Cork should stick with Pat Ryan. A bad 35 mins should not define anyone. They need to learn from this defeat and go again next year. They have made progress. They beat one of the greatest team of all time twice last year and in Munster final this year (albeit on penalties). Some people were calling for Liam Cahill to go after last year and look were he is now. Management can only be judged over a long period and with the talent at their disposal. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Cork have talent but need players who will go into the trenches. No good banging goals again Dublin when you are 10 points up.

He has more than a bad 35 mins. He was destroyed by Clare last years final. He was destroyed by Clare second half in Munster. Destroyed by Limerick in RR game and destroyed in final v Tipp. Game over for Pat i would say.

For all of cork being 6 up that’s nothing in hurling today. Tipp never go into any final expecting to get beat the want and will to win is ferocious same as Kk. For all of limericks dominance since 18 they’ve five AIs and Tipp have 3 in this decade.
Tipp won more puck outs than cork in the first half so the work rate was there only not showing on the scoreboard. They worked like dogs in the second half and got motoring. Cork had no answer what could pat Ryan do when every cork player was second to most balls and ate alive if they did win a ball. Heart and hunger wins games which tipp showed Sunday. Cork had no one to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and keep the scoreboard ticking over. And lacking the cuteness to go down injured to slow tipp momentum. Soft is what cork are.

Hardly destroyed lol. It was a tight game that could have gone either way. Luck was on Clare's side last year that's all.

You need to get out of this self depreciation misery spiral your in and get over it. We know they were horrific in the second half on Sunday but that shouldn't define the team at all.

This is more of the Cork arrogance calling for Pat Ryan's head. He won a league (first time since 1998) and Munster Final(first time since 2018). Yet this "we are Cork" attitude and we are judged by Celtic crosses crap is spouted rather that facing the reality that Cork having won an All Ireland in 20 years.

Jaysus never thought of it that way, 3 in last decade to the all conquering limericks 5 is pretty decent return. We will probably hibernate for few years again now and this one will be enjoyed in the county more then most.

Yet you had Tipp fans calling for Cahills head recently

Plus there is a manager in a All Ireland this coming weekend who has won All Irelands and they still want him gone even if they win this Sunday also.

I love the All Ireland hurling final, the occasion and atmosphere, and that's some understatement!!!. However, the buzz generated by last Sunday's final is unparalleled in my experience, not just among hurling fans but among the wider public. in our house, both my wife sat through the pre-match and the first half together. Then she had enough, both of us thinking that Cork had it in the bag, she doing some chores [thankfully or they'd never be done], and I hoping that Cork would win easily and put one of the top three back in their box for another while [narrow thinking I admit]. But what a second half, an unreal experience, as the Tipperary come-back and Cork collapse materialised! I gave a running commentary to my wife as Tipperary reeled back the deficit. Then John McGrath's goal!!. My shouts brought her back to the TV. From then to the finish it was surreal as Cork players seemed like rabbits in headlights and we both enjoyed every Tipperary score [we are fair fickle!!] We weren't alone in our excitement. In Ennis on Monday and it was fascinating the number of strangers who talked about the hurling final in cafes and shops. The epic Cork collapse was the topic of conversation and everybody seemed to enjoy watching it. And most of these have nothing against Cork hurling; just thought that they'd never see such a highly rated and talented team collapse in the manner that they did. From speaking to many people post-match it appears that many people who weren't watching the game on TV or had given up watching at half-time, were alerted by Whats App, phone messages, social media etc what was happening in Croke Park and rushed back to watch it. Strange day. The post-mortem will be interesting. Already, the rumour mill has emerged, with stories of a bust-up between Cork Players in the Burlington hotel; players ignoring supporters who called to see them at Mallow Railway station etc. Biddy Earley was blamed for Clare's failure to win all-Ireland after their victory in 1914, even though poor old Biddy died decades earlier! Mayo's alleged failure to acknowledge a passing funeral in the post-match days was blamed for their recent failures, by many people. What will Cork's failure be attributed to? I see Joe Brolly has already contributed his tuppenceworh, in blaming Donal Og and the players' strike!

Would this apply to the increase in long range scores in hurling?

a trick used by Shefflin on numerous occasions

Yes, I think it was because this was the classic underdog tale. One team given no chance and turning things around after half time. It was also a novel pairing. It's a long time since a team were 3/1 outsiders in an All Ireland. Even in Limerick's 4 in a row years I don't think the opposition were ever such long odds. Maybe Cork in 2021 when Limk were at their peak but even then if I recall Cork were shorter odds. It was abit like a movie script although there was no last minute winner. Even though the hurling was often better in All Irelands it was still enthralling for spectators although the match was over will before the final whistle.

they are feeling terrible. I know that and i can only imagine the hurt the players are feeling.
but attending a homecoming would have helped them deal with the hurt. They would have seen a good few thousand cork supporters cheering them and letting the players know that the true cork supporter backs their players through good and bad times.
they players and supporters would have left a homecoming with renewed spirit and determination to make amends.
Big mistake to hide from that.

You can shake up the backroom team and make a few changes. Bring in a few players with a bit of physicality, who might not be the flashiest but could offer something different.

Maybe Joyce to full back, ó Brien in to wing back, Coleman to midfield etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 320 ✭✭thamus doku

every county has bad days. This cork team are well capable of winning an all Ireland.
They have the skill but they need to cut the sh1t. The video of the players after beating Limerick in the muster final, we all know the one, that kind of stuff is disrespectful but also a sign of an inferiority complex.
I would say the same if it was tipp players doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,739 ✭✭✭JeffKenna

Could it not be simpler than that. Downey's and Hoggy didn't stay for the meal that night. Maybe the stories of this bust up are true and that's why they cancelled the homecoming?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,833 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Tipp were arguably the better side in the first half as well. Certainly not 6 points the lesser. Not sure what you mean by giving up playing. Maybe I'm misinterpreting you.

why not judge the match as akin to a one mile race at Olympic level and where no record /best time was set. The excitement/intrigue Is in the manoeuvring of the participants throughout the distance eg counld be running slow at the start, then quickening the pace , burning off some , maintaining the pace then it comes down to the last 100 yards or so and ‘all hell can break lose’ where the real race starts. Could the All Ireland not be viewed in the same way some say that it was a very poor match, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Could it not be viewed / analysed from the perspective of how Tipperary eked out a victory and under such long odds/ trying circumstances eg treated as underdogs by almost all pundits and ALL the media. What did Tipp do to subdue Cork, to stifle their style t, to hold them scoreless for most of the match, to hold the scoreless, etc, etc.

Yeah it's true that the Downey's and Horgan did not stay for the meal. Possibly didn't stay in the Burlo that night and went straight home. I heard a few other players didn't stay for dinner either.

So there was definitely some kind of rumpus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,348 ✭✭✭Seadin

This is simply an unbelievable turn of events if there was a burst up at HT. The best hurling analysists can't explain what went wrong for Cork in the second half. Tipp were brilliant no questions about that but are they 15 points a better team than Cork certainly not. It's was an absolute collapse to astronomical terms. The burst up in the dressing room would ruin their focus and concentratation. I blame Pat Ryan for letting that go out of control if that happened and will have to step down if there is any truth to that. Something did happen.

Well there are a few people who know nothing about football but talk like they know it all that want him gone... but there are also plenty of people who are saying nothing cos they know better

I work there. I don't think I knew of anyone that wanted him stay and I never see anyone support him online during year. It was far from a few.

If there's any truth in the messages going around about the bust up in the dressing room at half time involving Hayes, and Hoggie, I'd walk if I was Pat Ryan. He does seem like a decent fella and (if the story is true) was trying to take Downey off but the players stuck their noses in. When players start to try rule the dressing room like that it'll only end in headaches for management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Yeah but while that part of the story feels like it could, maybe, be true, the idea that Patrick horgan, the senior player and face of the team, would stand up to say a few words at half time and another player would tell him to shut up, just doesn't sound remotely true. Which basically means no part of the story can be trusted. Looking forward to all the books coming out in a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭17togo

Maybe the younger players were starting to believe the hype about them, and felt they were now the face of the team and had no issue with telling a senior player to shut up….

As with all these types of rumours the truth is somewhere in the middle. Something obviously did happen at half time to result in that performance.

A guy on the PROC Sports Forum said the half-time bust-up story is bull, one of the players told him.
