They need to look at what the BBC and UK Met Office are doing and copy it verbatim. Use that as a baseline and, in time, inject a bit of “Irishness” into it.

Unfortunately I reckon Met Eireann don't have that sort of budget and RTE just want to pass through the weather as fast as humanly possible to make way for adverts. BBC has no adverts and can give the weather as much time as it wants.

Eventually I see RTE going the way of Sky News, replacing a real weather forecast with just an onscreen map with symbols to a background soundtrack lasting 30 seconds and then more time for adverts.

I hear you. At least they’re putting the front symbols in now. RTE tried to sideline the Met Eireann presenters before but it didn’t work out. Active with media training can read a script. We do get value from the ME people though through their insight at times. The problem now is that it’s just to rushed for that.

It would be nice if Met Éireann would post up up some forecasts on YouTube like the UK Met Office do.

Please check out my varied content on YouTube.com/@jpmarn. That’s includes some weather.

They HAVE to do something about this. I can't get a read of the weather at all.

It's far too quick moving and lots of speech in there aswell.

Screens jumping from one colour to the next I can't keep up. It'll turn dark brown as if for night time and then it'll turn yellow for night time temperatures and then it'll turn this lava colour for daytime temperatures..I think..but then the next day it'll just have the green country map and temperature tags. I can't tell if it's fog, mist, clouds or rain.

The text is too small. The 3 day forecast on the end is smaller and only on for a fraction of the time it was.

I also don't get the regional forecast utility. Ireland is too small to need that.

And I also don't get the localised place names. What difference does it make if you name Kilrush or Shannon on the map?

    This is a mess!

Found tonight very bad can't get my head around the counties then showing showers can't make them out going so fast , watched BBC N ireland so much better on fronts and showers not rushed showers going slow so you can get a grip on them just can't watch ME anymore its a disaster.

Does anyone have a contact in ME that we could point towards this thread? There’s lots of good feedback here bite and we’ll with an hour of saltiness tube reading through and making notes.

Are the placenames in the provincial weather views being selected by AI ??

For example currently a place a few miles from Cork city called 'Cloghphilip' in County Cork being shown, which I had never heard of, despite having reason to be familiar with the general locality. (see attached from last night)

Cloghphilip isn't even a small village but a small townland. It is near the well known tourism location of Blarney.

The presentation map is indeed too cluttered and confusing with all those obscure name-places plastered all over the map of Ireland on top of the big obtrusive white rectangles.

Amazing someone in ME hasn't taken a step back and seen the way-too-busy displays with the presenter having to race through those totally unnecessary regional displays with no time for viewers to absorb the information.

Reminds me of the credits rolling upwards after a movie, too much data and way too fast to read. Maybe they just don't care? Would have thought they'd have reviewed the new set-up by now. A definite backward step, I feel.

I can't take to it at all. The old one was much easier to follow.

On the place names, I'm in the second biggest town in Galway by I don't think it's ever been featured. I've seen a place a few miles down the road with a few hundred inhabitants coming up twice. Not that I care but it seems very random.

A child in school would do better the graphics are absolutely terrible it's total confusion especially with the names most of which I never heard of , I have given up watching it and sticking with BBC now.

As with most things in the public service the concept of continuous improvement doesn't seem to exist, it was probably a once-and-done project outsourced to a consultancy that we're now stuck with until the next renewal comes up.

The same happened with the website where people said to give them leeway to fix things, yet years later there's still nonsense like the forecast for Dublin airport being hard coded at the top of the current observations page or the fact the interactive map always starts zoomed in on Galway regardless of where you live

They just need to get rid of the regional bit and theyl have more time. Sure you see the weather in your area from the full map. If they abandoned the regional theyd be able to show this slower.

What good is the BBC TV weather forecast for Ireland?

I agree the regional presentation needs to go. There’s no need for it. Waste of time.

Prefer their charts showing the fronts get a fair idea of the weather from them does me anyway and of course more detail always available here.

    Showing Ballykissangel will win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,497 ✭✭✭pad199207

yes , though last night saw Co. Limerick apparently island-like avoiding the rain warning in force just over its borders on most sides (see attached). Would the rain front not travel over Co.Limerick to reach affected north Tipperary? So the issue of warnings on a county-by-county basis still has to be looked at

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,835 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Indeed….. I'm in Limk City and we had 22.4 mm of rain since midnight. Very heavy rain all morning so I'd say a yellow warning was well warranted.

I wonder is it permanent or just left out because there was a little chat about science week

    Seven Worlds will Collide

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,763 ✭✭✭pauldry

I was fearing that too. Maybe some of them read this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,835 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Whatever the reason, tonight's presentation was much more relaxed with the same information forthcoming without the rapid slide-show of the four provinces and their town's names flashed in front of us. Hope they leave it alone now.

New RTÉ weather graphics really really poor in demonstrating rain/sleet/snow across the northern half of the country. New graphics are so poor.

RTÉ/BBC/ITV graphics all alongside eachother for today .. I know all 3 aren’t absolutely fantastic but RTÉ’s new graphics can’t seem to handle wintry mix at all … surely they must take another look.

I get the feeling the powers that be in ME don't really care. The last few nights, I notice the map of Ireland at the beginning of the forecast is blurred or out of focus. Those other graphics aren't very good either. Overdone with the textures and way too much information crammed into the presentation. Others do it better.

Overall I feel ITV's weather looks the best.

Agreed. Much easier to watch and overall a better presentation.
