a lot of effort to undo how sunny it was, but here we are 😂, even an outside chance of the month having slightly below average sunshine overall here. Casement is even more appalling, 14.3 hours in the second half up to now and they're probably going to have a duller than average July because they did less well earlier in the month. That 14.3 hours can be achieved in one day at this time of year, so it's ridiculous.

I know it’s been grey but Jesus 💀 been busy with other stuff and hadn’t realised it’s been THAT bad.

Many of the “grey” days this summer I find have been either misty (as in the case this week, not sure why it was so eerily misty rather than grey grey if that makes sense) or smoky in the case of the first third of June though the latter still returned as “sunny spells” on recording sensors

Yeah, thanks for backing up my perception!

The fact a handful of actual sunny days mid-month is enough to push us to an above average sunshine month despite the entire rest of the month being almost exclusively grey speaks for itself. There can't be many places on earth that have such consistently grey skies in high summer.

Rinse and repeat again today with dark stratus/nimbostratus since morning

Another summer evening with lights on at 6pm.

We had a great day out at Dublin Zoo, the dinosaurs are a great addition and good that not charged extra for that.

It was sunny for about half an hour just enough time for me to plaster the kids in suncream then it went in again🫣

Thankfully the rain showers stayed away despite the big black clouds following us all day.

Solid enough summer so far in Cork, June was ~1c above the LTA, July 1.5c above. Cloudy though lately and often humid.

Today had the odd shower but it was ok besides. Galway.

Interesting to hear that the rain has arrived at last in Dublin. I could see the grey clouds watching the match on TV but really great that it stayed dry all throughout.

A nice day here in Kerry, though cloudier this evening. But we're all in great form now anyway.😀

I just had a look at the statistics and found out that, given the forecast, the second half of this July is guaranteed to be duller than the second half of January 2025, which recorded 40.4 hours of sun at Dublin Airport 😂

I used the second half of January because it is the direct opposite part of the year but the first half of January 2025 had 45.3 hours of sun. The second half of December 2024 recorded 21 hours, so that's the current target to beat 🙃

12 days or more of temperatures at or above 30 in Finland, sea surface temperatures of 23 degrees off the Finnish coast, and we can’t even scrape together 1 sunny warm proper summers day.

Endless gloom while the artic circle is on fire.

So that’s the entirety of the continent basking in warmth and sunshine, everyone out in the open air enjoying vivid uv light and high summer except the pratai people who are trapped inside their grey pig gloom prison, looking out at misty grey gloom and a sky that would make you want to get sick all down your leg.

I don’t know which is worse the weather or that nauseating bog ball muck on the television.

You're becoming increasingly unhinged Squarecircles 😅

It's not unusual for Finland to get good weather, their record max is 37c.
