the whole speedo thing annyos me so much. Posts on facebook saying my husband wont wear speedos! Absolute daftness. Its tight fitting swimwear not speedos. I saw aan irish family in les brunelles being pulled up over baggy shorts, i later saw the two teeteenage boys using their boxer shorts insted of buying the proper swimwear . Daftness.

Wearing boxer shorts in the pool.....Jesus. If you saw it at a pool at home you'd be having words with the managers.

Imagine not going on holidays because you won't wear a pair of cycling shorts in a pool 😄

Loved seeing (mostly Irish) people being pulled up on it Pin Parasol. They were so consistent about the rules. It became a source of amusement for us the more it happened.

Google maps also now has Waze integration and will spot speed traps etc…but I found the VW Id4 navigation in this newer generation a lot better and I was using that it in France. It was intergated with the car and was giving me battery information I needed when doing the long trips. I also found it to be great in getting me in the right lane on motorways, the Id4 Nav was way better than google for this. VW Nav is now powered by Google maps anyway, the only thing they dont have is the warnings for speed cameras

I wasn't particularly speeding around the the place I got caught doing 90kmph in an 80 but

On the speeding ticket thing, I've never used Waze or the likes in my life.

Before going for the first time last year a friend warned us about the strict speed limits.

So for the duration of the driving in France we used the limiter or the cruise control on the car and common sense to stay within the rules.

Nothing fancy, just using what was already there in the car and in our heads.

I did over 3,000km in France over the last couple of weeks and Waze was invaluable for the speed camera … I still think I might have gotten nabbed by one which was just after a toll booth … and that is an issue with CarPlay .. which seems to always disconnect briefly at tollbooths and if you are stuck for a couple of minutes at the booth it takes a few mins to reconnect.

As an aside .. we treated ourselves to the Lisadell suite for the both legs of the journey and it was a lovely way to do the crossing as a family of four.

As ever, easily solution- don’t speed! Just cos you’re in France doesn’t make the consequences any different.

On the Speedos, remember you can wear shorts all you want, speedos are only for when you get in the water.

The internet is no place for common sense like that!!!!

It's not a massive data hog, it's only pulling down the map data for the route ahead with traffic data as you go along. I stick in any hazard observations such as objects on the road or speed cameras as I travel, it becomes very worthwhile very quickly.

It's not even about speeding these days - you can be caught-out for being less than 5km/h over the speed limit due to a moments inattention. I think my only fine was 114km/h in a 110km/h while coming down a hill near Cherbourg (that's 3.3% over the limit!).

For those going to Les Ormes, there’s a speed camera not too far from the entrance located at the bottom of the hill. Very easy to exceed the limit. Speaking from experience!

Google Maps does have the reporting functions and some of the hazard notifications integrated alright, but Waze still has additional notification functionality and better crowdsourced data. It's a suck-it-and-see really as some people don't like Waze as much.

My husband has worn them in several campsites (we've been camping in France for over 16 years) and my kids wore them when they were preteens. As said in my original post, they would rather avoid them. No one stressing over it though, and if it were a strict requirement, they'd wear them.

You can use a slimmed down version of Waze (gives alerts but you can't warn people) on the tesla web browser, do a search for "Tesla Waze" and I think it's the first or second on the list

I think the best thing to do though would be to use your cars screen for maps and your phone with a holder, or your wifes phone, for Waze

Last year we drove from Landes to Narbonne and back using google maps and youtube all the way. No problems with Data.

Just on the phone data.... Someone suggested gomo World earlier in the thread. I bought an esim on a 30 day deal for 29.99 with 85gb of data. Wanted it for Google etc but also to watch the all Ireland final on Sunday with our.... Ahem... Streaming box. And now that's it's lashing rain it's been used the last few days for TV and some movies. Still 60gb left on it.

I also used gomoworld eSIM and it was fine, the only downside was that when I put on the hotspot the phone got very warm and couldn’t be charged and the battery went very quickly. It also meant that I had to leave my phone near to whoever was using it. I would definitely bring a spare phone to use as a hotspot. I got 55gb for €20 and was definitely worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭17togo

Yeah I think the 85gb I got was some kind of offer. Definitely don't need that much.

I had no issue charging my phone while using it as a hot-spot though. But the battery definitely drains really fast using it.

Does this work in France? I used Google and the option to mark speed camera is not available while driving in France.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,068 ✭✭✭BailMeOut

easy to say but getting a fine for 114 in a 110 is hardly speeding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,329 ✭✭✭10-10-20

Ah yes you reminded me - users cannot report the location of speed cameras in France so what they do instead is report Police activity instead. You then end up with a plethora of "police reported ahead" notifications instead.

agreed but is that accurate? There is an allowance of 5/10 kmph depending on the limit. I was done a couple of years back for 2 kmph over, after the allowance

    €90 fine I may add 😡

Waze through a browser is not a fully integrated experience. It lacks navigation functionality. Use the app.

Doing so in Tesla is pointless. Just set the Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to be on or slightly under speed limit. The car will do the rest. You can also set a speed limit in Controls > Safety > Speed Limit Mode.

Waze and Google Maps are both owned by Google but differ slightly. Good article here on the difference.

Can anyone confirm if Domaine des Ormes enforces swim shorts in their pools?

Dont mind if they do - we just dont have any!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭browne_rob5

    They don't

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭browne_rob5

    They do not

I find the TACC on autosteer not to be the most reliable. It often misreads road signs and on motorways and dual carriageways it allows you to speed

While on the subject(s), I was pulled over at a pool last year in France for wearing way too sexy shorts. The lifeguard gave me a speedo ticket ....ba dum tish!

Hi all, over 10 years into doing the campsite thing however looking for a recommendation please! We’ve done La Croix du Vieux Pont 3 times, La Baume 3 times, Les Ormes twice, Castell Montgri (Spain) twice, La Vallee and Les Mouettes. For next year looking for somewhere guaranteed heat in July, great water slides, good on site entertainment and lively in the evening, walking distance to the beach, local town, restaurants etc. The last part is a must!, don’t want to be in a campsite where you have to drive 20 mins to a beach or restaurant!! All ideas will be gratefully considered!!! Thank you

I had a similar quest a couple of years ago. Seems only the smaller sites are within the towns/villages. We decided on Le Jard in La Tranche Sur Mer. It's at the edge of the town and about 15 min walk to the nearest restaurant. They also do a free shuttle bus to the town. Campsite (Yelloh) was top class to be fair, had a few pools, rapids, slides and entertainment was excellent. Beach is across the road, about 10 min walk. It's about an hour from La Rochelle (lovely city), water parks, tourist attractions in the wider area. I'm looking at the Dordogne next year and hoping to find a similar site.

Sylvamar!! Currently here and while the local restaurants aren't amazing, they're not bad and the on-site entertainment both during the day and in the evening in class. They have an amphitheatre that holds nearby 500 people and it's jammed every evening for the shows.

Definitely the best French site I've been to and I'll be sticking up a full review after we leave
