I always had great respect for Mike Tomlin and I'd call him the third best coach over the last 20 or so years behind Belichick and Reid.

However I think he's made some very questionable decisions and mistakes over the last couple of years and this is a big one in my opinion.

Looking at the contract that Rodgers signed I think it’s a reasonable punt for Tomlin and the Steelers to take. If he becomes more trouble than he is worth they can cut him.
I was expecting much more guaranteed money. It’s a bit of a hit and hope but pretty low risk for the team IMO

He could ruin a lot if things pretty quickly. There was a lot of talk about him being a big part of the Saleh firing and obviously he was the reason they traded for Adams.

I think it's an awful move. Not only is there the possibility of locker room trouble but he's done. He was done before he left Green Bay and then he got injured and he was worse when he came back.

He's been on with Pat McAfee throwing out subtle hints about things without actually revealing anything in the second half of last season.

He's a big problem and they'll get nothing for it.

Different circumstances. The Steelers investment here isn’t comparable to the way the Jets bet the house on him. It’s also a much more stable team, and if there is any issue he is dispensable.

Nobody is expecting MVP level play but he is certainly better than Rudolph or Russ Wilson at this stage. We will have to see how it works out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,888 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Wilson and Rudolph are better than him. That's how bad he is now.

From a glancing read of it, might be something that could be downgraded to reckless endangerment or whatever, but still potentially big jail-time.

I would take a punt on Rodgers. Anything with the Jets has a bit of an asterisk for me, as it's such a train-wreck of a franchise. The culture in Pittsburgh is much better.

Rodgers ceiling is higher than Russell Wilson or Fields. The best you're getting with them is ok play. With Rodgers, you have a chance of something good.

I don't know you can really be against it, it's a one-year deal, and you were going nowhere with Wilson/Fields.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,246 ✭✭✭The_Honeybadger

Yeah that’s what I was getting at above. Wilson is a one trick pony at this stage, and he doesn’t have the mobility to improvise and avoid sacks any more. Fields is great with his legs but just so limited as a passer. The ceiling with either of those two is very low.

I’m hoping for a more efficient and varied offence with Rodgers. If it is to have any chance of success that young Oline will need to come together during 2025. They have invested a lot in it with varying degrees of success so far.

Russell was at a similar if not better level than Rodgers last season. Wilson only played 11 games to Rodgers 17 but if you do the stats to give them an equal number of games I'd say they would be pretty similar in the main areas outside of ints, Rodgers definitely had more of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,246 ✭✭✭The_Honeybadger

I’ll admit I didn’t watch a huge amount of Rodgers last season but by all accounts he improved as the season progressed after a very rough start.

I watched every snap Russ played. He started ok against a few bad teams but against any quality opponent he was a disaster, holding the ball too long, taking sacks, takes off running like he is in quicksand, no intermediate passing game, everything is a dump off or a low percentage bomb down the field. He is washed imo, and the Steelers made it clear pretty soon after the season that he wasn’t coming back. There was probably a better case to bring Fields back.

Maybe Rodgers is washed too, we will know later this year. But again, they haven’t risked much on the move

It’s ok for people to disagree on the wisdom of the signing, don’t want to be blocking up the thread with it.

Rodgers very obviously wasn't 100% recovered yet at the start of last season, he improved significantly as it went on. That upwards progression (and/or the idea that the Jets are just a dumpster fire of an org that brings anyone's level down) is probably what got the Steelers to take a punt on him.

I watch a fair few Jets games every year. It's a bit of enjoyment for a Patriots fan and particularly over the past few years as we were as bad as them.

He was terrible last year and that includes two games late in the season against the Rams and Bills.

I mentioned a few QBs like Cooper Rush who would've been much more sensible gambles.

I see Tyreek ran 100M in 10:15 last Friday at an official meeting. Not going to threaten an Olympic medal or anything but mightily impressive for someone who doesn't do specific training/nutrition/weights aimed at 100M sprinting.

Just to give an idea of how good 10:15 is, it would have been World Record until the mid 1960s, and if he declared for Ireland today he'd immediately be installed as our National Record holder.

Has he been a great coach though? Lets examine that.

He inherited a strong roster from Cowher (a fav of mine, very underrated) and won a SB. What has he - tomlin - done since?
Is a mathematical 9-7 in a 16 game season over decades even good? It's likely not, as it's never good enough to win it all as you're never among the top few teams, and it's never bad enough to get you a good draft pick.

He's basically made the steelers into a temu version of the pats dynasty under BB, but without the success. I don't rate Tomlin as a great coach. He's a serviceable coach who won't lose you games but won't build you a 'win it all' team. That team with the 3 Bs should have won more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,888 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He is a Superbowl winner. Tell me how many coaches took over a team that won a Superbowl and continued the success?

When only Tom Landry and Bill Belichick are ahead of you for most consecutive non-losing seasons you are definitely talking about the greats of the game, another three and he'll be tied top.

His issue has been at QB. He's never had a great one. If he gets one he'll win more Superbowls. Outside of QB he has made a lot of great draft picks.

Hes also 31, which makes it all the more impressive. Usain Bolt's sprint time peaked at 26, and went down hill every year after, and almost all sprint athletes have very similar age declines.

To be fair 10.15 wouldn't get you close to the Olympics, the qualifying standard is 10.0, for an American sprinter to make the team they'd need to be running 9.8x.

Even to make the NCAA final you'd need to be running faster than that. High school athletes would be putting up faster times than that also.

It's impressive for an American football player but it more goes to show the gulf in speed between "Football Fast" and "Sprinter Fast"

FYI - The Irish record is 10.12 so he wouldn't be installed as the Irish record holder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Ah, then wikipedia is out of date (I really shouldn't use it as a source). It had Israel Olatunde as the best Irish 100M at 10.17.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,464 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Landry was before I watched football so I only have the lore and documentaries to go on, but there's no merit to any contention that Tomlin is at the same ballpark than BB, let alone the same level. Multiple mid seasons and 1 SB in what 20 years doesn't make you great.

Just like Trent Dilfer isn't a great QB because he won 1 SB.

I think he ran 10.12 last year, 10.17 was from 2022.

I never said he's at the same level as Belichick or Reid but when your name is being discussed as regards records in the same breath as them and other greats then you are a great.

Pretty unusual trades going down between the Steelers and the Dolphins which is NBA like.

Reported first that the Steelers had traded for Jalen Ramsey. Now Minkah Fitzpatrick has been traded back the other way for a reunion with the team that drafted him and TE Jonnu Smith has been traded to the Steelers from the Dolphins.

Looks like it has all been done for some late round picks in the 2027 draft.

Very odd to see the Dolphins trade Jonnu Smith who was a revelation for them last year.

The Dolphins definitely needed help at safety but the Steelers don't look in great shape at safety without Fitzpatrick.

Neither of those two trades make sense to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,246 ✭✭✭The_Honeybadger

Strange trade on both sides. Surprised the Steelers were willing to part with Fitzpatrick. They have plugged one hole on defence and created another. Possibly another move to be made at safety

No, well I don’t think so. He gave a rambling opening press conference and said the following about paying Micah Parsons.

Have you ever heard of any clubs committing to players, and then they didn't pan out after they committed to them? We have," he said.

"Just because we sign him [Parsons], doesn't mean we're going to have him. He was hurt six games last year."

Packers sign Mark McNamee, former Kilmacud Crokes goalkeeper.

He came through the IPP, was initially signed by the BC Lions of the CFL but was released this week.

Even though GB have gone through a few kickers since Crosby left it's hard to imagine that this guy is little more than a camp leg that the they are bringing in using that free IPP roster spot.

Probably already know, but if you're subscribed to NFL Gamepass through DAZN, if you click to cancel your subscription you're instantly offered a 10% discount on your renewal. Just worked for me anyway, dropped it from about 190 to 162 (that's more than 10% but the offer said 10%… maybe a deeper discount when it's paid in one payment rather than monthly or something).

Also seeing reports online last night that ESPN are nearing a deal to buy NFL Network and Redzone. Not sure what that'll mean going forward but Americans online are saying that it'll probably result in far more ads on Redzone, not just the sneaky ones they tried adding towards the end of last season, as well as a lot more Stephen A. Smith and Pat McAfee on the NFL Network.
